āYou need a new superhero name.āĀ
Damian brought it up unexpectedly, eyes still trained on the security camera he was dismantling.Ā
āWhat?ā Jon was sifting through the footage, using superspeed to catch every little detail of last night, but at Damianās voice, he paused the recording and looked up.
Damian was still digging inside the camera, having removed the back panel and a good chunk of wires, and was now sifting through the piece of tech with a pair of tweezers. Nonetheless, he continued the conversation.Ā āA name. Youāre not going to be Superboy forever, are you?ā
āUm,ā Jon could honestly say heād never thought about it. Heād always been Superboy, ever since he could remember. He wasnāt one to place much thought into birthrights or heritage, not like Damian, but he also wasnāt overlooking the fact that his father was Superman.Ā What exactly did that make him? Superboy was the obvious answer.Ā āI donāt think I canĀ be anything else, Damian.ā
āYou have an older brother who also goes by Superboy.ā
Jon shrugged.Ā āWe share.ā
āStill. Youāre graduating high school in just a few months, Jon. Though itās surprising to say, youāve outgrown the title.ā
Jonās lips instantly turned upward in a smirk.Ā āIāve outgrownĀ the title, huh?ā
At that, Damian turned to glare at him. Pointing a finger, he said, āI will taze you. Shut up.ā
āWhatever you say, short stack.ā Jon chuckled at Damianās little growl.Ā āBut honestly, what else am I supposed to be? Everyone knows me asĀ āSupermanās Son.ā I mean, Dadās name is so big in the League, I donāt think Iāll ever separate myself from it.ā And if he was honest, Jon didnāt know if he wanted to separate himself from it.
Damian hummed.Ā āNot true. Look at Richard.ā
āDick? What about him?ā
āWell,ā Damian paused to move the tweezers to his other hand,Ā āRichard started out as the first child hero, working under Batman. And unlike the other early proteges, he didnāt simply work as his mentorās sidekick. He created his own legacy. And then he became Nightwing.ā
āBut Nightwing was already a thing,ā Jon pointed out.Ā āItās a Kryptonian legend.ā
āYes, but there hasnāt actually been a Nightwing, has there? Even if there was one on Krypton, Richard was the first Nightwing on Earth. You wouldnāt call him a sidekick, would you?ā
āWhat, no!ā Jonās reaction was immediate.Ā āNightwingās, like, one of the most well-known guys out there. Literally everyoneĀ knows him, and literally everyoneĀ trusts him. Heās not a sidekick.ā
Damian turned to smile at him.Ā āSome would say he was. Do you understand my point?ā
Jon pouted, took a deep breath and let it out.Ā āYeah. Yeah, I think so. I donāt know, Iām not even sure how to go about doing that.ā
āWell, to start off, find a new name.ā Damian hunched over the camera even more, suddenly focusing in on something.
āI guess so. You got any ideas?ā At Damianās lack of response, Jon asked again,Ā āDamian?ā
Damian straightened, holding up the tweezers. Clasped tightly between the tongs was a miniscule data chip.Ā āHereās the footage weāre looking for.ā
Jon stared at him, eyes wide.Ā āHow did you even know that was there?ā
Damian shrugged.Ā āSimple matter of deductive reasoning.ā
āTim told you, didnāt he.ā
A pause. Then,Ā āDrake may have mentioned a while back that a certain trafficking ring was hiding the data chips inside the cameras, and that others were catching on to the trick. I simply tested out his theory.ā Damian looked physically pained, and Jon laughed.
āCool. Put it in, Iāll look through the footage.ā
Damian handed the chip over, then laced his his fingers together, put his arms above his head to stretch. Jon, still holding the chip, stared at the line of Damianās muscles. When Damian quirked an eyebrow, Jon quickly cleared his throat and took the old data chip out of the computer, replacing it with the new one.Ā āSo, any ideas?ā
āFor your name? A couple,ā Damian said.Ā āOf course, you need to have an idea for what youāre thinking of.ā
Jon nodded absently, pressing rewind on the footage.Ā āIām not sure if I want to separate from the Super name entirely, though.ā
āYou donāt want to, or are you scared to?ā
Jon snorted.Ā āYou probably know the answer to that better than I do. I think I got a name, itās on the side of the truck.ā He zoomed into the footage.Ā āYeah, it looks we were right. The pharmaceutical companyās related somehow. Thereās that stupid gremlin looking thing again.ā
āThe griffin?ā Damian asked, peering over his shoulder. He made a contemplative noise, brows furrowed
āIs that what that thingās called? Looks like a half drowned bird.ā
Damian laughed, and batted Jonās hands aside. āThatās not what an actual griffin looks like. Here.ā He pulled up a couple pictures on his phone.
Jon swiped through a couple pictures, eyebrows raised.Ā āYeah, those are a lot more impressive. What are they though?ā
āMythological creatures from a variety of different places. They have the body of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle. Theyāre quite majestic.ā
Jon squinted his eyes at him.Ā āYouāre implying something. I know youāre implying something.ā
In response, Damian nodded his head towards the phone.
āGriffin! Itās a perfect name.ā
Jon raised his eyebrows skeptically.Ā āOh yeah. Because Iām part cat and part bird. Perfect analogy.ā
Damian slapped his hand lightly.Ā āNo, you moron. It doesnāt have anything to do with the eagle or the lion.ā
āYour dual heritage.ā At Jonās uncomprehensive look, Damian sighed.Ā āYouāre half-Kryptonian, half-human. And it shows. When you fight, youāre fierce and unafraid, much like your father. At the same time, though, youāre endlessly curious and inquisitive, like your mother. God knows Iāve been on the end of that far too often.ā
āOh. That, huh. That actually makes sense.ā
Damian shrugged.Ā āIām just saying. It would be a good homage to your roots, and youāre honoring your parents, without being too overt.ā
Jon looked down at the phone again. The lion part was strong, muscled, steady. The birdās head was curved and fierce, wings spread majestically.
Ā āGriffin. You know what? I kinda like it.ā
