Rewatching Book 3 of ATLA and cringing at how dumb the Iroh fanservice plot twists are:
"Iroh lied about killing the last dragon before Zuko was born because he wanted to protect them! They actually deemed him pure of heart and worthy to learn the truest form of firebending🥰" .......... even though he continued to be a violent general in an evil genocidal empire long after that...? I'm questioning the dragons' wisdom now.
"Actually Iroh and all the other old guys in the show are senior members of a super secret society working for the good of the world!!" ..... even though one of them flat out refused to teach the Avatar waterbending for misogynistic reasons, another refused to teach the Avatar firebending for personal reasons, and Iroh was an evil war general barely 6 years ago so I suppose he's only a recent member?
I love AtLA as much as anyone, but yeah it is, uh. Pretty abundantly clear that the White Lotus didn't exist in the writers' room until at least season two, and they didn't have a full idea of its role in the narrative probably until season three. The timeline on Iroh "Did A War Against All The Rest Of You" Azulonson joining and being trusted so high in the membership is also. Very questionable.
Which is all to say I think it would be perfect if we got to the season three end game and realized Iroh was actually still an errand boy initiate in the White Lotus. And Piandao pulls aside the main tent flap to reveal our Supreme Grand Lotus:
Gran-Gran
Canonically traveled the world without Committing A War, thus reasonably having met and networked with most of these other people in a positive way? Check
Saw the Avatar and told her only grandkids to go help that kid ASAP, don't worry Gran-Gran's just going to stay riiiiiight here while you're gone and definitely not relive the excitements of her youth? Check
Would recontextualize Pakku's constant sour grapes face (and his reaction to seeing Katara's necklace) to "my ex left me and now she's my superior, if I don't train her grandkid she will mobilize a global movement to Kick My Ass"? CHECK
Gran-Gran for White Lotus Grandmaster 2026
Listen, I love Iroh. He's one of my favorite characters, but Gran-Gran totally should have been the mastermind behind the White Lotus.
some grillbys
I completely agree with this.
"Brick shithouse" gotta be one of my fave body type descriptions.... so confusing to translate
@kassymalone
haha, so true. If I had to extrapolate... 🤔
'He was built like a brick shit house- rough and practical, less concerned with looking good and more on surviving whatever life could throw at him. When the nukes came and flattened all the buildings and trees he'd still be there, still square and looming and no uglier for the experience. A coat of paint and some flowers might distract for the moment, but you could never forget what he really was - something heavy, rough and only found in places you didn't want to be.'
All around a handy little descriptor!
Not quite, more like: big, square, and sturdy enough to take a hit. It's exclusively referring to physical build, saying nothing about the person's presentation or roughness.
I think an equivalent American phrase is built like a linebacker? For example, "no-one messed around in line because the bouncer was built like a brick shithouse" or "he was built like a brick shithouse: all hitting him would do is break your hand". Jon Cena is built like a brick shithouse.
Perhaps that's a regional difference @smile-2-b-happy. I'm considering the British usage.
I did consider personality in my description, but I'd never describe a larger man with a soft personality as a 'brick shithouse'. Even if they're physically identical, to me the phrase describes a rougher kind of person.
But language is versatile, as long as the general idea is conveyed

Just remembered the most bizarre PHM comment section on Tiktok I've seen so far where, with their full chest, multiple people claimed Eva Stratt had "the purest morals" because she loved humanity more than humans and, so, could never be "morally gray".
This woman nuked the artic.
She, quite literally, kidnapped a man, drugged him with an amnesiac drug, and sent him to die in space. Not just die, too, at best, commit suicide in space or starve to death in the hopes that he might find a solution to save the sun. All this after telling him he has no one, not even a dog, when he said no after being given 3 literal hours to decide. Everyone else on that list had years. He had hours.
No one knew this would work. That's why it was called "Project Hail Mary". And it, quite literally, would not have if Rocky hadn't been there waiting (I will not blame Stratt for this part since she had no way of knowing it would require outside help their over engineered ship could not provide).
Realistically, Doctor Ryland Grace would have spent his last days staring at an alien planet, unsure if the solution was there. Knowing no one cared that he'd die, the furthest that anyone had ever been from home. Knowing they'd all die too, that despite Stratt's best effort with the amnesiac drug, Grace still damned humanity with inaction. Because there was nothing he could do but take his own life knowing he was a failure with nothing.
So, no.
That was morally gray shit right there.
It wasn't even all condensed against one man. (paving over the Sahara and nuking the artic circle to speed global warming and grow enough astrophage for the trip, illegally downloading the entire fucking internet which is soooo fucking funny but still illegal) Which, as we all know, makes okay to commit heinous acts against because Girlboss™
(That was a joke, ISTG THAT WAS A JOKE)
He was the best person for the job.
But he was also just a man, scared to die for humanity not knowing if he would succeed. A man scared of unknown risk. A Ryland Grace who knew the future wouldn't have hesitated. But he didn't know.
No one did.
He had a life, for better or worse, and it's actually very morally gray to sacrifice someone else to save humanity. Especially while emphasizing that they're kind of a loser with no close friends or family to care if he suddenly vanished.
"Morally pure" would have been going herself. She'd had this man yammering in her ear for years now about astrophage, after all. Next best solution if the new, prime candidate would not go.
(There's the coma resistant gene thing, which I don't think she had, but I wouldn't put it past her to spend 4 years awake. Watching over the crew, studying microbiology to further their chances on an incredibly restricted diet or coma slurry).
Eva Stratt did the right thing, but it was not morally right that she did it.
There is no such thing as "morally pure", just people doing their best despite the circumstances.
Has this been done yet
Not really a pet peeve or even a complaint of mine but just something I mentally note when I read fics where Peter Parker or other spider people can’t thermoregulate.
Typically spiders can thermoregulate. Just not In the physiologically way most mammals do.
They change certain behaviors to avoid to seek out heat. They have colors or markings to better suit their environment and disperse temperature. Some have anti-freeze compounds in their body’s to resist the cold. Some go into hibernation like states to preserve essential functions.
Think of Peter sitting in the classroom and position himself in odd angles so he can soak up the sunlight coming in through the window.
Think of Peter going full emo in the winter as he’s entire closet goes black to absorb more heat. And then wearing exclusively light colors in the summer while walking around with a parasol like a frail Victorian woman avoiding a tan.
If you’re insinuating that Peter has absolutely no capacity to do this that means he should also not be shivering, sweating or constricting his surface blood vessels. He might even lack the ability to recognize temperature changes.
Peter should be in constant danger of overheating or hypothermia because not being able to maintain homeostasis whatsoever is extremely dangerous.
Peter should be afraid of overheating. He should patrol for a while and freak out because was be always this warm?
Peter should be the freak in gym who never wears deodorant because he literally doesn’t sweat.
Peter should be switching between layering up and removing layers repeatedly trying to keep it at a manageable temperature.
Peter should start to get tired and snap awake trying to decide if its because of the all nighter he pulled or if its the cold December air
Peter should just randomly get heat stroke on a day where it’s only 70 degrees because he didn’t notice he was over heating.
I personally love the trope of Peter having lots of spidery traits but sometimes I overthink the smaller details. I logically know it’s fiction and not real but I absolutely love when I’m reading a fanfic and suddenly there’s a twenty page semi-reasonable explanation to the characters powers especially when it’s written by people in STEM fields who know what their talking about
“Eridians dislike earth because they abandoned Grace.” *Incorrect Buzzer Sound* ya missed the point of the story buddy! It’s not about someone being ‘bad’ it’s about the incredible power of love and that love being worth dying for!
Gimmie Eridians who are absolutely heartbroken to hear that humans where so desperate and so scared that they where willing to part with not just one Grace, there were three of them! Gimmie Eridians touched to find that the humans planned a way for their sacrifices to be as comfortable as possible. Gimmie Eridians who send earth a message saying “We know it must have hurt to send your heroes to die, but one made it and he’s safe here. We lost 22 good Eridians on the journey we would have lost 23 if not for your Grace.”
Give me humans sitting on Earth slowly coming to the conclusion that when we look up not only are we not alone, someone out there is alive because of one of us. That no matter what we think of ourselves a whole species thinks highly of us because we helped save the galaxy. Give me humans who figure out how to send a probe to Erid filled to the brim with messages for Grace and footage of a monument being raised that reads his name, his crews names, and then “in memory of the 22 Eridians who lost their lives on the journey to save the stars.”
kissin kate barlow has the best villain origin story ever put to paper. if i fell in love with a sweet man who just wanted to sell onions and show of his sick carpentry skills and they killed him for being black i think i would also snap and kill everyone involved in the most ironic way possible.

Me as a child, who loved sci-fi, history and making up stories: It's pretty obvious that Aliens didn't build the pyramids, but what a fun idea! Aliens visiting less developed worlds like scientists, maybe they got attached to the people and wanted to help them advance, maybe they used them as slave labour to repair their ships or mine something, maybe they were just studying early life. Imagine the possibilities! Is this where Stargate got its ideas?
Me as an almost 40-year old adult, learning that by 'ancient aliens', what they actually meant was 'brown people couldn't have built this/figured this out so it had to be some kind of magical white man': WHAT THE FUCK
But seriously, I've been watching a youtuber recently who debunks conspiracy theories related to archaeology by looking at the actual historical evidence, and I used to like ancient aliens theories because they were patently absurd. Why would anyone believe that aliens used lasers to cut stones when there are sculptors and builders today doing the exact same thing with almost identical tools?
The amount of 'aliens' who get described by the conspirators as being 'tall, with pale skin, gold hair and blue eyes', like... wow. Talk about ruining an interesting premise for fiction because it turned out to be a different flavour of racism. (A lot of alternative spiritual practices that involve 'aliens' and 'frequencies' are also rooted in this bullshit, BTW. Look up 'tall white' or 'nordic' aliens if you don't believe me).
Am I stupid for not figuring that out before? I get that I couldn't hear the whistle because I'm not a dog, but I just lumped all that shit together with hollow earth and vaccines causing autism as 'complete fiction only idiots actually believe' and didn't think any more about it.
Angel bit their lip as they gazed at the limp plush in their hands. The one Prototype called 'Preston'. "Okay, let's try this... look up to say 'YES', downwards to say 'NO'. Got it?"
There was a moment of silence.
It lasted long enough that Angel's heart ached, wondering if they were just holding a dead body. The Prototype had been acting as though Preston was alive, but, honestly? They wouldn't blame him for being insane. They were pretty sure they lost their own mind a while ago.
And then, a soft noise.
Preston's eyes, his human, human eyes, moved up.
Angel felt themself relax, just slightly.
"So… your name is Preston, right?"
Up. Yes.
"Are you here willingly?" That felt like a non-question. Preston could barely move.
Up. Yes. Down. No.
"Is that a maybe?"
Up. Yes.
"Okay. So… do you want to leave?"
Up. Yes.
"Do you know where the negation formula is for the poppy gel? The Doctor is…" What was the best word for this? "Being himself?"
There was a faint noise. Was Preston laughing? Before they could ask, his eyes moved down. No.
"…do you have ideas where it might be kept?"
Up. Yes.
And then there was another noise, so low that they had to strain their ears to hear it. "I didn't hear that… hang on." They held him closer to his face and fought to keep their face from scrunching up. Preston smelled like gore, like fresh blood, and it wasn't his fault. "Say that again?"
It was raspy and soft, almost more of a moan than a proper word. "…don't…don't kill…"
"…don't kill him?"
Preston's eyes moved up.
Yes.
The girl is the same age.
Macaque isn't sure when he realizes that. Just that, one day, he looks up and goes Shit. She does not notice, more focused on her homework, so she does not notice him duck into the bathroom.
His mouth tastes like blood.
Qi Xiaotian had the same sunshine bright personality as the little monkey who followed Wukong around but the girl is the same age, same dark hair, same wide eyes.
For a moment, Macaque wonders.
If he was to split her open- blood staining everything and pooling, eyes wide, chest gasping for a last breath- as he did when he took that last step out of line...
Would he look down and see that monkey?
I truly believe that none understood the doctor more than Rory Williams the man that never shied away from telling the doctor exactly how dangerous he is how unhuman he could be but still saw him as his family and loved him like his family , Rory is one of the few companions that saw the doctor for who he truly was with all his faults and still accepted him and let's be honest Rory is the most similar companion to the doctor
i mean this is the same man who
so yeah, AGREE 💯
I forgot about that God I love Rory so much he's the best doctor who character 😭😭
And, my favorite follow-up
Just casually punching the guy that just got an army of powerful intergalactic beings to run away at the mention of his name for his girlfriend
Rory really gave zero fucks about who the doctor is he just wanted Amy 😭😭

Activities at a Japanese Nursing Home.
It sure the hell beats bingo ....
anyways. my final thoughts on the ai thing is that if you've used ai for fanfic writing, you can just stop. if youre genuinely just someone who's using it as a tool bc youve gotten used to it, its not too late to stop. I guarantee you that your writing will be better and all AI is teaching you is now how to write like AI. u need to learn how to write like u. and if you look, you Can find people in fandom to help you. theres someone who can help you proofread your fic, or tinker with your sentences. someone to help you with code. someone to help u find the answers to all your hockey questions. and itll be more fun this way
