At the end of the day, deep down inside, America believes that black children are inevitably destined to be more like OJ than Obama

I’m writing this because of a discussion I was having with my fiancee about an OJ segment we heard on the radio today. She’s almost 10 years younger than me, and doesn’t recall it. But I do. I remember when I was a kid and O.J. got off. WOOO BOY were white people mad. Hopping mad. Mad, mad. Maaaaadddd. ALL of them. Like mad for days and days and days and days. Still mad today. Think I’m exaggerating? Pfft. Just casually mention “O.J. Simpson” to a large group of white people (especially if they’re over 30) then grab some popcorn and sit back and watch what happens

Yeah, basically the entire white race — across all socioeconomic and geopolitical lines — got collectively outraged the one time a black man got away with murder by using precisely the same loaded jury tricks white people been using since 1776

Please, don’t get me wrong: I am absolutely not supporting O.J. and I’m not making light of Nicole Brown-Simpson and Ron Goldman, the people O.J. murdered (yeah, he definitely murdered them). It’s just the only time in my life that I’ve ever seen white people get anywhere near as mad as black people are about #BlackLivesMatter

I wish that white people were as unanimously outraged about the murders of Trayvon Martin, or Mike Brown, or Sandra Bland, or Tamir Rice or Laquan McDonald, or Freddie Gray, or Bettie Jones, or Eric Garner, or Quintonio LeGrier, or Aiyana Jones, or, or, or, or…and what really hurts is the fact that most of those murders were caught on film or on telephone or had multiple witnesses. But instead, what we get is a disgustingly high amount of white indifference or lukewarm equivocations asking if black people aren’t somehow responsible for their own deaths

If we could harness that same, visceral OJ like anger every time an unarmed black person is murdered in cold blood, there wouldn’t be a need for #BlackLivesMatter protests
