Ok so this is an issue that affects all kids, but the lens i have most recent experience is as someone who is transage/a syskid. But again it applies to all kids.
Even people who understand in and root for youth lib positions still enforce this sort of platonic ideal of what a kid is. To literally everyone who isn’t a kid the child is expected to be silly, not worth taking seriously, never capable of reason or complex thought. Theres this idea that kids are dumb. Not just lack of knowledge dumb but like truly impossible for them to have thoughts that hold weight dumb.
Speaking from personal experience, even with people who are youth lib, and understand I’m a system, and understand that I (Cecily) am a kid. If I don’t “act like it”. (ie adhere to their expectation of what a kid is). Then I don’t get seen as a kid. If I’m not doing typos, or I if I share ideas and thoughts on stuff a little too much, or I have sexual thoughts or desires in the “wrong way”. Then to some people I become not a kid.
And this is an issue that affects all children. There is this box that you are expected to fill. And until you arent a kid anymore, people will treat you like nothing you say holds any weight. Again even people in these circles will hold someone “being a minor” as reason not to debate or engage with them.
There is a pressure to conform for basically all demographics all the time, but kids are perhaps the one group where even in the most leftist circles will be treated as something that is ok.
