20 years ago, in Hanukkah 1994, right before my 17th birthday, i released Parverotti, an israeli punk compilation, the first of its kind. 20 bands, 17 of which were active at the time of release, the other 3 were rare recordings of short-lived bands that were active prior to the existance of an actual scene, something that can probably dated to 1991 or 1992. No filter or selection - whoever was around got in. Mostly lo-fi demos and live recordings. Compiled on the Sanyo double-cassette player i got for my bat-mitzvah, designed by a friend who came to rescue at the very last moment after another kid stood me up and didn't do anything with the graphics the bands had sent for the booklet that was never published, and printed in 300 copies, Parverotti was first sold in a show at the short-lived Garage club in tel aviv where 4 or 5 bands who of course were in the compilation. It was traded, copied, duplicated and influenced generations of israeli punks, sought after by collectors worldwide and was ripped and uploaded to a bunch of blogs and file-sharing programs - although the format pretty much died, the internet keeps the music going and that's pretty cool. Releasing Parverotti was a labor of passion and love and a true need to do something for and with this amazing thing that was happening here at the time - an explosion of primal energy and ideas and creativity a moment before the retrospectively natural division to sub-scenes took place. It was a thing of the moment cos when you're 16-going-on-17 you don't think about future impact, cos there is no future - not the Sex Pistols type, but the fuckitall one. Every now and then i get to meet a kid or a collector that talks about Parverotti and every time it surprises me that this piece of tape covered in plastic made such an impact.
