Huorgh, i know I'm still recovering from long work trip, but i need to muster my energy to pursue actual activities/accomplishments in this coming week, otherwise it's going to smoosh into my NEXT work trip, and I'll just be an extra restless toddler who's extra primed to throw a tantrum. I can tell this weekend will mush away from me in a blur of social media refreshing if i let it. When work lands on Monday i need to play catch-up on several projects and prepare slides for next week. I forced myself to go Out for errands today, which was good for me, but tomorrow i should plan in an Activity
Fun activities:
Digital art (iffy motivation)
Writing (ambition is there, focus is questionable)
Painting (high effort investment)
Break out a new craft (lace, tatting, bead weaving)
Start new quilt (the boring washing and ironing fabric part)
Responsible activities:
Keep reorganizing basement
Replace armoire door hardware
Vacuum (hrghhh)
Hardware store (stair railing bolts, planter stands)
Plan back yard planting
So there I was, attempting to make over the most ugly and neglected room in this house, the basement bedroom. This has been a long process, interrupted by several major disruptors like my brother getting married and my parents moving out of town. But I'm just about there.
I'm my youthful, hopeful innocence (two days ago), I was like ah, i should take a closer look at this window that has never opened. Give it a good college try. That was no good, but i persevered!! I'd already removed three generations of curtain rod hardware from this thing, surely at least i can replace the latch hardware? It would be darn cute, after all, if it hadn't been given the landlord special.
Oh, and would you look at that, one of these has a lock i don't have a key for. Ohoho, then i will responsibly remove these and paint the windows and replace them with new hardware on the morrow!
...............what kind of screwdriver head goes in that hole
WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S DESIGNED TO BE TIGHTENED BUT NOT LOOSENED????????????
Anyways, in the throes of my sudden anger headache, i went to go try to open the washing room window, which has also never opened, and uh
EMPHATICALLY not my weekend, lads π₯²
I think. I'm gonna fight the evil screws a little more by hand before i escalate (dremel. I'm making my own screw head, with blackjack, and hookers), but I'm p sure I have to compose a very embarrassing message to my handyman tomorrow like heyyyyyy soooooooo do you replace windowsssss
HA!!!!!!!!!!!
Only took me uhhhhh an hour and a half struggling with a dremel, screwdrivers, pliers, extreme upper body strain, etc to remove five (5) screws. Let me tell you. The easiest part of each removal was when it was undone enough that i could get needlenose pliers around the threaded part of the screw and do an eighth turn at a time. I was going to drill to install one last vent cover but Hoo Boy i wasn't kidding about the upper body strain, I'm gonna lie down now.
My consolation is that the half lock that was already missing? EXTREMELY mutilated compared to all of the removals I did myself. I choose to believe that whoever made this choice originally was eventually punished for their actions π₯²

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Chapters: 9/10
Fandoms: Naruto, The Books of the Raksura
Rating: E
Pairings: Hatake Kakashi/Uchiha Itachi
Chapter Warnings: the inherent PTSD of owning a Sharingan (aka mild gore, unreality)
Kakashi rubs his cheek against the other consort's shoulder as his gaze drifts down. His hands are covered in blood. His heart stops. The blood drains down the sink alongside the stream from the tap, a pale and watered down pink. The gore on his hands is thicker, half-congealed. Fresh enough to pool in the bends of his knuckles, the splatter up to his elbows; old enough to have gone lukewarm, the exact temperature of his skin. It smears across the dark red fabric of Itachi's shirt, right over his stomach, where Kakashi's rigid fingers curl.
it's the Nart chapter. yes, yes, I'm a caricature of myself, I know.
(also also, fun fact β I'm thinking that Raksura 'alcohol' can only theoretically be derived from the one kind of poison we know explicitly affects themβ¦Fell poison. sake that makes your scales goΒ brr.)
Okay! I have been busy. My god have I been busy. So, my little brother got married this weekend! Naturally, I claimed the right to make the guestbook. And also naturally, I dramatically underestimated how much work this was going to be. I have not known rest for the last month.
So, here's the exterior. Nice and simple and elegant!! Very straightforward!
Then, there's the inside. I was like 'hmmm, well, they met when they were working at a video game store together. And they still game a lot together and it's important to them. I know, I'll draw this thing like an illuminated manuscript!!'
Reader, this is where I lost control of the situation. This is where we come to the fact that I'll have to reblog this multiple times just to attach all the relevant images. I came up with eleven "main" images, eleven simple verso images so people wouldn't sign the wrong spot by mistake, two inhabited initials for the couple, and one demo page not included in the book directly explaining the concept for how the pages were laid out (spot for name + spot for message). I finished that last page uhhhh thursday. For a saturday wedding.
Before I get any deeper, i have to give MASSIVE props to the dobie draws 'codex pokemonus' illuminated manuscript zine. I highly recommend checking that link out, because it's a delight. I bought this thing, ohh... I'm not even sure. At LEAST half a decade ago. When i was gathering all my references and resources for this project, this was unquestionably the most helpful one. The influence is most obvious in the venusaur vines the pokemon pages, but it was truly, genuinely a LIFESAVER when it came to references for how hands and feet and faces could be drawn for little Creatures, and I'm so grateful. I would also like to state for the record that i learned medieval notation specifically to transcribe the jigglypuff song and that may be the detail that delights me most in this whole project
And since i have one spare image slot left, I'll also throw in one of my verso images, as a teaser while i line up my next reblog
He's beautiful π
And an interlude for the rest of the verso images!!! So here, I wanted to draw from VINTAGE video games, to pander to entertain the older generations attending the wedding. I tried to draw from the atari/activision era, where things had some graphics, but aiming to land before 3d really took off. And at first I was like 'huehuehue I'm so clever, all of these character designs will be so much more simple--'
No. I am boo boo the fool, most of these designs were so simple they were plain impossible for my sleep deprived brain to draw π So some of these draw from the games directly, and some are more from the cabinet or box art, whatever i could find with a visual identity to latch on to.
So, for roll call purposes here, in order on the tumblr post, we've got: qbert, pitfall (featuring a beautiful pixel rope), frogger, major havoc, centipede, pac-man (both man and ghost), space invaders, berserk, yar's revenge, annnnnd et!
I think pitfall was what sold me on this idea conceptually, but et is my absolute favorite of the bunch. Look at him. Look at my wonderful hideous son. One thing i learned on this project is that if you're trying to get an illuminated manuscript vibe and it just isn't landing, try drawing the eyes Wrong, and that's very likely to do the trick
I think I can fit everything into one last post!! Okay okay okay, so i hit three of the BIGGEST nostalgic franchises (mario, zelda, pokemon) in the first post. But then there were also five others, where I drew one page each. Donkey kong was actually the first page i started sketching out of the whole bunch, and by the time i got to king k rool, i was like okay. okay. this is going to work.
All of these pages were SO fun. Browsing the kirby wiki for the funnest little Creachurs was a delight. Working on mother brain was one of my favorite parts. The sonic page is my favorite concept out of the whole lot, using the loop as a frame for the message portion. And of course, once I was reminded of the animal crossing wedding couple, they HAD to feature prominently π
BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE. My brother and his now-wife play world of warcraft together. He got her into it, and I think that's a cruel thing to do to your partner, but what do i know. And a few of their guildmates were even invited to the wedding! So a couple months back, i asked them for images of their characters, "for reasons." The reasons were to draw them each inhabited initials for the title page of the book :3c
(my brother, at the wedding: 'i thought you just wanted them for inspiration!!!' me, cackling: 'FOOL. when have i ever practiced self-restraint when it comes to crafts?????β)
And then!!!! In chronological order, this is where i paused to draw the eleven verso images in a fever haze and actually printed the book and made it. Fun story, my printer started misprinting images in the middle of this and I had to make a trip to my parents' place and use their printer to get the actual book pages. But once it was assembled and drying (it was a k118, also, which i don't think i mentioned), I staggered back to my tablet and drew a demo page for how i envisioned the signings. My little treat to myself is that it features haggard versions of me, including skeleton me in the corner.
And it all worked! It all worked out really well!! I'm SO glad its over, and I have two sets of lotr that I made concurrently as gifts that i need to scrape together a post for. But this came together better than I could have hoped, and I have learned important lessons about how long art like this takes me π€£ But I've also learned how to do these pseudo-illuminated pages and the term 'inhabited initial'! I definitely, DEFINITELY plan to use that knowledge for much goofier and more frivolous purposes as soon as I rest up a bit. This was a much bigger project than I expected, but I'm SO happy with it
And one more bookbinding post! A shorter one. For my brother's wedding, he requested lotr. And I also have another cousin who is recently married and was supposed to he holding a wedding this year, but he and his wife were in a bad car accident that wasn't remotely their fault (rear-ended into incoming traffic), and recovery has been pretty long and gnarly, but I wanted to give them something nice as well. So! Double lotr, all the way across the sky.
I originally planned to mix it up more on the vibes between the two editions (partly so I myself could keep them straight and didn't gift the couples copies with the wrong names), but.... these marble print fabrics are just too powerful, I couldn't say no. I did enough differentiating with the titling and endpapers, it all worked out!
And, naturally, they both needed some edge illustration to take it to the next level!!
So, the green set. I found this gorgeous black and white paper a couple weeks ago at my local art store, and it was SO striking that I grabbed a couple sheets. I was worried at first that it was going to be too busy with the marbled fabric on the cover, but couldn't find anything else that sparked joy, and... i shouldn't have stressed so much, the combo is fantastic. I should trust the maximalist voices in my head! For this one I drew the scene from osgiliath, looking out at minas tirith
After THAT, i was looking to draw something that specifically wasn't More Buildings π I had a pretty magenta paper I've been sitting on that harmonized surprisingly well with the minor colors in the blue fabric. I originally had my eye on a matching leather, but backed away to the same warm navy hide I used for the guestbook, which really gave the whole thing some nice dignity. And the opposite of drawing buildings is drawing CREATURES, so i went absolutely ham on balrog cross-hatching
Both these sets were a ton of fun and came out deliciously! And finished drying two whole days before the wedding! I got PLANY of time π€£ But truly, I'm not very good at repeating myself, so it means a lot to me that I can be this many lords of the rings deep and still be finding new ways to delight myself. I had a lot of fun with these sets!!
your lotr edge illustrations are crazy gorgeous!!! how do you get the edges smooth enough to draw on? when I've used an x acto knife it comes out wobbly and when I've used sandpaper the pages feel swollen.... beautiful work anyhow!
Totally!! So i use a beefy paper guillotine, not one of the ones with a simple up and down lever on the blade, but one of the BIG boys that gives you a better mechanical advantage
It was a bit of an investment, but the single most useful piece of equipment I've bought for bookbinding!!
And i can speak to some of the other options too!! An xacto knife is going to give you more trouble than it feels like, because the length of the blade itself is pretty short. Once you get a little ways down into your text block, it's going to be REAL easy to go wandering away from your straight edge, or just for the handle to start bumping into things and causing problems.
I know that chisels are a classical solution for trimming books like this because they gave a long, flat surface that's nice and easy to slide along, but it is also relatively dangerous if you don't take care with your setup!! I used scrap wood and G clamps to try to chisel trim a book a while back, and let's just say the stability was... not good. I stopped after chiseling my knuckle pretty good, but i did recently buy a book press for giving this another go with the right equipment. You can also use specialized ploughs to trim like this, but chisels are probably a more affordable entry point.
But! Sanding is what i currently use when a book is too large to fit in my guillotine! And I know exactly what you mean about the pages bulging out. When im sanding a book, i clamp the edges of the pages HARD between scrap board and scrap wood and go from there with an orbital sander. It isn't a complete solution, I still find little fluffs of paper dust in the pages after I take it out, but it does give me enough to go on. The clamping I photographed here is for art rather than sanding, but it's a similar idea! I want the pages to he operating as a UNIT, i don't want them to be capable of separating and moving independently. For sanding, I don't use the carriage bolts, i use heavier duty clamps, but you can kind of see how clamping forces the text block to act more like a solid piece and less like individual leafs of paper
And I'll say, these days, im using an orbital sander and am picky about how flat things get, but one of my older edge painting projects is pretty UN-flat snd still worked extremely well! My single-volume tian guan ci fu was sanded by hand, which was a terrible idea and gave me so many blisters, and in the end, I didn't yet all of the sawtooth sanded out before I said it was good enough. You can still see the shadows of the little valleys on the left here. But it was still flat enough for a full art treatment! Once you clamp the edges and stop them from swelling, sanding can definitely get you to a good art surface one way or another (though i definitely recommend an orbital sander over your bare hands lmao)
The sacred texts.........

HI! We need HELP!
I don't know where to start this post so uh.
The very basics is that we're being evicted from the land that we've been working for the last five+ years to turn into a profitable farm (*mumblemumble generational trauma and family infighting mumble*)
The good news: there's options near by and I'm relatively confident we can qualify for a farm operations loan to secure new land!
The bad news: since goImagine closed, we've had to completely rebuild the store on a new platform and traffic/sale have cratered because no one knows where to find us. That's where you can help!
Please signal boost this post and check out our store!
We have soap, fiber, stickers and BRAND NEW lip balm! Our stuff is made from things we produce right here on our farm, and other ingredients and equipment sourced from local businesses.
Our current goal is to build up $2500 in capital and use that to fund purchases of more supplies and equipment for operation.
Big ticket items include:
A drum carder
New spinning wheel (in case I can't recover my old one)
An electric milker (I'm milking all of our sheep by hand currently!)
More soap molds
Getting the current back log of fleeces to our local mill to become yarn
This winter's supply of hay
And just various other supplies that are in constant need of reordering I have a LOT more planned, so please reblog this post and add our store to your watch list.
THANK YOU!
Ah, important note for anyone who wants to buy soap: stock on the Dad Hugs and Fragrance Free is low (about 5 bars left for each) and we will be vending in person this Sunday, so I can't guarantee the shop will reflect that accurately right away! Will hopefully get a chance to pour more next week but then it takes a couple weeks to cure, so snag em if you want em!
(And if you're in the Spokane area, we'll be at the North Town mall on Sunday, come say hi if you're not already burnt out from pride lol)

Sasuke's next words are a terse, tense mumble, aimed mostly at his feet. "Why won't he talk to me." β¦Ah. Kakashi scratches his jaw. "Who, Naruto?" It snaps Sasuke out of it. He looks at Kakashi, fiercely incredulous. "No! Itachi! My β" His mouth snaps shut. He clamps his gaze down and away again. Doesn't β can't β finish the sentence.
