I am sharing this video to show his current condition in the hospital. The situation is slowly changing, and we are thankful that he is receiving care, but the journey is far from over.

The total hospital bill is $1,600. So far, with your help, we have managed to pay $400, but we are still in urgent need of $1,200 to clear the remaining balance. In addition to the hospital bills, we still need support for medication and other basic needs during his recovery.

Our brother was brutally beaten because he is transgender. He was first taken to a government hospital, but there he faced neglect, discrimination, and transphobia. The staff did not give him the care he urgently needs, and his condition kept getting worse.

Because of this, we were forced to transfer him to a private hospital where he can receive proper and humane treatment. This decision was not a choice — it was the only way to try to save his life.

However, we have no money.

Last night, our transgender sister was attacked while sleeping outside.

She had no shelter, no protection, only the street.

She is now injured and needs urgent medical care. This violence happened because she is transgender and homeless.

We are raising funds for her hospital treatment and to build a safe shelter so transgender women are not forced to sleep outside again.

On Christmas Day, one of our transgender sisters was brutally beaten simply because she attended prayers in a homophobic church. What should have been a moment of peace and faith turned into violence and trauma. She is still recovering, and our community is deeply shaken.

Because of this, we—63 queer and transgender refugees—have decided to create our own small, safe church where we can pray without fear, without hatred, and without violence. A place where our identities do not put our lives at risk.

However, we cannot do this alone.

To construct a simple church shelter, we urgently need:

40 iron sheets

200 timbers

10 kg of nails

In addition, our sister who was attacked is still in the hospital. We do not have funds to cover her medical care, food, or basic needs during recovery. Any support toward hospital bills and medication would be life-saving.

We are not asking for luxury—only safety, dignity, and the right to worship without fear.

I’m writing these words out of sheer desperation. I feel like the world has turned its back on us. Just today, I came across a statistic that Tumblr has over 100 million downloads. That’s an enormous number! But imagine what if 100 million people saw you and ignored you? How would that make you feel? Deeply disappointed? Invisible? Or perhaps wishing you didn’t exist at all?

For us, the LGBTQ+ refugees in Burundi, that feeling of being invisible is our daily reality. We live in constant suffering starving, battling disease, and enduring relentless persecution simply because of who we are. Every day, we fight to survive, knowing that the world seems unaware of our struggles.

Despite hunger, fear, and rejection, we are still here.

We share what little we have.

We protect one another.

We raise our voices because silence will erase us.

This post is a call for solidarity. Share our stories. Talk about us. Help us be seen by organizations and people who care.

Every day we wake up with fear in our hearts.

Fear of attacks.

In Musenyi Camp, our identities put our lives at risk. Some of us need urgent medical care but are afraid to seek help. Others are starving quietly, hoping tomorrow will be kinder.

We are not asking for special treatment.

We are asking for the right to live.

LGBTQ+ lives are not disposable — even in refugee camps.

I am an LGBTQ+ refugee living in Musenyi Camp in Burundi.

Here, being queer means being invisible and unsafe.

Many of us face daily harassment, rejection, and violence simply because of who we are. We are pushed aside, denied protection, and treated as if our lives do not matter. Some of us have been forced to leave our shelters and sleep outside because the places meant to protect refugees are not safe for LGBTQ+ people.

We did not choose this life. We chose survival.

Our silence is not peace — it is pain.

Life in Musenyi Refugee Camp is already hard, but for LGBTQ+ refugees it is even harder.

We are attacked, insulted, and excluded because of our identity.

Some of us sleep outside. Some go days without food.

Many suffer in silence because speaking out can cost us our lives.

I created this account to speak for those whose voices are silenced.

Being LGBTQ+ in a refugee camp means living in fear every day — fear of violence, fear of hunger, fear of rejection.

But silence will not save us.

This page is our truth, our pain, and our hope.
