Obv their stories are very similar. The World Is Ending Lets Send The Guy Who Won't Be Missed To Save It yadda yadda. But I think a very very interesting part of it all that ppl kinda tend to gloss over/passively joke abt is that Ryland thinks very differently than Simon does. He's an athiest science teacher (like literally the very thing cults fucking hate) who has never known starvation, never known prison, never really known sickness or death or killing or like even how it feels too be super close with someone (before rocky, anyway) because that always led to disaster.

and then there's simon who hasn't known comfort since he was a kid. who did have a person once that was ripped away from him and never stopped being attached to her, even though she's gone. who's killed and almost been killed hundreds of times. simon who was always told what to believe in and was never really given a chance to be who he wanted to be. simon who just wants someone, anyone, to take pity on him only if its for a moment, but doesn't know what to do with that help when it's given to him

simon gives ryland somewhere safe to be vulnerable/understood, and ryland gives simon the safety to find himself in everything he's been through
