The Pitt Masterlist
Summary: While Jack is on the night shift, (Y/n) is home, struggling with worsening symptoms. She has to go back to the ER, where complications get critical.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sound of the door opening caught Jack's attention straight away. His brows furrowed and he straightened up in his seat, elbows propped up on the table as he waited for the only person it could be to walk down the hall towards the kitchen where he was sitting.
Jack hadn't been expecting her home this early. He knew that (Y/n)'s work schedule was much the same as his own, with them both working in the Pitt it meant they both knew what to expect. Shifts that overlapped, that stretched on into eternity, a shift finishing on time was a rarity in itself.
When their shifts collided like today where (Y/n) was scheduled on the day and Jack was due on the night, they were passing ships in the night. They would cross paths at the hospital, share a moment or two together, a quick goodnight kiss, and then (Y/n) would head home while Jack stayed.
He still had an hour before he had to leave for work. Why was she home already when Jack was fully expecting to see her at the Pitt?
Beyond Expectations
Summary: Mafia marriages aren't about love, but that doesn't mean you have to have low expectations for your future husband.
A/N: Reader is big, tall, female. No other physical descriptors used.
Warnings: Body shaming. Please let me know if I missed any!
In the game that is genetics you know you've lost. Most women take after their mother in terms of build. You took after your father. While any man would kill to be so tall and broad, it was social suicide for a woman.
You'd gotten your first taste of that when your "friends" went on a shopping spree for their birthday and you were the only one unable to try on any clothes as they were all too small. You'd grown too big for your mother's clothes and shoes by the time you were 13. None of the big name labels ever carried the latest fashion in your size. You'd had to stop trying because of the bile that rose in your throat every time the store assistant saw you come in with a look of fear, or worse, contempt.
Money could do so many things, but it couldn't make your body socially acceptable. Not without major surgeries that you were simply not willing to undergo.
Being the lady of the castle was no easy task even under normal circumstances, and these two weeks had been nothing but chaos.
But in your opinion, you were getting much better at it.
You and Robb made quite a successful team in Lord and Lady Starkâs absence. Everything in Winterfell was being handled quite effectively; the lady guests were welcomed and entertained while the lords held meetings with Robb. Preparations for the coming winter continued in the background not only for the bannermen and their families, but also for the small folk in Wintertown and all over the north. While most northerners still saw you as an outsider, you were beginning to prove yourself, and you were certain that Silas and your father wouldâve been very proud if they could see you now; you had already sent both of them ravens to tell them all about it.
The language between us 3
Pairing: Dean Di Laurentis x Deaf!reader
Summary: Dean never expected a simple accident in a crowded university hallway to stay on his mind for days. After an unexpected encounter with a girl he canât stop thinking about, heâs left questioning how much he takes communication for granted. Determined to make things right, Dean embarks on a journey that might change far more than just one first impression.
Ps: Dialogue in BOLD and ITALICS indicates that the characters are communicating in sign language.
Dialogue in BOLD only indicates that they are writing in the notebook.
Dean couldnât stop smiling. Even after he left the library.
When he left the library he found Beau sitting in the bench outside.
âWhat are you doing here?â
âYou know, u was just walking around campus and happen to be around and I saw a very interesting thing.â He said. âYou and your girlfriend.â
âSheâs not my girlfriend.â
âBut you clearly want her to be.â
âI donât even know her very well.â
âIt doesnât matter, you ran into her and since then you can stop thinking about her.â He says. âYouâre evens learning a new language to talk to her.â
âSheâs just interesting, doesnât mean Iâm gonna marry her.â
âBut you will, eventually.â
After that, Beau spent twenty straight minutes making kissing noises every time he looked in Deanâs direction.
He didnât care.
She had smiled at him. Not just smiled.
She had offered to help him. And he knew he was gone.
⸝
âSoâŚâ Garrett dropped onto the couch in the hockey house living room.
âWhenâs the wedding?â Dean didnât even look up from his phone.
âThere isnât one.â Logan walked in carrying a bowl of popcorn.
âI donât know, man.Youâve already got the âmeeting the parentsâ smile.â
Dean snorted.
âI hate you.â
âYou love us.â
âI tolerate you.â Beau came downstairs with a grin that immediately worried Dean.
âOh, he definitely loves us.â Dean narrowed his eyes.
ââŚWhy are you smiling like that?â
Beau held up his phone.
âI have evidence.â Dean froze.
ââŚWhat evidence?â Beau tapped his screen.
âThe security camera footage from the library.â Dean blinked.
âThe what?â
âIâm kidding.â Dean threw a pillow at him.
Beau laughed so hard he nearly fell over the back of the couch.
âYou shouldâve seen your face.â Garrett pointed at Dean.
âYouâve changed.â
âI have not.â
âYou smiled.â
âSo?â
âWith your eyes.â Dean looked horrified.
âWhat the hell does that even mean?â
âIt means,â Tucker said as he walked into the room, âyouâre gone.â
Dean sighed dramatically.
âI had one conversation.â Beau corrected him.
âYou had one conversation where you barely knew three signs.â Dean crossed his arms.
âAnd?â
âAnd somehow she still looked at you like you were adorable. And you loved it.â
Dean groaned.
âCan everyone stop calling me adorable?â
âNo.â Five voices answered at once.
⸝
The next afternoon Dean arrived at the library fifteen minutes early.
He pretended he wasnât nervous.
But he absolutely was.
He had changed shirts three times.
Beau noticed.
Garrett noticed.
Even Logan noticed.
Dean denied all accusations.
He wasnât trying to look nice.
He just⌠Didnât like the other shirts.
That was his story.
He was sticking to it.
⸝
She was already there when I arrived.
This time, though⌠There were two coffees waiting.
She looked up when she noticed him approaching.
Her face immediately brightened.
Deanâs heart did something embarrassing.
He sat across from her.
She pushed one of the coffees toward him.
He pointed to himself.
âFor me?â She nodded.
Then signed slowly.
Hello.
Dean immediately signed back.
Hello.
Her smile widened.
Then she pointed to herself.
Very slowly.
Carefully.
Making sure he could follow.
My⌠name⌠is⌠Y/N.
Dean repeated the signs under his breath.
Y/N.
He smiled.
Then pointed at her.
YouâŚbeautiful.
He signed awkwardly.
But the sign came out completely wrong.
Y/N blinked. Then burst into silent laughter.
Her shoulders shook and she covered her mouth.
Dean frowned.
ââŚWhat?â
She reached for her notebook.
You just told me Iâm a potato.
Dean stared at the page.
I did what?
She nodded enthusiastically.
His face turned bright red.
âOh my God.â She laughed even harder.
Dean buried his face in his hands.
I practiced that all morning.
She wiped tears from the corners of her eyes before writing again.
You meant âbeautiful.â
She crossed out the imaginary mistake and carefully drew the correct handshape beside the word.
Then she demonstrated it.
Slowly. Dean copied her.
âNo?â
She gently shook her head.
Moved his fingers with incredible patience.
âThere.â
He tried again.
Her face lit up.
She gave him a thumbs up.
Dean grinned.
âI did it?â She nodded.
Then wrote:
Much better. Now Iâm not a potato anymore.
Dean laughed loud enough that two students looked over and shushed him.
He mouthed a silent apology.
Y/N giggled again.
⸝
For the next hour she taught him.
Not from a textbook.
Not from a YouTube video.
From real conversation.
Every sign came with a smile.
Every mistake ended with her laughingânot at him, but with him.
She taught him:
Friend.
Coffee.
Book.
Study.
Thank you.
Whenever he forgot a sign, sheâd patiently repeat it.
Whenever he got one right⌠She looked genuinely proud.
It made him want to learn faster.
⸝
An hour later Dean signed something.
Very carefully.
Very slowly.
You⌠patient.
She blinked. Then smiled.
She signed back just as slowly.
You⌠trying.
Dean understood.
Every word.
His eyes widened.
âI got it.â
She nodded excitedly.
He laughed.
âI actually got it.â
She clapped silently.
Dean couldnât remember the last time heâd felt this proud over something so small.
⸝
Someone was watching through the window.
Garrett.
Beside him stood Hannah.
Logan.
Beau.
Tucker.
And Allie.
Beau folded his arms.
âI told you.â Garrett looked genuinely shocked.
âIâve never seen him look at anyone like that.â Hannah smiled softly.
âHe really likes her.â Allie nodded.
âHeâs looking at her like sheâs the only person in the room.â
InsideâŚ
Dean was completely unaware of his audience.
He was too busy trying to remember another sign.
He accidentally signed something.
Y/Nâs eyes went wide.
Then she burst into laughter again.
Dean sighed.
âWhat now?â
She grabbed the notebook.
You just asked if my grandmother is a dinosaur.
Dean stared at the page.
ââŚHow?â
She demonstrated the difference between the two signs.
They were almost identical.
Almost.
Dean leaned back in his chair.
âI am never going to get this.â
She immediately shook her head.
Then she signed slowly enough for him to understand.
You will.
He looked at her hands.
Then at her eyes.
Then back to her hands.
He understood every word.
His smile returned.
âOkay.â
He signed the next sentence with exaggerated concentration.
One sign.
Pause.
Second sign.
Pause.
Third sign.
She watched patiently.
FinallyâŚ
He finished.
Thank⌠you⌠Y/N.
She froze.
It was the first time heâd signed her name correctly.
Perfectly.
She reached across the table without thinking and gently squeezed his hand.
Just for a second.
Then quickly pulled away, cheeks turning pink.
Dean looked down at where her hand had been.
Then back at her.
Neither of them saidâor signedâanything.
But for the first timeâŚ
The silence between them didnât feel awkward.
It felt comfortable.
Outside the window, Beau looked at Garrett.
âSoâŚâ Garrett sighed dramatically.
âOur boy is completely screwed.â
Beau grinned.
âNo.â He watched Dean smiling at Y/N through the glass.
âI think heâs exactly where heâs supposed to be.â
Robb looked over his shoulder to check where his little brother was rushing off to, then approached you and pressed a kiss on your temple.
âHere you are,â he said and touched the small of your back before he sat down, so you took the seat next to Jonâs. âWhereâs he going?â
âTo the yard, Iâd say,â Jon answered while you stared at the entrance, your mouth half agape.
âHeâs covered in mud,â you managed to say, âand he ate food without cleaning his hands.â Â
âAye, he does that.â
Your eyes widened. âBut thatâs not healthy!â
âHe has never fallen ill his entire life,â Jon said and Robb nodded.
âBesides, itâs Rickon,â he stated as if that was enough of an explanation, and reached out to nick a piece of bread from Jonâs plate, but Jon swatted his hand away.
âGo get your own plate!â
âIâm not really hungry.â
âThen keep your hands off my food!â
âSo youâre saying you wonât share your bread with me? Your brother? Your blood?â
âAye, thatâs what Iâm sayingââ
âDid someone at least tell Rickon that itâs not good manners to walk around covered in mud?â
âMultiple septas did.â Robb filled himself a drink and offered you, but you shook your head. âHe doesnât listen.â
âBesides, heâs northern,â Theon said. âHeâs not gonna grow to be one of those flowery Reach knights with their southern manners and poemsââ
âAnd what is it with your animosity toward poetry, Greyjoy?â you asked with a frown. âIs it because you canât read?â
Enemy Blood {Garrett Graham x twin sister} Part 4
Masterlist
Summary: Twelve years ago, Y/N Graham ran away and left her twin brother behind. Now she's back, wearing their dead mother's name on her jerseyâand Garrett is about to learn that some wounds don't heal just because you stop talking about them.
Warnings: angst, twin sibling drama, hockey rivalry, family trauma, estranged siblings, garrett graham deserves a headache, reader chooses violence, eventual sibling reconciliation
Garrett had never liked hospitals.
The smell was enough to make his chest tighten.
Disinfectant.
Coffee that had been sitting too long.
The quiet shuffle of nurses' shoes against polished floors.
He hadn't been back since the day they told him his mother wasn't coming home.
Even now, standing outside the automatic doors, he wondered if he'd made a mistake.
Maybe this was pointless.
Maybe there wouldn't be any answers.
Still, his feet carried him inside.
"Can I help you?"
The receptionist smiled politely.
Garrett cleared his throat.
"I'm... looking for some information."
"Regarding?"
"My mom."
He gave her name.
Her smile softened almost immediately.
"I'm sorry. We wouldn't be able to release any medical records."
"I know."
He looked down at the counter.
"I just..."
He wasn't even sure what he was asking anymore.
"I was wondering if anyone still worked here who might remember her."
The woman thought for a moment.
"There are a few long-serving nurses, but it has been a long time."
Garrett nodded.
"Forget it."
He turned to leave.
"Mr. Graham?"
He looked back.
"If you were a child at the time... there should have been a family liaison officer."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Y/N stood outside Eastwood's rink with her hands buried in the pockets of her hoodie.
Rain drizzled steadily, turning the pavement dark.
She watched students hurry past without really seeing them.
Her phone buzzed.
Coach: Everything okay?
She typed back before she could overthink it.
You: Fine.
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Coach: You've never lied well.
She smiled despite herself.
You: I'm working on it.
Another message.
Coach: Dinner tonight. No excuses.
She slipped the phone back into her pocket.
Coach had been the closest thing she'd had to family for almost a decade.
He never pushed.
He just... stayed.
Some days that was enough.
Back at Briar, Garrett sat alone in one of the empty lecture theatres.
His laptop was open.
Dozens of tabs filled the screen.
Old newspaper articles.
Archived hockey tournaments.
Eastwood athletics.
Anything with the name Y/N Wilkinson attached to it.
There was so much.
Regional championships.
Academic awards.
Community outreach programmes.
An interview from her first year at Eastwood.
He clicked it.
The student reporter asked the usual questions.
Favourite player.
Pregame routine.
Biggest inspiration.
Y/N laughed.
"My mom."
Garrett's chest tightened.
The interviewer looked confused.
"You've mentioned her a few times."
"I owe everything to her."
Garrett smiled without meaning to.
That sounded like her.
Always talking about Mom.
Then he kept reading.
'She always believed I'd find somewhere I belonged, even when I didn't believe it myself.'
His smile faded.
The article had been published two years after she'd disappeared.
She couldn't have been talking about their mother.
Could she?
He read the line again.
And again.
Nothing made sense.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dinner was quiet.
Coach cooked.
Y/N washed up.
It had always been their arrangement.
He never trusted her near expensive pans.
She never trusted him to stack a dishwasher properly.
"You've been somewhere else all evening."
She dried another plate.
"I know."
"You going to tell me?"
"No."
He nodded once.
"Fair enough."
Silence settled between them.
Comfortable silence.
The kind she'd once had with someone else.
"You saw him."
She stopped drying the plate.
"Word travels fast."
"It does around hockey."
Coach stirred the sauce absentmindedly.
"How'd it feel?"
Y/N let out a breath she hadn't realised she'd been holding.
"...Like opening a door I'd nailed shut years ago."
Coach looked over.
"And?"
"There was still someone standing on the other side."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Garrett pulled into the cemetery just before sunset.
He hadn't planned on coming back.
But something had been bothering him all day.
He walked the same path as yesterday.
Past his mother's grave.
Past the neighbouring headstone.
The flowers were gone.
Not dead.
Gone.
Someone had been here.
Recently.
His eyes dropped to the damp earth.
Fresh footprints.
Small.
Boot prints.
He crouched instinctively.
Still visible despite the rain.
His stomach twisted.
He was too late.
Again.
Y/N stood beneath the old oak tree on the far side of the cemetery.
She always parked at the back entrance now.
Fewer people.
Less chance of being recognised.
She hadn't seen Garrett.
She didn't know he'd been there an hour earlier.
She knelt in front of her mother's grave.
The marble looked colder than she remembered.
She brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.
"I saw him."
Her voice barely carried above the wind.
"I told myself I'd be angry."
She laughed quietly.
"I was."
She rested her palm against the stone.
"But..."
Her eyes burned.
"He looked so much like you."
The words caught in her throat.
"I hated that."
She swallowed hard.
"I hated that he still smiles like you."
For a long time she just sat there.
Listening to nothing.
Then she reached into her coat pocket and unfolded the note she'd found beneath her apartment door.
You can't outrun where you came from.
She stared at it.
Someone knew.
Not just who she was.
Who she'd been.
Slowly, she folded it back up.
"I don't know who's looking for me."
The wind picked up.
"But if it's him..."
She looked down at the name engraved beneath her fingertips.
"...please don't let him get hurt because of me."
She stood, pulled her hood over her head and walked away.
She never noticed the bouquet she'd left beside the headstone had shifted slightly in the breeze.
Or the man standing several rows away, hidden behind a line of evergreens.
Watching.
Waiting.
Patient.
Summary: They were never nothingâbut John Logan made sure they were never something either. Until the night he sees her with someone else... and realises too late what he let slip away.
Warnings: emotional, happy memories
Ophelia says Mama two weeks later.
There is no audience this time.
No phone propped against a mug while Garrett and Hannah argue through the speaker. No pancakes burning on the stove. No Dean sending voice messages before breakfast.
There is only you, sitting on the bathroom floor, trying not to cry where your daughter can see you.
It has been a difficult morning.
Not a terrible one. Nothing has happened that would sound particularly serious if you tried to explain it to somebody else. Logan left early for practice. Ophelia refused most of her breakfast, threw the rest onto the floor and then cried because the food was on the floor.
The washing machine stopped halfway through a cycle.
You spilled your tea.
One of Opheliaâs favourite toys has vanished despite the fact that she cannot possibly have taken it outside the house herself.
Small things.
Ordinary things.
The kind of things you are supposed to be able to handle.
Usually, you can.
Today, your patience runs out before the morning does.
It happens during Opheliaâs nappy change.
She will not stay still.
The second you lay her down, she rolls onto her stomach and tries to crawl away. You turn her back. She twists again. One foot catches the clean nappy and sends it onto the floor.
âOphelia.â
Your voice comes out sharper than you intend.
She pauses.
Just for a second.
Her dark eyes meet yours.
Then her bottom lip begins to tremble.
The guilt is immediate.
Hot and heavy beneath your ribs.
âOh, no.â
You reach for her.
âIâm sorry, sweetheart. Mamaâs sorry.â
That only makes her cry.
You finish changing her as quickly as possible, murmuring apologies while she squirms and kicks. By the time you manage to fasten her clothes, tears have gathered in your own eyes.
It is ridiculous.
You know it is.
Babies cry. Parents become frustrated. One impatient word does not make you a terrible mother.
You know all of that.
But knowing something and feeling it are rarely the same thing.
You lift Ophelia into your arms.
She turns toward you immediately, pressing her damp cheek against your collarbone.
You hold her close.
âIâm sorry.â
Her cries begin to quiet.
Your own do not.
Because underneath the guilt about snapping at her, there is something else.
Something older.
Something you recognise now, even when it arrives wearing a different face.
You missed the first two weeks.
You have spent every day since trying to make sure you never fail her again.
It is impossible.
Nobody can be patient every second. Nobody can respond perfectly to every cry, every tantrum, every sleepless night.
But part of you still believes you owe Ophelia perfection.
As if being good enough now could somehow make up for not being there at the beginning.
You carry her into the bathroom because it is the nearest room with a door.
Then you lower yourself onto the floor beside the bath, Ophelia sitting across your lap.
The tiles are cold beneath your legs.
She has stopped crying.
Now she is playing with the drawstring on your sweatshirt, completely recovered from the worst moment of her morning.
You wish you could do the same.
âI donât know what Iâm doing,â you whisper.
Ophelia chews thoughtfully on the end of the string.
You take it away before she can swallow half of it.
She protests with a small sound.
âI know. Your life is very difficult.â
She reaches for it again.
You move it behind your shoulder.
Her brows pull together.
The expression is so similar to Loganâs that a watery laugh escapes you.
âYou look exactly like your dad when you do that.â
Ophelia stares at you.
You gently smooth the curl above her ear.
âHeâll tell you that you look like him all the time. Donât believe him. Most of it is wishful thinking.â
She leans into your hand.
Your throat tightens.
âI love you.â
The words come easily.
They always do with her.
âI love you so much.â
Her hand lifts.
Clumsy fingers brush your chin before catching in the collar of your sweatshirt.
You smile faintly.
âI just wish loving you made me better at this.â
Opheliaâs mouth opens.
She makes a soft sound.
You barely notice it.
She has been babbling constantly since learning Dada, producing long strings of noises that Logan insists are advanced conversations.
You wipe beneath your eyes with the heel of your hand.
âIâm trying.â
Another sound.
âMam.â
You go still.
Ophelia looks directly at you.
Her hand is still gripping your sweatshirt.
âMama.â
For a second, you genuinely believe you imagined it.
Your breathing stops.
The room seems to narrow around her.
âWhat?â
Ophelia bounces slightly on your lap.
âMama.â
The word is imperfect.
Soft around the edges.
But clear.
Undeniable.
Your hand flies to your mouth.
âOh.â
Fresh tears spill down your cheeks.
Ophelia watches them with quiet interest.
âYou said Mama.â
She smiles.
Not because she understands the significance of what she has done.
Because you are smiling now.
Because your face has changed.
âMama,â she says again.
The sob that breaks out of you is half laughter.
Half something else.
Something too large and complicated to name.
You pull her against you.
Not tightly enough to frighten her.
Just close.
Her body settles naturally against yours, one hand patting at your shoulder while you press your face into her soft hair.
âIâm here.â
The words leave before you think about them.
Not I love you.
Not You said Mama.
Onlyâ
âIâm here.â
Because some part of you is still speaking to the newborn you never got to hold while she was new.
To the baby who learned Loganâs heartbeat while yours remained on a monitor down the hall.
To the little girl you feared might never know you.
âIâm here, sweetheart.â
Ophelia squirms, already bored with being held still.
You laugh and loosen your arms.
She looks up at you.
âMama.â
You cry harder.
Which she finds hilarious.
Her gummy smile appears, followed by the beginning of a laugh, and suddenly both of you are making too much noise on the bathroom floor.
That is how Logan finds you twenty minutes later.
He comes home earlier than expected.
You hear the front door open, then the scrape of his hockey bag against the wall.
âHello?â
You do not answer quickly enough.
His footsteps move through the house.
Faster when he realises you are not in the living room.
âY/N?â
There is concern in his voice now.
You call back before he can panic properly.
âIn here.â
Logan appears in the bathroom doorway, still wearing his training clothes, his hair damp at the temples.
He stops when he sees you.
You are sitting on the floor.
Your face is wet from crying.
Ophelia is on your lap, happily attempting to pull a packet of wipes from the shelf beside you.
Loganâs entire body tenses.
âWhat happened?â
You laugh shakily.
âNothing.â
He does not believe you.
Obviously.
He steps into the room and crouches in front of you.
His eyes move over your face, searching for something wrong.
âYouâre crying.â
âI know.â
âDid you fall?â
âNo.â
âAre you hurt?â
âNo.â
âDid something happen with Ophelia?â
âShe said Mama.â
Logan stops.
The fear leaves his face so quickly it almost makes you laugh again.
âWhat?â
You look down at your daughter.
âShe said Mama.â
His eyes widen.
Ophelia has finally managed to grab the wipes. She pulls one free with tremendous satisfaction.
Logan looks between the two of you.
âDid she really?â
âYes.â
A smile spreads across his face.
Not the competitive expression you expected.
Not even a trace of the smugness he carried for two full weeks after Dada.
Only joy.
Immediate and uncomplicated.
âOh, baby.â
You are not sure which of you he means.
Maybe both.
He lowers himself fully onto the floor beside you, knees bent awkwardly in the small space.
Ophelia waves the wipe.
Logan reaches over and gently takes it before she can put it in her mouth.
She frowns at him.
âMama,â she complains.
You laugh.
Loganâs head snaps toward her.
His mouth falls open.
âShe did.â
âI told you.â
âShe said it to you.â
There is so much emotion in his voice that your chest aches.
Ophelia reaches for the wipe again.
Logan gives it back, too overwhelmed to maintain any kind of parental boundary.
She immediately puts it against her face.
You take it away.
âThank you, Daddy. Very helpful.â
He does not react to the sarcasm.
He is staring at you.
At the tears still drying on your cheeks.
At the way Ophelia leans into your side without even thinking about it.
Something changes in his expression.
âWhat happened before she said it?â
You look away.
Of course he would ask.
He knows you too well to believe you have been sitting in the bathroom crying from happiness for twenty minutes.
âIt was nothing.â
Logan waits.
You sigh.
âI got frustrated with her.â
His eyebrows lift slightly.
âShe wouldnât stay still while I was changing her, and I snapped.â
âWhat did you say?â
âHer name.â
He blinks.
âHer name?â
âSharply.â
Logan looks at Ophelia.
She is now trying to remove one of his shoelaces.
Then he looks back at you.
âYou said her name sharply?â
âYes.â
âAnd thatâs why youâre crying on the bathroom floor?â
âWhen you say it like that, it sounds stupid.â
âIt doesnât sound stupid.â
His tone is gentle, but there is the beginning of a smile around his mouth.
You narrow your eyes.
âDo not laugh.â
âIâm not.â
âYou are very close.â
âIâm thinking.â
âThat is never reassuring.â
He reaches for your hand.
His fingers weave through yours, resting across Opheliaâs legs.
âYou know Iâve snapped before.â
You look at him.
âWhen?â
âLast week.â
âAbout what?â
âShe tried to grab the bottle while I was pouring water into it.â
âWhat did you say?â
âI said, âOphelia, no,â in a tone Iâm not proud of.â
You stare at him.
âThatâs all?â
âShe looked betrayed.â
Despite yourself, you laugh.
Loganâs smile grows.
âI spent ten minutes apologising. She spent those same ten minutes trying to eat my watch.â
Your shoulders loosen a little.
âShe cried when I snapped.â
âShe cries when the bath ends.â
âThatâs different.â
âShe cried yesterday because I wouldnât let her lick the bottom of my shoe.â
You make a face.
âWhen did that happen?â
âYou were making lunch.â
âWhy didnât you tell me?â
âI was protecting her reputation.â
You laugh again.
The heaviness inside your chest does not disappear.
But it shifts.
Makes room for something else.
Logan squeezes your hand.
âYou are allowed to get frustrated.â
âI know.â
âYou are allowed to have bad mornings.â
âI know.â
âYou donât have to be perfect.â
That one is harder.
Your gaze drops to Ophelia.
She has abandoned Loganâs shoelace and is now tracing one finger over the back of your hand.
âI missed so much.â
Logan goes quiet.
He understands immediately.
You hate that you are still saying it.
That the same wound continues opening in different places.
But he never makes you feel like you should be over it.
âI feel like I have to get everything else right.â
Logan leans closer.
âYou could get everything right for the rest of her life, and it wouldnât give you those two weeks back.â
The words hurt.
Because they are true.
Your eyes fill again.
He continues before you can retreat into the pain.
âBut you donât have to earn your place with her.â
His thumb moves across your knuckles.
âYou never did.â
You swallow.
âShe called you Mama while you were crying on a bathroom floor after losing your patience.â
A small smile pulls at his mouth.
âI think thatâs pretty strong evidence she isnât expecting perfection.â
You look down at Ophelia.
As if feeling your attention, she looks up.
âMama.â
It happens so casually this time.
Like the word already belongs to you.
Like it has always belonged to you.
You press your lips together, trying to keep yourself from falling apart again.
Logan is less successful.
A tear slips down his cheek.
You turn toward him.
âAre you crying?â
âNo.â
âJohn.â
âShe said Mama.â
âYou were unbearable when she said Dada.â
âI was proud.â
âYou told the postman.â
âHe asked how my day was.â
âYou told a complete stranger in the grocery store.â
âShe had a baby. I thought sheâd understand.â
âYou changed your phone background to a picture of yourself with the word Dada underneath it.â
âThat was Dean.â
âYou kept it for a week.â
âIt was a good edit.â
You smile.
Logan smiles back.
Ophelia pats your knee.
âMama.â
Logan looks at her.
Then points to himself.
âDada.â
She stares at him.
âMama.â
You burst out laughing.
Loganâs face falls.
âExcuse me?â
Ophelia slaps one hand against your leg.
âMama.â
You laugh harder.
âOh, this is interesting.â
âShe knows Dada.â
âApparently she has moved on.â
âShe has not moved on.â
âSounds like she has.â
Logan leans closer to her.
âDada.â
Ophelia looks directly into his eyes.
Then says, with great confidenceâ
âMama.â
The look on Loganâs face is so offended that you nearly drop your head against the wall laughing.
âYou spent two weeks being insufferable,â you remind him.
âThatâs unrelated.â
âIt feels very related.â
âSheâs confused.â
âShe seems certain.â
Ophelia reaches for you.
You lift her against your chest, still laughing while she curls one fist into your shirt.
Logan watches.
The pretend offence fades after only a few seconds.
His eyes soften.
There it is again.
That look he gets whenever he sees the two of you together.
As though he is still surprised the picture exists outside his imagination.
He shifts closer and places one hand against Opheliaâs back.
His other arm settles around your waist.
You lean into him.
The three of you sit together on the bathroom floor, surrounded by discarded wipes and one abandoned sock you have no memory of removing.
It is not a beautiful setting.
There is toothpaste on the edge of the sink.
A damp towel has been left in a pile near the bath.
Logan smells faintly of sweat and cold air from the rink.
Ophelia has probably filled her nappy again.
None of it matters.
âMama,â she says into your sweatshirt.
The word is muffled now.
Sleepy.
Still yours.
You close your eyes.
Logan kisses your temple.
âTold you she knew you.â
You think about the first time he said it.
In the therapistâs office, his hand wrapped around yours while he told you how he played recordings of your voice.
How Ophelia had quieted when she heard you.
How she knew you before you ever opened your eyes.
At the time, you wanted to believe him.
You think part of you did.
Today, you finally feel it.
Not because Ophelia has said a particular word.
Because she reaches for you when she is tired.
Because she looks for you when she hears your voice.
Because when you lose your patience, she forgives you without needing an explanation.
Because you are not a stranger who arrived two weeks late.
You are her mother.
You always were.
You rest your cheek against the top of her head.
âI heard her first, by the way.â
Logan pulls back.
âWhat?â
âYou heard Dada first. I heard Mama first.â
His eyes narrow.
âThatâs not a competition.â
You smile sweetly.
âThat sounds like something people only say when they lose.â
He stares at you.
You stare back.
Then Logan laughs.
A proper laugh.
Warm and tired and full.
Ophelia lifts her head at the sound.
For one hopeful second, Logan points to himself.
âDada?â
Ophelia blinks at him.
Then buries her face back against you.
âMama.â
You spend the rest of the day reminding him about it.
Naturally.
Tiny Librarian {John Logan x reader} Part 38
Masterlist
Summary: You were stranded at the library in the pouring rain, the last shuttle bus had left just as you got there, you text your brother, Garrett Graham, if he could pick you up after practice. You'll never guess who he sends instead.
Warnings: Police, concealed anger, silent panic
The officer asked you to come in that afternoon.
You agreed before you had time to talk yourself out of it.
The second the call ended, the kitchen went quiet.
Logan was still sitting beside you, one forearm resting against the table, watching your face carefully. Garrett stood across from you with his hands braced against the back of a chair. Neither of them spoke first.
You stared at the new phone in your hand.
âThey want another statement.â
Garrettâs jaw tightened. âDid they say why?â
âThey traced the account the information was being sent to.â
Loganâs posture changed slightly. It was barely noticeable, but you felt it beside youâthe way his shoulders stiffened, the way his fingers curled against his palm.
âTo Ryan?â he asked.
You nodded.
âThey said the email address is linked to him. Theyâre still confirming everything, butâŚâ You swallowed. âThey think they have enough to formally question him.â
Garrett let out a sharp breath through his nose.
It wasnât quite a laugh.
It definitely wasnât relief.
âGood.â
The word came out hard.
You looked up at him.
He immediately caught your expression and softened his voice.
âSorry.â
âYou donât have to apologise every time youâre angry.â
âIâm working on knowing when the anger is useful.â
There was something tired in his face when he said it. He had always been protective, but lately his protectiveness seemed to sit under his skin like a constant fever. It made him restless. It made him pace. It made him check the locks twice before bed.
You understood it more than you wanted to.
You were doing the same thing in quieter ways.
Logan reached for his keys.
âIâll drive.â
Garrettâs eyes moved to him. âIâm coming.â
You took a breath.
Both of them looked at you.
âI want you both there.â
Garrettâs shoulders loosened.
Not much.
Enough.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The police station felt less frightening the second time.
You still disliked the bright lights and the smell of stale coffee. You still hated how every door seemed to lock behind you. But you knew the route to the interview room now. You recognised the officer who met you at reception.
Familiarity didnât make it pleasant.
It made it manageable.
Garrett and Logan waited outside while you gave your statement.
That had been your choice.
The officer asked you to describe when Ryan had access to your phone. You told him about the times he borrowed it. The evening he kept it while you showered. The arguments whenever you changed your passcode. The way he would sometimes know where you had been before you told him.
At the time, you had assumed he was guessing.
Or checking your social media.
Or hearing things through mutual friends.
Now every memory felt different.
Darker.
âDid he ever refer to conversations you hadnât had with him?â the officer asked.
You looked down at your hands.
âYes.â
âHow often?â
âI donât know.â
The officer waited.
You forced yourself to think.
âHe used to bring things up when we argued. Stuff Iâd said to Garrett. Things Iâd only told my therapist.â
The officerâs pen paused.
âAre you certain you hadnât told Ryan those things yourself?â
The question wasnât cruel.
It still made your stomach turn.
âIâm certain.â
He nodded and continued writing.
You stared at the edge of the desk.
âThere was one time I told Garrett I was thinking about leaving.â
Your voice sounded distant in the small room.
âWe spoke on the phone while Ryan was at practice.â
âWhat happened afterwards?â
âHe came to my dorm that night.â
The memory returned with uncomfortable clarity.
Ryan standing in your doorway.
Ryan asking whether you had something to tell him.
Ryan smiling when you denied it, as though he already knew you were lying.
âHe asked if I was planning to leave him.â
The officer looked up.
âAnd you hadnât told him?â
âNo.â
Your hands had started shaking.
You pressed them flat against your legs.
âI thought Garrett had said something.â
âDid you ask your brother?â
You nodded.
âHe swore he hadnât.â
The officerâs expression remained professional, but something shifted behind it.
Concern, perhaps.
Or confirmation.
He closed the folder in front of him.
âWeâre applying for authority to examine the account and any devices associated with it. Given the repeated contact and the evidence recovered from your phone, this is now being treated as a serious harassment and stalking investigation.â
You had heard the word before.
It still made your throat tighten.
âWhat happens to Ryan?â
âHeâll be brought in for questioning. Depending on what the digital examination confirms, further action may follow.â
âWill he know I gave another statement?â
âHe will know an investigation is ongoing.â
Your pulse quickened.
The officer noticed.
âWeâll review your safety plan before you leave.â
You hated that phrase.
Safety plan.
It sounded so calm.
So organised.
As though fear could be contained inside bullet points.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Logan stood the moment you came out.
He had been sitting beside Garrett in the corridor, but the space between them suggested neither had spoken much.
âHow did it go?â Logan asked.
You opened your mouth.
Nothing came out.
His face softened.
âBad question.â
You shook your head. âNo, itâs okay.â
Garrett moved closer, stopping before he reached you.
You appreciated that both of them had learned to stop.
To wait.
To let you close the distance.
âTheyâre questioning him,â you said.
Garrettâs expression hardened.
âWhen?â
âSoon. Maybe today.â
âGood.â
This time, you didnât flinch.
You simply looked at him.
Garrett dragged a hand over his face.
âI know it doesnât fix anything.â
âNo.â
âBut I still want him to be scared.â
The honesty of it sat between you.
You understood.
Part of you wanted that too.
You wanted Ryan to feel a fraction of the uncertainty he had put inside you. You wanted him to sit in a room with no control over what happened next. You wanted someone to ask him questions he couldnât twist his way out of.
The thought made you uncomfortable.
It also made you feel human.
Logan watched your expression.
âWhat are you thinking?â
You glanced towards the closed interview-room door.
âI hope heâs scared.â
Garrettâs face softened.
Logan didnât look shocked.
âYouâre allowed to hope that,â he said.
You looked at him. âThat sounds horrible.â
âNo. It sounds honest.â
He reached out, stopping his hand a few inches from yours.
You took it.
His fingers closed around you gently.
âYou donât have to be endlessly kind to someone who hurt you.â
Something about the sentence loosened the shame in your chest.
Not all of it.
Enough.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The three of you stopped at a diner on the way back to campus.
Garrett insisted you needed to eat.
Logan pointed out that Garrett had consumed nothing except coffee since breakfast.
Garrett told him to mind his own business.
You ordered fries and a milkshake because they were the only things that sounded tolerable.
For the first ten minutes, nobody discussed Ryan.
Garrett complained about practice.
Logan made fun of the way Dean taped his stick.
You listened without contributing much, but the ordinary conversation helped. Their voices filled the space without asking anything from you.
Then Garrettâs phone rang.
He looked down at the screen.
His expression changed.
âWhat?â you asked.
âItâs campus security.â
Your appetite disappeared.
Garrett answered and put the call on speaker only after you nodded.
The security officer spoke quickly. Ryan had been removed from campus pending the outcome of the police investigation. His access card had been deactivated. He had been instructed not to enter university property or contact you directly or indirectly.
You stared at the condensation sliding down the side of your glass.
âSo heâs gone?â you asked.
âFor now,â the officer replied. âPlease continue to report anything unusual. This restriction doesnât replace the ongoing police process.â
For now.
Not forever.
Not safe.
For now.
The call ended.
Garrett leaned back in the booth.
âHeâs off campus.â
You nodded.
Logan studied you.
âYou donât look relieved.â
âI am.â
You searched for the right words.
âI think.â
Neither of them rushed to answer.
You looked around the diner. At the waitress refilling coffee. At the couple arguing quietly over a map. At the child in the next booth drawing circles in spilled sugar.
Everything was ordinary.
You felt disconnected from all of it.
âI thought Iâd feel different.â
Loganâs hand moved across the table.
You met him halfway.
âIt might take a while for your body to believe it,â he said.
You smiled faintly. âYouâve been reading.â
âDean sent me articles.â
Garrett looked offended. âDean?â
âHe has hidden depths.â
âHe owns a silk dressing gown with his initials on it.â
âPeople contain multitudes.â
A laugh escaped you.
Small and unexpected.
Garrett stared for a second, then smiled too.
The relief in his face made your chest hurt.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That night, you decided to sleep in your dorm.
You didnât announce it dramatically. You simply stood outside the hockey house with Logan and told him you wanted to try.
He nodded.
âOkay.â
No disappointment.
No argument.
Garrett opened his mouth.
You looked at him.
He closed it again.
âI was going to say something supportive.â
âWere you?â
âNo.â
You hugged him before he could pretend he wasnât worried.
âIâll call.â
âYouâd better.â
âI will.â
Garrett held you for a second longer than usual, then let go.
Logan drove you across campus.
When he parked outside your building, neither of you moved immediately.
âYou sure?â he asked.
You looked up at the dark windows of your dorm.
âNo.â
He nodded as though that answer made perfect sense.
âBut I still want to.â
âThat makes sense too.â
You turned towards him.
âCan you stay until I fall asleep?â
âOn the phone?â
You nodded.
âOf course.â
He walked you to your door but didnât come inside.
That mattered.
You needed to prove to yourself that the room still belonged to you.
Logan kissed your forehead and waited in the hallway until you locked the door.
Then you heard his footsteps retreat.
Your room felt strange.
Too quiet.
You checked beneath the bed even though you knew nobody was there. You opened the wardrobe. Checked the window latch. Looked at the smoke detector for longer than necessary.
Then you stopped.
Ryan was off campus.
The old phone was with the police.
The new phone had been checked.
The door was locked.
You were alone because you had chosen to be.
That was different from being abandoned.
You changed into pyjamas and climbed beneath the covers.
Then you called Logan.
He answered immediately.
âHowâs the fortress?â
You smiled into the dark.
âSecure.â
âWardrobe checked?â
âYes.â
âUnder the bed?â
âYes.â
âAny monsters?â
âOne sock.â
âHostile?â
âExtremely.â
âWant me to come deal with it?â
You laughed quietly.
âNo. I think I can handle it.â
There was a pause.
Not awkward.
Comfortable.
âGood,â Logan said softly.
You placed the phone beside your pillow.
âYou donât have to talk.â
âI know.â
âI just want to hear you there.â
âIâm here.â
You closed your eyes.
For a while, you listened to him moving around his room. The scrape of a drawer opening. The rustle of clothes. Water running briefly in the bathroom.
Ordinary sounds.
His life continuing on the other end of the phone.
After several minutes, he spoke.
âYou still awake?â
âBarely.â
âWant a story?â
You smiled. âWhat kind?â
âThe tragic tale of Tucker attempting to fix the washing machine.â
âThat does sound tragic.â
âHe flooded the basement.â
âHe did not.â
âHe absolutely did.â
Logan told the story badly.
He exaggerated every detail. Gave Tucker an accent he didnât have. Claimed Dean had attempted to save the laundry with a hockey stick.
You knew most of it was nonsense.
You didnât care.
Your breathing slowed as he talked.
The room stopped feeling so exposed.
Just before sleep took you, you whispered his name.
âYeah?â
âI did it.â
His voice softened.
âYeah, you did.â
âIâm alone.â
âYou are.â
âAnd Iâm okay.â
There was a small pause.
âYou are.â
Pride warmed his voice, but he didnât make it bigger than it was.
He understood that tonight wasnât a victory over fear.
It was simply one night in your own bed.
One locked door.
One choice you had made for yourself.
âGoodnight, Logan.â
âGoodnight.â
âYou can hang up when I fall asleep.â
âI know.â
The line remained open.
Long after your breathing evened out.
Long after you stopped responding.
Logan stayed there, listening to the quiet, until he was certain you were sleeping.
Not because you couldnât survive the night without him.
Because you had asked him to stay.
And there was a difference.
Quietly Yours {Dean Di Laurentis x mute!reader} Part 5
Masterlist
Summary: Everyone at Briar knows Dean Di Laurentis. Nobody knows you. Not because you aren't friendly, but because people tend to make assumptions the moment they realize you don't speak. Some think you're shy. Others think you're rude. A few even assume you're deaf. You're used to correcting people with a tired smile and a note on your phone. Dean is no different...at first. Until he realizes your silence never stopped you from laughing, teasing, arguing, or caring. He starts discovering that you've always had a voice. It just isn't spoken.
Warnings: mentions of being mute, misunderstandings
By October, seeing Dean Di Laurentis walking around campus with you had stopped surprising people.
He'd meet you after lectures.
Walk you to the library.
Bring you coffee more often than either of you cared to admit.
Some days you barely exchanged ten wordsâspoken or typed.
Other days your phone battery suffered because Dean somehow managed to make you type paragraph-long responses to his endless questions.
He liked hearing what you thought.
Not because your answers were written.
Because they were always honest.
Dean had just finished practice when he spotted you sitting on the bleachers.
You always came a little early on Wednesdays.
The rink wasn't quietânot with hockey pucks ricocheting off the boards and skates carving across the iceâbut it was one of the few places Dean knew you'd never feel left out.
Everyone wore helmets.
Everyone relied on hand signals.
Communication wasn't just verbal.
He skated over to the glass, helmet tucked beneath one arm.
You looked up from your novel.
Dean knocked twice on the glass.
Your eyes lifted.
He grinned.
Then, with exaggerated concentration, he signedâ
Hello.
You smiled.
Then signed back.
Hello.
He pointed to himself.
Very slowly.
How... are... you?
His brows furrowed in concentration.
You couldn't help smiling wider.
His grammar was a little clunky.
His movements still stiff.
But he'd clearly been practising.
You answered with slower signs so he could follow.
I'm good.
Dean managed to understand two of the three signs.
His face lit up anyway.
"I understood that!"
Coach blew his whistle from the other end of the rink.
"Di Laurentis!"
Dean winced.
"Coming!"
He pointed between his eyes and then at you.
"I'll be back."
The sign wasn't perfect.
But you understood exactly what he meant.
Practice finished nearly an hour later.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dean emerged from the locker room with damp hair and a hoodie pulled over his practice clothes.
"You waited."
You shrugged.
Your phone appeared in your hands.
I was reading.
"Still."
He smiled to himself.
"You waited."
You rolled your eyes, but there wasn't much conviction behind it.
As the two of you walked across campus, Dean hesitated.
"So..."
You looked at him.
"The guys are having everyone over tonight."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Movie night."
You raised an eyebrow.
Dean laughed.
"Okay... pizza, movie, Logan complaining about the movie, Garrett pretending he doesn't care, and Tucker cooking because apparently frozen pizza isn't good enough."
A small smile appeared on your lips.
"I wanted to ask if..."
He suddenly looked oddly nervous.
"...if you'd come."
You stopped walking.
Dean immediately panicked.
"You absolutely don't have to."
"I know parties aren't really your thing."
"This isn't a party."
"It's just us."
He realised he was rambling and shut his mouth.
You looked at him for a long moment before typing.
Will there be lots of people?
Dean shook his head.
"Just me."
He pointed on one finger.
"Garrett."
Another.
"Logan."
"Tucker."
"Hannah."
"Maybe Allie."
He smiled gently.
"If it gets too much, I'll take you home."
No pressure.
No guilt.
Just an easy way out if you needed it.
You appreciated that.
More than he realised.
Your thumbs moved.
Okay.
Dean blinked.
"Okay?"
You nodded.
His grin was instant.
"Seriously?"
Another nod.
He actually pumped his fist in the air.
"Yes!"
Several students walking past stared at him.
Dean didn't seem to notice.
You laughed silently, covering your mouth.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The hockey house was exactly what you'd expected.
Loud.
Not chaotic.
Just...
Lived in.
A hockey stick leaned against one wall.
Someone had abandoned trainers in the hallway.
The unmistakable smell of garlic and something baking drifted from the kitchen.
Dean opened the front door dramatically.
"Welcome to my humble abode."
You looked around before typing.
You live like this voluntarily?
Dean looked offended.
"This place has character."
You glanced at a sock hanging from the banister.
Then back at him.
One eyebrow lifted.
"...I'll admit the sock isn't helping my argument."
"Dean!" Tucker called from the kitchen.
"Did you remember the drinks?"
"Iâ"
Dean froze.
"...Forgot."
Tucker sighed dramatically.
"I specifically texted you."
Dean pointed towards you.
"I was distracted."
Tucker appeared in the doorway.
His eyes landed on you.
A warm smile spread across his face.
"You must be Y/N."
You nodded.
He wiped his hands on a tea towel before signingâ
Hello.
Your eyes widened.
The sign wasn't perfect.
Not nearly as polished as someone fluent.
But recognisable.
You smiled immediately and signed hello back.
Dean stared.
"You know sign language?"
Tucker shrugged.
"My cousin's Deaf."
Dean looked genuinely impressed.
"Huh."
"You didn't know that?"
"No."
"You've never asked."
Dean laughed.
"Fair."
One by one, the others filtered into the kitchen.
Garrett greeted you with an easy smile.
"Good to finally meet you properly."
You typed a quick reply.
You too.
Logan wandered in carrying two bowls of popcorn.
"So..."
He looked between you and Dean.
"This is the mysterious library girl."
Dean nearly dropped the bottle of soda he was holding.
"You're impossible."
Logan smirked.
"I've heard a lot about you."
Dean whipped around.
"I have not talked about her that much."
Garrett and Tucker exchanged a look.
Neither of them said anything.
They didn't have to.
Logan grinned wider.
"Dude."
He folded his arms.
"You've mentioned her every single day for the past three weeks."
Dean opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Opened it again.
"I..."
Nothing came out.
For possibly the first time in his life...
Dean Di Laurentis was speechless.
You looked from Dean to Logan.
Then slowly reached for your phone.
A few seconds later, you held the screen up in front of Dean.
Looks like you do all the talking after all.
The kitchen fell silent for exactly one beat.
Then Garrett burst out laughing.
Tucker nearly doubled over.
Even Hannah, who had just walked through the front door, covered her mouth to hide a smile.
Dean groaned, dragging both hands down his face.
"I walked right into that one."
You laughed so hard your shoulders shook.
Dean watched you for a moment, smiling despite himself.
If embarrassing himself was the price of seeing you laugh like that...
He'd happily pay it every day.
