I LOVE it when artists depict a very clear dynamic between lovers, so much so that I could literally ship that couple without even knowing them. I hope Iโve managed to draw enough of the kind of dynamic I envision for Elucien. Itโs not the full scope of what I imagine them to be like, but certainly a chunk of it!
And alsoโฆ I heard that the people who voice Elain and Lucien both ship Elucien. If thatโs true, Iโm gonna scream. You know how the voice actor of Zuko made a fan audio in which Zuko confesses his love for Katara? I need something like this for Elucien ๐ญ

one of my elucien headcanons is that because elain cause hear lucienโs heart, she uses it as a sort of lie detector
elain: do you like tea?
lucien: i do, lady
elain: do you like it with milk?
lucien: yes i do
lucienโs heart: ba dum badum baDUM
elain: liar
lucien: *sweating nervously* ha ha ha you got me, you always can see right through me! how do you do that!
lucien internally: oh shit sheโs a seer, did she see that time i put milk in my tea and spit it out? wait which way do her visions go, past or future or both?? should i start liking it with milk?? is it more human or fae to drink it with milk?? what kIND oF MILK???
lucienโs heart: BADUMBADUMBADUMBADUM
elain: iโm just good at reading people
i think itโs because theyโre so nervous around each other, and this sort of levels the playing field for them to really be honest and open with each other
(also lucien would never lie about the important things but he would lie about something like being allergic to lemons because he wants to eat the lemon cookies she made for him because heโs THAT much of a simp)
side note: itโs also a really bad idea for him specifically to try and lie to her because she can hear his heart AND see his future - makes planning little surprises for her down the line a bit complicated, but lucien is nothing if not determined
I have been DYING to commission this scene from ACOWAR!
Lucia did an INCREDIBLE job drawing this scene! Literally rereading that chapter, Lucia got everything. Elain laying flowers on their fatherโs body, the sisters watching as heโs cremated, Lucien panting and out of breath from running to check on Elain, Nesta whirling back thinking someone was about to attack them, King Hybernโs decapitated head.
AND Elainโs adorable little smile when Lucienโs tells her that heโs okay has me screaming on my knees!!

I still think about that whole paragraph in SF where Cassian describes how Nesta and Feyre look as if they own and command the night with their clothes in Nightcourt black, but Elain, no matter how much she claimed to be a part of that court, it sucked the life from her. Black drained her of color, the girl who craves sunlight, who is constantly turning towards the sun and chasing away shadows.
Who would have thought the mother gave her a mate filled with sunshine, filled with warmth. Elain has been in the shadow of others for so long, but with Lucien she has the perfect chance to step into her light.
The placing of this lighting is purposeful. Lucien, who has a light within him, has been cast in darkness through all the things he's been through and carried. His own light behind him, but still reaching out to Elain.
Elain is cast in shadow from where she currently is in the story, but part of her is illuminated in light from Lucien. She can see the light in him that he may not be able to see. If only she can take his hand, and permanently step out of the shadows, of the dark, into the light that she has always been turning towards.

Not every scar is visible, many are carried quietly and hidden behind smiles. Elain and Lucien have both been through so much in their lives, but they still choose not to give up.
I think one of the most beautiful things that will come from their mating bond is the chance to heal with someone who understands the weight of quiet pain without needing it explained.
Love canโt erase the past, but it can make healing a little easier. I really believe theyโll find the peace theyโve both been searching for in each other ๐

Lucien and Elain fit the arranged marriage trope so perfectly! Even though they're so conflicted with how they're feeling, they cannot deny the constant pull they have for one another. I love the idea that Elain and Lucien would have a ceremony that mixes fae and human traditions, or have a human wedding and Fae mating bond ceremony!
I also imagine Elain and Lucien acting like they've accepted their bond to try and put up a unified front, only for that tension between them to build when they are 'putting on a show', blurring the lines of what's real and what is an act.
Of course we know, it's all real, they're just too stubborn to admit it!

โElain, itโs been nearly three years,โ he said finally. โDonโt you think itโs time you made a decision?โ
โA decision about what?โ
He sighed defeatedly. โAbout whether youโre going to reject the mating bond.โ
She gave a laugh that sounded like tinkling bells, but he recognized it for what it was. A show. A courtierโs laugh.
โI really donโt see whatโs so funny about โโ
โYouโre all obsessed with โmating bondsโ,โ Elain interrupted. โWith whether Iโll accept or reject, whether Iโm free to live my life or be forever tethered to a stranger. I canโt exist without judgement if I choose to flirt, or charm, or take a lover who doesnโt claim to be my mate.โ
Take a lover? Claim? He felt a growl rumble deep in his chest at the suggestion, and hoped to the Mother she hadnโt heard it. Heโd had aโฆ sense, at Solstice, that there had been something โ a flicker of desire for someone other than him. Heโd tortured himself about it,ย never once imagining she might be acting out, some form of rebellion against her perceived entrapment.
โBut Iโm not about to play along with all this faerie nonsense, like my sisters do,โ she continued, tilting her chin in the air. โI donโt have to reject something that isnโt real!โ
He blinked, wondering for a moment if heโd misheard her.
โNotโฆ real?โ
โNot real,โ she repeated, turning from him. โFrom my observations, Iโve deduced that mating bonds are a myth, perpetuated by the High Fae to lure poor unsuspecting womโ females into relationships with,โ she flicked her eyes over him, โunscrupulous strangers.โ
Strangers? Unscrupulous? A myth? An incredulous laugh spilled from him, but she remained stone-faced. She wasnโt joking.
Lucien shook his head in disbelief. Of course. Of course. Trust the Cauldron to give him a mate who wasnโt just reluctant to make a decision about the bond, but was in complete denial about its existence! Did she not face the same daily tortures as him? The same dull ache of longing when they werenโt near each other? The same ravenous urges when they were in close proximity like this?
