Nintendo is almost the Tumblr of the console war. Winning it by not being as awful as the others... (Sony removing disks from their future consoles; Xbox destroying game studio and probably will switch to all digital as well,...) So yeah, grats to Nintendo for being the only one who hasn't proposed a fully digital console yet, but damn... The video game industry will crash and burn and only a few studios will survive.

You know, it's bad of me to repeat this, but I would feel disingenuous if I didn't. A friend and I were talking on Discord sometime last year and the conversation turned towards the pricing of the Switch 2 and I said, verbatim:

'Nintendo knows that we are on the cusp of another video game crash, so they are trying to cash out NOW with the Switch 2'

Because, yeah, some of Nintendo's decisions going into the next gen of consoles have... Not been great, especially when it comes to pricing. But when you look at the history of the company and the state of the game industry over the past decade and some change? Yeah, this screams 'look, shit's about to hit the fan; I just need to get mine before it does'

... Can't believe Nintendo might end up pulling a Dollar Tree (win by doing absolutely FUCK ALL')

“Win by doing fuck all” really undersells just how much they saw the writing on the wall and reacted to it.

Games are getting so big as to be unwieldy? Cartridges again.

The price of development is running away faster than profits can hope to keep up? Limit the power of the console and keep development focused.

Game prices haven’t kept up with inflation but shrinkflation is the strategy everyone else seems to be embracing? Keep making high quality products but be flexible with pricing. MKW is $80 without the bundle, sure but that still beats GTA6 and you have plenty of $50 first party offerings as well.

Even the game carts that only serve as a check that it’s plugged in is leagues better than abandoning physical media all together.

Even just the choice they made over a decade ago at this point to not chase the latest and greatest in technology and graphical fidelity is paying dividends.

thanks to carbonite han not only misses learning about luke's training montage on dagobah, he's also half-blind during their whole escape on tatooine. luke's out there force-kicking henchmen with his gucci boots and doing flips and shit and han can't see a goddamn thing. now on endor luke's yeeting threepio with the power of his mind and han's just like 'the last time we hung out i had to stuff him in a tauntaun sleeping bag'.

Why is it everyone that sets out to rip off the Souls series fails to include any of the goofiness? Grim as the world of Dark Souls is, it can also at times be completely ridiculous. It's got mimic chests that attack you with fucking Street Fighter hurricane kicks and giant bulging bobble eyed basilisks and whatever the hell Frampt and Kaathe are supposed to be. There's a reason these games are such a rich goldmine of memes.

Even in a dead world devoid of hope there is silliness and whimsy.
