When we think about Ororo as not just a team leader but as a leader of people or as a ruler (Queen of Wakanda, Regent of Arakko), I think it’s important to remember that her first time being in a similar role was with the Morlocks, and that was an unmitigated failure. After winning leadership of the Morlocks, she abandons them. And it’s clear that she didn’t really want or expect to be their leader, and I would argue that there isn’t really a moral failing on her part in walking away from them. But Ororo herself perceives it as a moral failure, and her sense of having failed these people who put their trust in her as their leader is something she carries forward. I think she does believe in leadership as an act of service, as a responsibility not to be taken lightly, and that becomes part of her code of ethics due to the Mutant Massacre.
