and itâs not like there was a time howl ever thought sophie wasnât beautiful! it didnât matter whether she was cursed, or looked old and frail, or had grey hair, or had brown hair! she didnât have to have an ornate dress or makeup or anything of the sort for him to consider her beautiful. he loved her no matter what because he loved her for being who she was, for being sophie! he was so surprised when he learned that sophie didnât see herself the way he did. i think itâs funny how howl himself said, âwhatâs the point of living if youâre not beautiful?â in reference to himselfâdespite the fact he was being melodramatic, i think this shows that everyone is unconsciouslly holding themself to a standard of beauty of which we are or arenât holding others. weâre always harder on ourselves. in a similiar fashion to how howl was confused as to how sophie ever thought she wasnât pretty, sophie was surprised by how howl was acting out because his hair was dyed a different color, because it never once occured to sophie that howl wasnât beautiful. he was the epitome of pretty! and so was sophie, in howlâs eyes! it didnât matter if either of them were âprettyâ to the other, because time and time again they showed that they were in love with each other because of who they were at heart! and that they loved their friendsâwhether it was mr. turniphead, or the witch of the wasteânot because of what they looked like, but because of how kind and gentle their hearts were. all that really mattered to them was loving others because they were kind.
