HAPPY BIRTHDAY REPUTATION !! (November 10, 2017)
[ ID: Five gifs of Taylor Swift from the Reputation Era, all colored blue. First gif: a gravestone that says quote Here lies Taylor Swift’s Reputation endquote. Second gif: Taylor during the Reputation tour in a black and gold jacket, raising up her arms before bringing her elbows down dramatically. Third gif: Taylor in a bar in her End Game music video, raising up a glass for a toast before the rest of the bar raises their own glasses. Fourth gif: Taylor during the Reputation Tour, walking down the stage with two lights on her. Fifth gif: Taylor in the Ready For It?. She is an android exploding while lighting srikes around her and robots run towards her on a ledge. The side of the ledge reads quote They’re burning all the witches endquote End ID. ]
escapism is defined as: “the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment or engaging in fantasy.” each of the songs in this chapter reflect that theme deeply:
the lakes - taylor feels as though who she is at her core is being conflated with the public perception, but there are fragments of her life - like her lover - that ground her. she seeks a new home, an escape. not only an escape from the world she is living in, but from the person she has been painted as. she needs new inspiration, new scenery, and a new space to reflect on herself. in a society ridden with speculation and intrusion, that escape seems out of reach.
seven - in times of grief and heartbreak, we often look back on blurry, simple memories when our worlds were smaller, and longing for the people and environments that are faint in our rearview mirror now. the same idea as in the lakes - that common threads of identity and love remain no matter where we go - holds true here. maybe this is not a fantasy, as it’s true events she is looking back on, but the salience of this song’s presence here reflects the fantasy we all yearn for - to be kids again, and to note the rarity of what we are experiencing.
epiphany - a soldier’s comrade watches him fall on the battle field after fighting for his nation and for the values he has dedicated his life to, as a nurse watches a covid-19 patient die of a virus that has shaken up our society. both are disorienting and existential scenarios - we wonder, “what is my purpose?” “why wasn’t it me?” “is there nothing more i can do?” the answers to these questions lies in some fantasy we all yearn for at the tragic crossroads of life and death. it takes removing ourselves from the chaos to awaken ourselves to the simplicity of these things.
cardigan - a cardigan is a piece of clothing. a childhood love that broke us apart many years ago is a story we tell our children. similar to seven, perhaps it is only the tatters of past love that can carry us through our love today. however, cardigan is unique in that it emphasizes how no matter how deeply a person hurt us, the memory strengthens and grounds us. looking back on our lives in retrospect is often a source of comfort, but to be carried away into them makes us better lovers and better people.
mirrorball - when taylor feels broken down by how society has painted her, she looks to those exact people to build her back up again. for many of us, it takes adjusting how we perceive and present ourselves to feel safe in a world that is constantly judging us. perhaps when we face questions of our worth and purpose, getting lost in a fantasy of who we could be - and how the world would react to that - makes us more confident than when we consider who we know we are at our cores.
exile - the imagery of “crown” and “town” are used throughout this song; it’s about losing the people who defined us. so what is the fantasy we escape to when we struggle with miscommunication and lost love? the rest of this chapter. in the moment, we think we are leaving the relationship for good. but when we grow up, it appears in our dreams, our passed down stories, and our escapes to faraway lands. this song is both a prelude and an epilogue.
Hi, i'm coming back here for a very important reason I hope people understand and respect. I feel ashamed for talking about these things here but I wasn't so desperate and in need I wouldn't even mention it.
As most of you know, I live in Venezuela, a country that has been in crisis for a long time. And for the last 5 years, nothing has been easy. Almost 4 years ago, my family and I had to say goodbye to my father who moved out of the country to help us survive this mess, and it all has been in 'control'. But ever since the world has stopped everything for a very important reason (and you should stay home), my father hasn't been working so he can't send money or even pay his own bills, he is eating only twice a day so he can have food for more days. It's all been insane and I have kept my problems shut and pray everyday to get through this.
We only don't have my fathers financial help, we also have other problems here in my town, specifically in my community and street, we don't have water. And we have to pay someone who can bring water to our place and it's very expensive. Every thing is coming all together and it's very suffocating and stressing. I hate seeing my mom so tired desperate, it makes my heart ache.
Due to this pandemic alert, we can't go out and work, or try to make money cause nobody is actually working here. In this moment of need, I just need someone to tell me it's going to be okay, I know there are a lot of people who are in my position and honestly I pray everyday for everyone in this world, so that we can be safe, healthy and find ways to make it possible.
@taylorswift I know there are many many people doing this and you might not see this but I'm glad this can be a place where I can open my heart and try to calm myself. @taylornation
Thank you Taylor for helping other swifties, for doing your job by staying home and doing things for our beautiful people. You deserve heaven and all that's good in this world. I love you more than words. You are my star.

Folklore (2020)
the line “i was so ahead of the curve, the curve became a sphere... fell behind all of my classmates and ended up here” is dedicated to everyone who was declared gifted in elementary school and now has bad grades with a sprinkle of crippling anxiety
This line depicts beautifully how when you're the quiet one who follow all the rules in elementary school teachers appreciate you and tell you're parents how great you are but they don't notice that you're actually far behind your classmates socially and you end up being an adult with social anxiety and it feels like turning around a sphere that doesn't end. Just stuck.

Having to go out and interact with people, when I just want to process feelings alone.💔
My dearest @taylorswift
If we had writing classes together, I never would have had any notes of criticism for your work. I would have doodled Purple Hearts, or underlined significant prose, or written YES in all caps. When called upon to speak, i’d just tell you that it was all good and that your writing was nice. But that does not even begin to cover the admiration I have for your craft. I would probably never speak much, because I hate talking. But for you, I’d offer some home baked goods or show up too early to a house party you threw after finals. You are my favorite human, and I continue to be inspired by your writing.
Love Tigan💜
