Robert listened silently, his arms crossed coldly over his chest in what may have just been an attempt to keep the heartbreak at bay. He couldn’t even be hurt by the remark, because Craig was right. Robert wasn’t sure that he would call his existence living, but it was certainly his remedy of choice. But he already knew that he was a shit human being, with terrible habits, who made worse choices. Seeing Craig - beautiful, brilliant Craig - in a position that was all too familiar to him was a lower blow than anything anyone could say to him.
He tried not to let it show that it bothered him, because Craig was already drowning in enough self-pity. Robert’s didn’t need to be the icing on the moldy cake. “And I fucked up Marilyn. And Val. And you. Ashley fucked you up. The president fucks up America. It’s just what happens; humans were made to have the capacity for shit things.” It was… oddly profound for his still drunken state. Far too wise and not at all reassuring, Robert assumed. “We just gotta get off our asses and fix shit. Besides, I’m sure Smashley knows it’s all my fault.” He smirked, a dry laugh pulling from his lips as he thought of Mary and Joseph. “Not the first time I’ve ruined a marriage.”
“You say some weird things, bro..” He laughed at first, but he wasn’t wrong. Everybody did fuck up. But Craig? No. Craig since college was a Perfect ManTM. He couldn’t fuck up, there was so much riding on his shoulders. “It’s not you, it’s me..”
Craig’s voice was immediate as he tried to sit up- Nope, big mistake, the whole world was spinning at that point. Time to lie back down. He flopped and whined, rubbing at his eyes with the heel of his hands.
“I.. I went to her because I thought.. I thought that was what we needed. We fought, I left, and you were mad.” This wasn’t the best time to explain things, Craig, but here he was anyway, word vomit happening.
“I thought that you’d be happier away from me, so I went back to Ashley, she knew me, she was.. all I had, but then we continued talking. We got.. back to the way we were, but it was too late with Ashley, we were so far already, bro, and--” He took a shaky breath. Fuck, there were the tears that he couldn’t shed earlier. Deep rbeaths, Craig.
