โ "Done breaking the floor yet?...", Jax shot Caine a sideways glance from beneath his brow, watching the nervous twitches that kept running through his body.
โ "Mmh..." Caine answered with a quiet, almost offended hum, struggling to bring his hands back under control.
In the last fifteen minutes, they'd managed to go through the same miserable cycle twice. Both of them were panicking, neither understanding why they'd been left alone together or what had happened to everyone else.
The giant remained on his knees, fidgeting as one of his lower hands traced circles across the stone floor. A chain dragged behind it, clinking with every movement and making Jax's ears droop.
The rabbit leaned against the side of a broken stone block, still sitting in the exact same spot where everyone else had disappeared.
"...That sadistic piece of code" ,Jax muttered, resting his forehead on his folded knees. "That self-proclaimed lord of statistics just keeps forcing everyone into the one situation they hate most."
He glanced toward Caine. He was afraid of him.
After everything he'd witnessedโhow easily Abel could get inside his headโCaine's monstrous size and fragile state of mind made the thought of future "experiments" far more terrifying.
Caine let out another muffled sound and pulled his upper arms even closer to himself, as if physically restraining them from another anxious twitch. For several long seconds, the only sound was the chains.
"If Abel wanted them dead, he wouldn't be putting on this whole damn show..." Jax muttered, staring down at the floor.
Silence settled between them again. Caine slowly dragged his fingers across the stone, obviously trying to explain something. He pointed at himself... then somewhere into the empty darkness... then spread all six hands apart.
โ "I-i... have absolutely no idea what you just said."
Jax looked over with the same detached, yet strangely curious expression. His narrowed square pupils stared into nothing in particular as he shrugged.
Caine's hands froze? then, with a defeated sigh, they slowly dropped.
โ "Hey... don't look at me like that."
The giant turned his head toward him.
โ "Yeah, I know you can't actually look."
Jax buried his face in his hands, dragging the "skin" of his cheeks downward.
"Gooooooood... how much longer is this gonna last..."? the words came out muffled, somewhere between a groan and a frustrated growl.
Caine lowered himself even further. His lower arms supported his weight while one of his upper hands slowly reached forward, palm facing upward. An unmistakable invitation.
Jax stared at it. He saw absolutely no reason to move.
โ "F-for what?โ Afraid I'll run awayโ o-or that Abel's gonna kidnap me?"? his voice caught for a split second as he forced the sarcasm to stay intact.
The truth was, he refused to make himself vulnerable. Not emotionally... and definitely not physically. He'd already imagined a hundred different ways this could end the moment he let his guard down.
Caine's pleading hum dropped lower, firmer this time. He stretched out his second hand as well, cupping both palms together.
A silent plea.
"Jax... please... just do it.", Caine tilted his head slightly to the left, as though trying to look upward.
He was checking. Abel had to be watching them. And if Jax refused to approach on his own...
...the overseer might decide to use harsher methods.
Jax stayed exactly where he was. One eyebrow slowly crept upward.
โ "Seriously?"
Caine's hands remained stubbornly cupped together.
โ "No."
The giant visibly deflated, but he kept waiting.
โ "No. No, and absolutely not.", Jax shook his head with a strained, almost hysterical grin.
He pointed toward the enormous hands.
โ "I already know how your brilliant little 'come here' ideas end.", leaning back against the stone again, he folded his arms.
Caine flinched. His upper right hand immediately pressed against his chest. He wanted to argue, he couldn't.
โ "Yeah. Exactly.", Jax looked away, โ "No hands."
Caine didn't lower them. And somehow, that was the most irritating part. He wasn't insisting, ัe wasn't reaching for him, he wasn't trying to force anything, he was just... waiting.
โ "Oh, for God's sake...", Jax rolled his eyes.
โ "Do you have any idea... h-how creepy this is?!", his voice was laced with exhausted, feverish sarcasm, desperately clinging to laughter.
Caine answered with a quiet, guilty hum, Jax let out a long sigh.
โ "Stop doing that."
Caine tilted his head in confusion.
โ "That.", Jax waved vaguely toward him, โ "Y-you're making me feel like... l-like I just kicked a stray puppy."
Silence settled over them again. Caine kept holding out his hands. After another long moment, his shoulders slowly sagged. He didn't dare move any closer, Jax could run ะพr hide, ะตither would be effortless.
Caine had already begun lowering his hands when he suddenly jerked backward, his fists clenching as he instinctively dropped into a defensive posture.
Jax actually flinched.
โ "H-Hey-hey-heyโ okay... terrible comparison.", ัe immediately threw both hands up, โ "That's not what I meant!!"
โ "Mmmmmhh!" Caine muffled something through the muzzle, gesturing frantically.
His fists relaxed, ะพne upper hand pointed upward.
Jax frowned, โ "...You think he's watching us?"
Caine nodded. Fast, ะฐlmost desperately. Like he'd been waiting for someone to understand. Jax opened his mouth, ready to dismiss it as paranoia.
The chain snapped taut
A deafening screech of strained metal ripped through the silence. The collar yanked Caine backward so violently that he lost his balance instantly. His lower hands slammed into the stone floor, claws scraping across the surface.
Metal rang out as the chain pulled tighter and tighter. The links visibly trembled. A muffled, choking cry of pain escaped from behind the heavy muzzle.
โ "HOLY SHIT!", Jax shot to his feet, stumbling backward as his heart lurched into his throat.
Another violent jerk. The chain around Caine's neck tightened until it hummed like a drawn guitar string. He instinctively grabbed at it with his upper hands, desperately trying to relieve the crushing pressure.
At the same moment, the shackles around his lower arms sprang to life. The giant's massive body was dragged mercilessly across the ground, forcing him onto his back in an awkward, helpless fall.
โ "Heyโ!!", The shout escaped Jax before he even realized he'd spoken.
โ "HEY!!!!". the thunderous crash of rattling chains echoed throughout the abyss.
The seemingly endless chain disappearing into the darkness suddenly jerked upward. Caine let out a small, pitiful whimper as his body was lifted from the ground.
Jax wasn't shouting at him, ะฐnd Caine understood that.
Now the giant hung in the air at an unnatural angle, his knees barely brushing the floor. His upper arms were stretched wide apart like a grotesque crucifix. His legs dangled uselessly beneath him, the tips of his feet dragging lazily across the stone.
Caine fought back with everything he had. Every violent struggle only made it worse. The mechanisms above reacted to force.
The harder he resisted... the tighter the restraints became. The chains dug deeper, pulled harder. Threatening to tear him apart.
"You blue bastard...", Jax lunged forward, glaring into the darkness above.
โ "STOP TORTURING HIM, YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE!!"
The hoarse scream tore from his throat before he could stop it, carrying every ounce of hatred and exhaustion he had left toward the unseen overseer.
Even Caine stopped struggling. For several long seconds... everything fell silent. As though someone high above had quietly written down another observation. Another successful reaction.
For ten endless seconds, everything sank into a vacuum of silence. It felt as though, somewhere high above in the sterile darkness, someone cold and detached had simply made another note in a notebook.
The sadistic experiment had been a success. The desired reaction had been recorded.
Caine hung motionless, his chest heaving violently as he struggled to steady his ragged breathing. Every so often, his fingers twitched. Every so often, a chain gave a faint, pitiful clink as he shifted ever so slightly, trying to ease the pain.
Second by second, the tension began to ease... until, without warning, the chain went completely slack.
Caine crashed heavily onto his knees. A sharp, broken gasp burst through the muzzle as the air was knocked from his lungs. He barely managed to throw his upper hands out in front of himself before his face struck the ground. Now he remained there, head hanging low.
As if to add one final insult, the chain around his collar jerked backward once more. A muffled groan escaped him as he was dragged a short distance across the stone. Though he had no real neck to pull, one upper hand instinctively reached toward the collar while his lower arms struggled to brace against the floor.
Jax simply stood there, his mouth hung slightly open. Every trace of sarcasm had vanished. He stared at the defeated giant...
Then, as if suddenly waking from a tranceโ he deliberately looked away.
โ "Fine...", his voice came out low.
โ "...Keep acting like the victim.", the words weren't really meant for Caine. They were meant for himself.
He kicked a loose pebble. It bounced down the rocky slope, clattering against the scattered stone blocks. What irritated him most wasn't what had just happened.
It was the fact that he still had to keep interacting with this gigantic disaster. He was already about to throw out another bitter remark when something farther to his left caught his attention.
One of the stone blocks... had shifted, just slightly. Jax frowned, he looked toward it.
Nothing, the exact same landscape, ะตhe exact same silence. He stared for another few seconds, unable to shake the feeling that something had changed. Then he let out an irritated scoff and turned back.
...
Every feature of the face was frozen in a deathlike rigidity. His body froze a heartbeat later.
The empty stretch of dozens of meters between them... was gone.
Caine stood directly in front of him.
Close enough for Jax to make out every scratch across the metal braces. Close enough that one of the chains lay only a few steps away. Close enough to hear him breathing.
Jax stumbled backward.
โ "WHAT THE HELL?!"
His heart slammed into his throat, he spun around. The pile of rocks he'd been sitting on was still there in the distance.
No tracks, no signs of movement. As though the space between them had simply... ceased to exist.
Caine had barely recovered from Abel's punishment when he flinched at the shout himself. His head snapped toward Jax's voice, he looked just as confused. As if he had no idea why Jax had suddenly appeared so close.
โ "No... no, no, no...", Jax kept backing away.
Every step came with the expectation that one of those enormous hands would suddenly lunge toward him. Abel had arranged this, another experiment.
He's not under the microscope anymore.
I am.
Nothing happened. Caine remained exactly where he was. His hands hovered uncertainly in front of him, completely lost as to what he should do. Judging by the frantic movements, there was just as much panic inside his head as there was inside the purple rabbit's.
Jax glanced over his shoulder, desperately searching the empty abyss for anything that could serve as a landmarkโ then froze.
Standing alone in the middle of the endless void... was a red metal door.
As though someone had ripped it out of another world and simply planted it here. At eye level hung a small sign:
EXIT
Jax stared. His eyes darted to Caine, back to the door.
โ "...No fucking way...", his instincts screamed that it was a trap. Another one of Abel's cheap, cruel jokes. There was no way it could possibly be this easy. But his legs had already made the decision for him.
One hesitant, uneven step... another...
Then suddenlyโ he broke into a full sprint.
โ "If that's actually the exit, I swear toโ", the words died in his throat. His fingers locked around the cold metal handle. He yanked it open, the door swung wide... and Jax froze.
There was no freedom beyond it, no endless office hallways. Only a massive mirror set inside a heavy frame.
"...Seriously?" he rasped.
โ "Mmmmmmh!!!", Caine was still where he'd been.
One lower hand scraped across the floor where Jax had been standing only moments ago. He'd heard him run, he'd heard something that sounded like a door opening. Now his other hands cautiously swept through the empty space, searching for him.
Jax shot a quick glance back before instinctively tensing, already preparing to run again. From the smooth surface of the mirror... his own reflection stared back.
A battered rabbit. Like he'd been wrung out and soaked in bleach. His ears hung lifelessly against his head. Pathetic, exactly like him.
โ "Very original.",Jax forced out a bitter laugh and twisted his face into an angry sneer.
The reflection copied him perfectly, โ "Of course...", he raised a hand, ready to slam the damn door shutโ
Then, out of the corner of his eye... something glitched. The reflection blinked, a fraction of a second... after he did.
The hysterical grin that had become permanently glued to Jax's face disappeared instantly. He froze, like stone.
The reflection froze with him. For several long seconds... they simply stared at one another in complete silence. The reflection blinked again.
Jax knewโ that his own eyelids hadn't moved.
When the reflected eyes opened... the pupils were gone. In their place pulsed toxic, hypnotic neon spirals. Endlessly tightening.
Expanding. Twisting inward faster and faster. Like an infinite loading screen trapped inside a mind collapsing into madness.
Then... it smiled, slowly. Far too widely. The grin stretched almost to its ears, exposing nothing but an endless black emptiness where a mouth should have been. The double took one step forward. A wave of pure terror crashed through Jax.
He instinctively stepped back. Unable to tear his eyes away.
The figure in the mirror began falling apart. The purple silhouette trembled before splitting into cascading sheets of broken pixels.
Its long ears cracked apart with a dry snap, dissolving into a swarm of black cubes. The fingers reaching toward the glass bent at impossible angles, collapsing into jagged polygons.
Its jaw tore free... remaining suspended in midair like a violently flickering sprite. A deafening roar of white noise erupted from beyond the glass.
The creatureโ his own inevitable future. His own mental deathโ was devouring the space around it.
Reality itself cracked apart. Jax couldn't move, couldn't even breathe. The hand still gripping the handle suddenly jerked.
He ripped the door shut with all the strength he had. The metal slammed shut with a thunderous crash. Even Caine flinched.
Jax's fingers dug painfully into the handle. He stared blankly at the closed red door. Then slowly lowered his gaze to his own hand.
It was shaking, tiny, chaotic tremors. Barely noticeable digital glitches rippled across his fingers.
โ "...No.", his voice came out frighteningly quiet. Every trace of arrogance... every trace of mockery... was gone.
Behind him came the careful, heavy clink of a chain. Jax spun around so violently his neck nearly cracked. He desperately needed something real, something solid.
The giant was still there. Exactly where he'd always been. Motionless, tangible, real. Jax let out a long, ragged breath. Then a dry, broken laugh escaped him.
โ "Ohoho... noooo...", the laugh sounded fractured. Unstable, balanced on the edge of hysteria.
โ "No... no, no, no...", he dragged a trembling hand across his face, as though he could wipe the feeling away... scrape it off his skin,
โ"Not today.", his voice barely rose above a whisper.
โ"Not today...", the reflection hadn't disappeared.
It was still there. Waiting behind the door, patiently waiting... for its turn.

Helloooo!! ๐
I'm so happy I finally managed to finish this chapter!
I've been working on it for a long time. I rewrote it over and over, trying to make Jax feel as true to his character as possible while also giving Caine the attention he deserved. It was honestly one of the hardest chapters I've written, so I really hope you enjoyed it.
It's kind of funny that the most popular chapters always end up being the ones starring our fanfic's biggest celebrityโCaine. ๐ Next chapter, we'll be returning to the rest of the group.
And then... The chapter after that is going to be something huge. I've spent an absurd amount of time working on it too, and without spoiling too much... it'll feature a confrontation between two AIs. I'm genuinely excited to share it with you all.
I really, really hope you'll enjoy what's coming next. ๐
