this might be an unpopular opinion as it is mxtx least popular work but im reading svsss rn and feeling absolutely heartbroken by chapter 49 and haven’t recovered so i have to say,, it’s becoming a favorite novel of mine too. I usually hate miscommunication and both lbh and sqq are frustrating individuals dealing with it in the worst way ever but the fact that lbh still dreams of sqq after 5 years is hurting me and I adore the mixed messages between the two of them along with what shen jiu left behind. the whole novel has been horrifying and beautiful at the same time. I keep forgetting they’re at the will and whim of the system and luo binghe is such a rich character but I wish he’d stop making assumptions. his assumptions make me sit down and take a breathe bc im mentally yelling. this is SO different from hualian in tgcf where miscommunication was the least of their issues, because all they’ve been is as honest and close as possible so this was an interesting turn. mxtx is such an amazing writer. I’ve read so much BL in the past decade but ive never come across something this heart wrenching and twisted, it just leaves me shocked reading more and more. I just need to say this out loud. I feel like I’m reading a romantic horror novel at a lot of points. drinking the blood of heavenly demons for the blood gu? water prison? the plague from the city? bingqiu’s horrible reunion? wow love it. oh and I also love liu qingge so much. liushen hurts me too. I have so many feelings over this novel. it’s so messy but i love it.
Sumuzhe (song) English translations
苏幕遮 is a loanword and it ‘originally refers to the “浑脱” dance music from Turpan (Ancient Gaochang) in Xinjiang today. “浑脱” means “bags”. It is said that dancers use oil bags to fill the water and splash each other, so the Tang people also call it “cold-water-splashing play of the barbarian” (泼寒胡戏). In order not to cast cold water on the head, the performer wears an oiled hat. The word of the oiled hat in the Gaochang language is transliterated as “苏幕遮”, so the song and the lyrics in the song are called “苏幕遮”. Someone translated it as “Screened By Southern Curtain”, who did not consider its origin and took the words too literally, especially the rootless word “Southern”. According to this, I think the literal translation “Oiled Hat” would be vulgar and prefer “Water-bag Dance”, which not only shows that it is dance music, but also allows the reader to appreciate the content and image of the dance.’

苏幕遮 is also the name of a poem written by Fan Zhongyan and here’s a translation by Julian Farmer with Liang Yujing.
A green, cloudy sky; and yellow leaves covering the ground –
there are even autumn colours in the waves.
Over the waves, there hangs an emerald green mist.
Mountains catch the setting sun; sky and water fuse.
The fragrant grasses are heartless,
but move further, now, beyond the setting sun.
There’s homesickness and wanderlust.
When each night comes,
only happy dreams afford me sleep.
With the bright moon, on the balcony, I’m not to be alone!
The wine poured in my worry-guts
transforms itself to lovesick tears.
Here’s the song lyrics and my translations:
薄汗轻衣点缀这泼墨画山水
Light sweat from the loose clothing speckled onto the blot-ink painting
Lazy, slender hands beckoning the sale of a popular book
These two lines are from a poem by the poetess Li Qingzhao: (蹴罢秋千,起来慵整纤纤手。露浓花瘦,薄汗轻衣透。
见客入来,袜刬金钗溜。和羞走,倚门回首,还把青梅嗅。——宋·李清照《点绛唇》)
可怜落花叩玉枕 拂袖人还昏睡
The pitiful flower petals float down and knocks agains the jade pillow, the person wearing billowing sleeves is still asleep.
The cool breeze brings about a slight chill and irritation; one side of the woman’s face is dolled up beautifully, while the other side is wrinkled with worry
As she looks into the mirror doing her makeup, she spies upon the noisy conversations going on behind her
People full of feeling have always been full of distress.
(From the poem 怨王孙 by the poetess Li Qingzhao 里春晚。
——宋·李清照《怨王孙》 The imperial city, late in spring. Double doors, a secluded courtyard. Grasses are green before the steps, at dusk the wild geese no longer fly. Who sends a distant letter to the person in the room aloft? Regrets stretch on and on.
People full of feeling have always been full of distress. It’s impossible to cast aside. And now, the Cold Food Festival again.)
My distant dream did not carry me home, as I feel somewhat withered.
(This line is also from another Li Qingzhao poem: 夜来沈醉卸妆迟。梅萼插残枝。酒醒熏破春睡,梦远不成归。
人悄悄,月依依。翠帘垂。更挼残蕊,更捻余香,更得些时。——宋·李清照《诉衷情
Drunk last night, I delayed taking off my make-up. A withered sprig of plum blossoms still sits in my hair. Sobering up now, their scent interrupts my spring sleep, my distant dream did not carry me home. No sounds of people now, the moon hangs longingly in the sky. The green blinds are lowered. Again, I toy with the fading flowers, pinching out, again, what fragrance remains, to make it last, again, a little longer. )
Chorus:
The embroidered harp for no reason produces a sound of regret, achieving streaks of tears.
(From the poem Embroidered harp by Li Shangyin:锦瑟无端五十弦,一弦一柱思华年。The embroidered harp for no reason has 50 strings, each string each wooden peg carries a memory of a golden year)
This straight path reveals a gentleman’s heart is devoid of beauty, just as in the northern river continues to flow day and night.
Far is my longing, deep is my grievance, when will there be an end to my abjection, half of the river is filled with faith, the other half, worry.
(From 2 poems. One poem being Everlasting Longing by Bai Wuyi:
The still flow of Bian River runs, The still flow of Si River runs, At the ancient ferry of Gua Zhou The confluence whirls, eastward. Beyond, Jiangnan peaks emerge as sorrows. Far is my longing, Deep is my grievance, No end to my abjection Till we are reunited. Now, In the moonlight a solitary one stands.
Song of the River by Evening by Bai Wuyi
A sunbeam paves the water, the last of a sun sunk low;
Half of the river rippling, half in red aglow.
How so lovely this third night, ninth month lunar calendar,
Dewdrops seem like pearl drops, the moon, like a bow
Wine and gambling chips intertwined, we absent-mindedly we raised a toast to each other, as we encourage our juniors to stay and join us.
(From the writer Ouyang Xiu: 觥筹交错,起坐而喧哗者,众宾欢也。——宋·欧阳修《醉翁亭记》
棋逢红颜一醉 千军万马退
Drunk with red faces, we played chess - where soldiers and horses fight and retreat.
Unable to sever, Unable to think straight, Choked with emotion, my throat feels locked. Drunk with poetry and music, it feels like my liver and intestines are severed.
(From the poem The Joy of Meeting by Li Yu
The cool breeze brings about a slight chill and irritation; one side of the woman’s face is dolled up beautifully, while the other side is wrinkled with worry

I probably want to articulate some more thorough thoughts once I’m done rereading svsss, but I definitely think that the emotional thread that draws me the hardest into the book is like… Luo Binghe keeps hurting Shen Qingqiu, or being semi-responsible for the ways Shen Qingqiu gets hurt. It starts as early as their field trip to find the Skinner, where Ning Yingying gets captured while Luo Binghe was supposed to be looking out for her, and it results in Shen Qingqiu getting knocked out and stripped and tied up and almost skinned.
And it continues with moments like Shen Qingqiu being poisoned by Without A Cure, or Shen Qingqiu jumping in front of Binghe’s attack in his dream realm, rather than letting Binghe inadvertently damage his own mind. And of course, there’s a lot happening on Shen Qingqiu’s side too, where both for story-ordained reasons and personal-strategizing reasons, he puts Luo Binghe in danger or lets him get hurt, and he will eventually be responsible for throwing Luo Binghe into the Abyss, but Binghe doesn’t know that.
And what really, really draws me in is the escalation of guilt and grief on Luo Binghe’s part over time, especially when it eventually means that Shen Qingqiu dies…. because of him. Was it voluntary/deliberate on Shen Qingqiu’s part? Sure. Is it still perfectly crafted for Luo Binghe to blame himself? Oh my goodness, yes. I live for the ways he lashes out and acts poorly after the Abyss, but I absolutely adore the way things go after the five year timeskip, where he’s at his lowest emotional point, and has been stewing in a mixture of grief/guilt and bitterness/resentment without being able to speak to Shen Qingqiu to resolve any of those issue.
Because! By the time we get to the climactic scene, with its deliberately-terrible sex scene, Luo Binghe sees that he’s hurt Shen Qingqiu, again, and in such a way– And it’s crushing! It’s awful! Shen Qingqiu is thinking ‘oh my god, i’m the one who just dealt with this, can’t I be the one to start crying???’ which, super fair. But the whole middle of the story has been about how these two are not naturals at clear communication, and it makes such a perfect point for Luo Binghe’s emotions to go.
As far as he’s concerned, Shen Qingqiu is the most important person in the entire world to him, the only person in the world who really matters– And Luo Binghe is apparently completely incapable of not-hurting him. The times when he’s failed to protect Shen Qingqiu are bad enough, but since he was a child, he’s watched Shen Qingqiu get hurt because of him, or even worse, by him, and even now, he’s looking at what he just did to Shen Qingqiu, what should have been an intimate, tender act, where instead Shen Qingqiu is… more dazed and bleeding, and also dying just a little bit. And Shen Qingqiu again chose to let this happen, he knew what he was getting into, but that doesn’t make it any less devastating for Luo Binghe when he thinks, I did this to Shizun.
There’s something about that scene that I just can’t get enough of. The dull, miserable unhappiness that Luo Binghe brings into the early part of the scene is wonderful, especially since he’s made a really serious effort to express that this has been a long-building breakdown about how nobody, ever, is willing to choose him. But then, after it’s all said and done, and he sees what he’s done to Shen Qingqiu, no matter how consensual it was, it’s even worse. He’s panicking, he’s horrified, he asks Shen Qingqiu why he didn’t just kill him.
It’s all so compelling to me! I can’t think of many relationships I’ve read that have that particular panicked, unhappy edge to them, especially ones that do wind up happy in the end. All of the mxtx romances have a very different flavor to them, and I think her writing advances in leaps and bounds between her first book and her third. But there’s just something about this that always, always gets me so good. I can see that the book is weaker in ways that her later books aren’t, but I still love it so very much. The leads of her other books have their own deep emotions and moments of intense unhappiness, of course, but there’s something about Luo Binghe’s emotions, and how strongly they come through even when he’s not the pov character, that I just… I love him, your honor
binghe goes in for the KISS
ok shizun

a final and long-awaited reveal 🦋 | Heaven Official’s Blessing Ep.11
every day i am percieved™️
There is a reason for this though!
The original tweet summarizes it pretty well. Fanfic tends to be popular among certain types of neurodivergent people (aka people most likely to read excessively as a child, and have burnout as an adult) for the same reasons that we tend to hyperfixate–neurochemical signaling (I hope I’m using that phrase correctly). What I mean is, for people who are really dependent on changes in dopamine/serotonin/neurotransmitter levels, who have low levels or wonky neural reward systems (perhaps the most common types of neurodivergence)…people like us rely on dependable external sources of those neurochemicals. In order to function, we spend a lot of our free time trying to level out our brain chemistry using things that can reliably bring us a steady stream of joyful moments (rewards) without costing too much of the mental effort that is already in short supply.
significantly: the investment of reading has to be balanced with a steady “return on investment”–and this return has to start fairly quickly. because again, we don’t have a lot of attention/energy to invest on tiring things. we have perpetual “low batteries” in that regard.
that doesn’t mean these stories are “simple,” or that they lack complexity or value–only that the reward has to come in short regular intervals, and it has to have a low “upfront cost.” these stories are only “easy” to read in the sense that the effort we put into them is rewarded in a timely manner. which is why fanfic stories are so perfectly formulated for neurodivergent readers–they are often beautifully written, but skip a lot of the upfront costs (of introducing new characters, of world-building, of getting the audience emotionally connected to the story elements).
the nature of fanfiction is that the reader has a pre-existing relationship with this world and these characters. that–combined with the shorter average length of fics–means that fan fics very quickly start rewarding the reader in a way that traditional fiction struggles to. that’s not a bad thing! and maybe it’s something more traditionally published writers should be paying attention to.
Fanfic, as a genre, has been uniquely helpful and accessible to many neurodivergent readers who would otherwise struggle to immerse themselves in stories. I’m glad so many of you have found a way to love and enjoy reading again! The important thing is that you are spending time inside stories you love–the way those stories are published or presented to the world is just one detail. The fact that you find joy in the process of reading (or listening!) to stories–that is what matters.
I feel understood 🥰
a bunch of people have reblogged this with the default “i feel called out” reaction….and i know when we say that we mean it tongue-in-cheek….but this comment sorta blew my mind & shifted my perspective up and to the left a little thank you♥

Yep I wasn’t going to make another translation since he had already released one out, but the translation of the song lyrics isn’t complete in that video especially when the voice actor intersects with the song lyrics - and I also disagree with some of his translation decisions hence I wrote mine independent of his! :) It’s still a competent translation so I would encourage everyone to check both out and see the differences in translations. :)

‘There was no way for Luo BingHe to believe that the shizun who treated him so well would really push him down.
Even though the Xiu Ya sword stabbed at his chest, he was still holding onto that last thread of hope.’
