By age 40, about one in 10 adults will experience some hearing loss. It happens so slowly and gradually, says audiologist Dina Rollins, “you don’t realize what you’re missing.” And even as it worsens, many people are in denial.
By the time someone is convinced they have a hearing problem, age-related memory loss may have already set in. But, here’s the good news: Restoring hearing with hearing aids can help slow down cognitive decline.
Consider these findings: Researchers tracked about 2,000 older adults in the U.S. both before and after they started using hearing aids. The adults were participants in a big, national study, the Health and Retirement Study.
“We found the rate of cognitive decline was slowed by 75 percent following the adoption of hearing aids,” says Asri Maharani, a researcher at the University of Manchester in the division of neuroscience and experimental psychology and an author of the paper. “It is a surprising result,” Maharani says. The study was published this spring in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Me too! I love books. I come from a long line of biblioholics. I see people making “stacks of shame” and putting all their unread books together for a photo. I ain’t doing that. It’d take too much time away from reading to gather them all from different shelves and stacks around the house.

Cool idea! Kids select their age and a topic, then get a book for free.

Parenting is about flexibility. If something doesn’t work, change it. If your child doesn’t respond to some method you use, then, instead of complaining about your child, choose something else that might be more effective. Don’t blame your kids for things that do not depend on them. Be flexible, understanding, respectful, and kind, and watch your children become all those things as well.

Destroy the myth that libraries are no longer relevant. If you use your library, please reblog.
Duh.
of course I use the library. The library is the best. I always get fines though. :(
Our library has a great website. You can even request that they buy you a book and then hold it for you to pick up. How doesn’t everyone know about that??
Also, free kindle books. And not just the classics, but new releases. They have dvds of movies and shows (even Weeds, which was a terrific show. I just thought it was funny the library had multiple seasons). We even have rows of cds you can check out. Ours is usually full of kids for story time or in the afternoons, adults using the computers. It’s also in an old mansion that was donated to the city. I love our library so hard.

In Iceland, books are exchanged on Christmas Eve, and you spend the rest of the night reading. People generally take their books to bed along with some chocolate. How cozy and wonderful does that sound? (More fun facts: Iceland publishes more books per capita than any other country, and new books are typically published only during the Christmas season—the frenzy is called Jólabókaflóð, or the Christmas Book Flood.)
