Shanghai : βParis of the Eastβ
ηθδ½ εδΎ (Waiting For Your Return/Dengzhe ni huilai) is a classic Chinese song, sung in Mandarin, by Bai Guang, one of the popular singers in old Shanghai (1930s-40s). Shanghai back then was known as the βParis of the Eastβ because of its buzzing cultural scene. Kinda jazzy and Western-style but with a distinctly Chinese feel)
In 1935, Du Yue Sheng, the notorious boss of Shanghaiβs Green Gang, ordered into creation βThe Clear Wind Dance Bandβ, the first all-Chinese jazz group, to perform at the Yangtze River Dance Hall. He tasked Li Jinhui to put the group together. Li considered himself a nationalist and educator β he promoted the idea of a national language, contributed to reforms in education and was a prolific composer of patriotic songs (indeed his student Nie Er wrote the current National Anthem).
