Lisa Marie is Bloggin for the Benefit of the World

Leaving aside the fact that cycling is incredibly popular in Vancouver outside of the city’s richest neighborhoods, this is a comically terrible idea from an urban planning and transportation perspective. Free parking is one of the absolute worst uses of space in a city, and combined with her proposal to remove the bike lanes already under construction and to only add new ones if an existing bike lane is removed is simply going to result in even more traffic, congestion, pollution, and vehicle-related fatalities. Ironically, this would negatively effect the voters she’s hoping to target the most (i.e. wealthy, car obsessed homeowners in Point Grey and Shaughnessy), but the anti-bike movement in Vancouver is one of the city’s most reactionary local political groups. While her chances of becoming mayor are slim at this point, the people who would vote for her are the perfect example of people who would sacrifice their long-term well-being in order to spite something or someone that they hate (in this case, bike lanes and measures to reduce car dependency).
