Claws   unfurl   and   release   the   string   to   the   wind.   The   rosary   dangles   the   length   of   the   giant’s   height,   just   barely   missing   the   ground.   His   other   hand   slides   along   its   side,   fingers   passing   over   each   bead   in   turn,   winding   it   back   around   his   right   hand   without   missing   a   beat.   A   familiar   motion   ⸻   performed,   released,   and   restarted   like   ritual   clockwork.   Idle   hands   were   the   number   one   symptom   of   death   around   the   boss,   his   men   always   whispered.

Giannis   pauses   mid-stride,   both   talons   holding   the   rosary   halfway   wound   as   his   burning   stare   fixes   on   a   shape   curled   deep   in   the   alley’s   shadows.   A   little   thing,   barely   tall   enough   to   climb   over   the   toes   of   his   loafers.   The   ogre   finishes   wrapping   the   beads   before   stepping   into   the   long,   open   corridor.   His   claws   carefully   shift   up   the   thighs   of   his   slacks,   making   it   less   likely   that   bending   a   knee   will   burst   the   seams,   and   he   lowers   himself   to   inspect   the   pale   fluff   slumped   in   the   corner.   A   Birman   kitten.   Too   weak   even   to   flee   the   sheer   presence   of   the   devil   lord.   There   is   hesitation   as   he   reaches   out;   something   so   small   he   could   curl   his   fingers   and   crush   it.

He   wouldn’t.

❛   You   cost   quite   a   pretty   penny,   darling.   Who   has   lost   you?   ❜    These   breeds   weren’t   found   on   the   streets.   Not   when   they   cost   nearly   as   much   as   a   used   car.   Anger   flares,   hot   as   a   branding   iron.   Who   would   be   so   negligent?   Just   as   quickly,   the   fury   is   stolen   ⸻   funneled   into   the   beads,   swallowed   whole.   Giannis   rises   to   his   feet,   keeping   the   kitten   tucked   close   to   his   chest.   Scarlet   eyes   sweep   the   line   of   shops,   finding   nothing   nearby   that   might   immediately   solve   the   problem.   He   could   send   his   men   to   scour   the   streets   and   take   the   little   thing   home   in   the   meantime,   but   something   more   pressing   is   needed.   Just   enough   to   tide   it   over.

He   issues   quick   instructions   to   buy   food   for   a   kitten   ⸻   whatever   that   entails.   He’s   never   been   allowed   close   enough   to   one   to   know   its   diet.   The   café   across   the   street   might   have   milk,   right?   He’s   seen   them   drink   it   on   television.   Inside,   the   menu   proves   a   bust.   Who   comes   to   a   café   for   just   milk?   Giannis   pauses   to   seriously   ponder   this.   He’s   heard   humans   can   barely   digest   cow’s   milk   as   it   is—surely   it   would   be   too   much   for   something   so   small.   Goat’s   milk,   however,   would   be   easier   to   process.   Perhaps   just   enough   would   settle   its   stomach   until   dinner   could   be   found.

The   boss   steps   up   to   the   counter,   looming   over   the   cashier   as   he   asks,    ❛   Do   you   have   alternatives   to   milk?   Something   a   small   cat   might   be   able   to   drink   in   a   bind?   Money   is   hardly   the   issue.   ❜    Judging   by   the   Ferragamo   loafers   and   the   tailored   suit,   he   has   more   than   enough.   He   just   needs   something   fast,   something   that   will   do   for   now.

The   irony   is   not   lost   on   those   who   know   his   story:   Albessan   breeds   talent,   but   Helios,   for   all   his   raw   power,   shows   none   of   it.   His   magic   is   immense,   yes,   but   cannot   be   properly   measured   by   the   priests   without   an   attribute   —   a   sea   without   a   shore.   If   he   possesses   any   innate   skill,   it   lies   buried   beneath   the   weight   of   his   own   strength.

In   the   Caelumbrian   court,   however,   mastery   matters   less   than   blood.   The   empire   has   seen   dullards   and   weaklings   rise   to   the   throne   and   become   legends,   for   succession   is   not   decided   by   worth   but   by   leverage   —   by   whose   lineage,   alliances,   and   murders   most   please   the   gods   (or   so   they   say).   This   generation,   through   cruelty   and   cunning,   has   already   cut   itself   down   to   three   remaining   heirs.
