Maybe there's some truth to the Oscar to Redbull rumours because much like actual bulls, Oscar Piastri seems to have a problem with specifically Red cars. Because a solid 85% of all his best overtakes have been on Ferrari's.

Can we #talk about how when Lewis locked up and cut the chicane Lando immediately came over the radio to demand "he needs to give the position." An obviously bullshit request, as it's undeniable that Lando was nowhere NEAR close enough to Lewis at that point to be in any way entitled to the position. He was so far behind that in the off-board shot of Lewis locking up Lando was not even in the frame. And yet his engineer was immediately over the radio reassuring him that they were "on it," and not long after we did get that little 'under investigation' graphic drop down confirming that Mclaren did, in fact, take it to the stewards.
But when Kimi turned in on Oscar in Brazil last year, resulting in Oscar getting a penalty that was so unfair that it was universally decried by commentators and drivers alike, that was so undeniably wrong that it was brought up as a specific example in a GDPA meeting about how bad the current racing rules and penalty system was, not only did Mclaren not lift a finger to fight it during the race, but afterwards they thanked the stewards, said they "had to trust them," and "we had nothing to complain about" when without the penalty they would have had a 1-2 finish.

Seeing some people get a bit stressed out about how Oscar will adapt to the new regulations next year, so let's look at some historical context of how he's been able to adapt to significant changes in machinery throughout his career so far (and also do a little bit of glazing of his junior career because I cannot help myself and people do not talk enough about just how fucking nuts this kid was):
He came into British F4 with his only prior experience in single seaters being 11 races in Formula 4 UAE. In his first ever weekend he finished 3rd, 6th and 2nd in a field of 18 drivers. Across the 30 race season he scored points in every single race he finished (28), and finished on the podium in half of all races (15) to end up 2nd in the Championship in a field of 24 drivers
He participated in the 2017 Formula Renault 2.0 Rookie Test. In a field of 36 drivers - including 21 with experience in this category - he went 5th fastest in both sessions
In his first weekend in Formula Renault he finished 6th and 5th in a field of 28 drivers. Compared to his other seasons in the Junior Categories he had a pretty lackluster season, finishing out of the points 7 times in 20 races and only getting 3 podiums, but he was still able to finish 8th out of 31 drivers in the Championship, and score significantly more points than all 3 of his teammates combined (110 vs 57, 11 and 1). This was also the last time he participated in a series without winning the Championship until his rookie Formula 1 season half a decade later.
He participated in the 2018 Formula 3 Post-Season test, where he drove for two different teams. In a field of 20 drivers he finished the six sessions in 10th, 11th, 13th, 4th, 6th and 4th.
In his second season in Formula Renault new chassis, engines and tyres were used. He finished an unlucky 18th in the first race after contact while running 5th forced him to pit for a new front wing, but bounced back to finish the next race 4th in incredibly wet conditions. He finished the job of making up for his poor start the following weekend by winning both races from pole, with a fastest lap to boot. The first round was the only time he finished a race without scoring points, with his worst finish otherwise being 6th. He stood on the podium in 11 out of the 22 races, making this the second time he achieved an at least 50% podium rate over a season, and won the Championship from a field of 26 drivers.
He won his first ever Formula 3 race from 3rd on the grid. He went on to score points in every race he finished bar a single 11th, meaning he won the Championship as a Rookie from a field of 35 drivers.
He won his second ever Formula 2 race after pitting late and overtaking 7 cars in 7 laps. He proceeded to put in one of the most dominant Formula 2 seasons of all time, scoring points in every race he finished, getting at least one podium every weekend (11 out of 23 races to just narrowly miss out on a 50% podium rate for what would have been the third time in his career), and ended the season with five consecutive poles and four consecutive Feature Race victories to win the Championship from a field of 29 drivers by a whopping 60.5 points which is the fourth largest margin in the categories history.
In his second ever Formula 1 weekend he made it to Q3 and Qualified 8th, over 1.2 seconds ahead of his teammate in a car that the weekend prior had been physically incapable of completing more than a dozen laps without falling to pieces. He was unfortunately unable to benefit from his amazing qualifying in the race after a collision in the first few corners led to him pitting at the end of lap 1 and coming out last by almost 40 seconds
He received significant upgrades to give him a competitive car for the first time in his F1 career, and he immediately qualified 3rd, 0.071 seconds behind his teammate despite the fact he did not have all the upgrades yet. It is highly likely he would have finished the race in 3rd as well if not for Mclaren fumbling his strategy and dropping him to finish 4th.
tldr; Throughout Oscar's entire racing career (minus karting) he has proven at every asking that if he is given machinery capable of being competitive, he is going to be competitive immediately.
HE FINISHED 2ND IN HIS FIRST EVER RACE IN A NEW REGULATION SET AFTER BEING THE FIRST DRIVER TO SUFFER BACK-TO-BACK DNS'S IN DECADES. HE WENT FROM THIRD TO FIRST OFF THE STARTING LINE, EASILY DEFENDED FROM A CAR ~1 SECOND A LAP FASTER FOR THE ENTIRE FIRST STINT, AND PROBABLY WOULD HAVE WON THE FUCKING RACE IF NOT FOR AN UNLUCKY SAFETY CAR. ALL WHILE DRIVING THE 3RD BEST CAR.

the little OTK kart suit, the slightly overwhelmed smile, the baby cheeks—he looks like he was constructed in a lab to be the least threatening person at the Gold Coast 600 in 2015
it’s the first non racing weekend of the season, or as oscar piastri would say, it’s the third non racing weekend of the season

Okay but have we considered: The first Australian to podium in Albert Park doing it in the number 1 car?

it’s clearly not going to be this year. it might not be next year. it might not even be the year after that. but mark my words, one day oscar piastri is going to stand on the top step of the podium at the australian grand prix and when that day comes you are all gonna get so sick of me because i will never ever shut up about it
OSCAR PIASTRI: HOMECOMING
Adapted from: Litany in Which Certain Things Are Crossed Out by Richard Siken
Before you panic, just remember that a P5 start means Oscar only needs to gain TWO positions to get a podium. Remember that everyone who knows anything about F1 is predicting this race will see a lot of retirements due to mechanical issues with the cars, which means there will probably be multiple safety cars. Remember how incredible Oscar is at wheel to wheel racing and how much his racecraft has improved between seasons gone by. Remember two of the people in front of him are 2nd year drivers.
A home race win was always going to be unlikely with how dominant Mercedes looked to be. But a home race podium is still very much on the table.

In light of the news that dts is going to cover Qatar and show the Mclaren pitwall, here's a friendly reminder that Formula 1 teams have access to the live radios of EVERY OTHER TEAM.
Don't let them spin the narrative that Mclaren just "didn't know" the other teams would pit. The Gasly-Hulkenburg crash happened when Oscar and Lando were not even halfway through a lap, and then they were forced to slow down by the yellow flags and then the safety car.
This was not a case of poor timing where Mclaren got unlucky with track position and were forced to make a snap decision because their drivers were about to go past the pitlane. There was time for the broadcast to pull up and fully watch a replay of the crash using footage from multiple different cameras, show the damage to Gasly's car, and discuss what happened and who was at fault before cutting back to the live feed to watch Mclaren not pit their cars.
They had plenty of time. But during that time not only did no one at Mclaren bother to check what any of the other teams were telling their drivers, but they didn't even bother to turn their heads. Because if any of them had bothered to rotate their necks just a little bit they would have seen 9 pit crews scrambling to get ready to receive cars.
Don't let them say they "didn't know." They might not have known that literally every single other car on track was going to pit under the safety car, but it is categorically impossible for them to have not known the vast majority of cars, particularly the other front runners, were all going to pit. They knew. And they consciously decided they weren't going to do the same.
Marginally less chaotic than previous Beginner's Guides, but potentially more bitchy. Oh well. Enjoy.
