Why not make our world just like the movies. Bring Ghibli home.  Learn how to cook one recipe at a time. Practice making cookies, challenge yourself to make fish. Look up cool challenges that are helpful, like 20$ a week food recipes. Risk mixing things up and adding a sauce to something you’ve eaten before. Having a hand in what you eat makes such a satisfying gut feeling, even if it’s for no one else. Or for everyone else! Bring larger lunches to student meetings or study groups. Plan to bring a snack each to a hang out or before going to the movies. Involve others into generating amazing skills like how to home fry your own chicken nuggets or how to bake lasagna. Make it a fun before-party activity with good friends. Find cool cookbooks like the World Of Warcraft or Pokemon cookbooks, and make the cute things you love! Take a moment to appreciate the little things like rain dripping down trees and bus shelters. The beautiful fresh smell as smog and fumes are smothered by that fresh rain and the earth opens up it’s pores. Appreciate the glades of grass in a garden or park, find a moment between commuting from school to home to sit on a bench and just breathe. Challenge yourself to take a small walk, even if it’s literally to put the garbage out at the curb. Going shopping somewhere you know? Take a small detour down the side road, explore the neighbourhood where you live. Been up and down the same street for 5 years? Try to see what stores are new, or what the people around you are wearing. Know of a neat park near your favourite mall? Bring a book to write anything that comes to mind, or crafts to work on in the sun or cloudy skies. See what changes around you, how time progresses and grows the world while you’re busy elsewhere.  Doing chores. No one really likes doing chores when it’s all piled up. So break it down! Today, maybe you only organize your dvds into one shelf. Maybe tomorrow, you finally drag all your old receipts and papers into the recycling bin. Every single little bit helps you do something gratifying, and reduces the size of the mountain to small, moveable rocks. Or! If you want, plan a special day just for you. Make the best playlist for the most rocking party, prepare the most comfortable cloths you have and make it a date. Today is the day that I tackle that closet! Drag it out, revisit memories and sort things into three categories. Break it down, make every task into steps that feel easier to follow through on. Can’t finish your room? That’s okay! You spent four hours tidying, and that effort is amazing. It feels so good to get something done! I recall somewhere that the spirit behind the Ghibli movies was to show that beautiful light behind the ordinary. They were written and animated to share with people how to make their lives more fun, more charming. Turned the mundane into the extraordinary, making things like chores seem fun and possible. Reaching to the reality often forgotten behind pressures and stress. So stop just dreaming. Take charge this year, to turn your life into a Ghibli film. Jump into it, take little daily things into your hands and make that reality.  I believe in you. Never feel bad, it’s all one small step at a time.

I saw a documentary about this. Climate change and habitat destruction, while bad, are forcing some octopuses to live closer together, potentially solving a problem that has kept them from being a far more dominant species. They are super smart and very capable of learning from each other but when they live alone, they never get a chance to learn from other generations because their parents leave or die. Now there’s older ones living with younger ones who can pass on knowledge.
