Historic facts I changed for this story and a disclaimer: The Emergency Broadcast system wasn’t invented until the Cold War. I’ve changed this so it was invented earlier during WWII. FDR was President and none of this reflects my political views. He just happened to be our President during this war so he’s the one endorsing.

Caitlin sat in her room, alone and tired. She felt as if the gray walls were mocking her, impeccably smooth. Too smooth.
She knew she was on thin ice with work, and staying up until 4 am wouldn’t help her but she couldn’t sleep.
Her mind... it was racing. She wasn’t used to it at all. It had started out small, when she saw a bird sitting in a tree outside her work. She couldn’t take her eyes off of it. There was something mesmerizing about the way it flew before she just shook her head and returned to work, attempting to shrug the feeling off.
It continued, she found herself wanting to coo at the toddler as he held his mother’s hand every morning on the way to school.
When the screen in her room would report news, she found herself sad when a death was announced.
Then she met you.
You had recently started a job with the same company, working as bio-engineers. More specifically, geneticists.
“EnLight Corp only wants to take away what’s natural! So let’s give in to what we all want to do”
Your task? To find a permanent solution. Eradicate the world of emotions. The pill had been developed 75 years ago during WWII. It was designed for soldiers so nothing would be compromised by our only weakness. Feeling.
“Keep our country alive. The solution is right here. Ingestible, sterile, safe. No more will we have to worry. I have been working with EnLight and together, we will win this war.”
Conspiracy theorists say that in the beginning of WWII, FDR and EnLight Corp. began to give civilians the pill but nobody has any record of that. To everyone else, it started to get pumped into society around 2010. It seemed every advertisement was pushing for this “enlightenment.”
Of course, nobody told the truth. EnLight and the government did whatever it took. They lied. Claiming that the lack of emotion was merely a temporary side effect for a pill meant to be an effective and easier way to vaccinate.
Over time, people stopped feeling, so they stopped caring. They took the pills, not realizing that as time moved on, they were being isolated. Government started to do whatever they wanted. Mercenaries hired by them soon littered the streets, eradicating the world of the sickly homeless. And people didn’t care. People continued to watch as these “Visionaries” (as the media called them) took lives away to serve EnLight.
“These mercenaries, they hide behind their masks and shamelessly pull their triggers over and over! We are being silenced.”
Nobody cared when they moved everyone out of their homes and into bland complexes. Nobody cared when they started to take away kids to raise as Visionaries. Nobody cared while the government and ELC continued to work together, slowly ridding you and everyone else of any differences. People wore the same white top and black pants every day, they ate from the same menu, they watched the same news program at the same exact time.
Slowly, that became life. To the population of your country, nobody else existed. You became sheltered.
People tried to fight it at first. Caitlin Snow watched as her own mother began to work at ELC. It pushed them apart as Carla stopped caring. Cait watched her dad get shot when he tried to escape with her. What scared Caitlin the most was that she didn’t cry at all. There was a tug in her chest but— after that? Nothing. Two weeks of being lied to and taking those pills and changes were already happening
“They do not care about us or what happens! To them, we’re a collectible safe and I, for one, can’t stand it! Throw away the pills, give in to what’s natural. Get angry! Fight back, make noise— do whatever it takes”
You had become the leader of a rebellion. But nobody else had to find out.
You took this job as a cover. You wanted inside information. And you were gonna get it.
When you met Dr. Snow, she was polite. Shaking your hand and greeting you that morning. Nothing really changed for a while. You would greet each other in the morning, but things were completely professional.
You had to keep the act up. Anyone to get caught would immediately be taken to isolation where they’d take away your pills. You’d slowly gain emotions back and it drives every person to insanity, almost always resulting in suicide.
But you just couldn’t help yourself. The chestnut haired co-worker was somehow enrapturing despite the lack of emotions.
You really didn’t mean to fall in love.
“They are stripping us of something beautiful. Today, I found myself desiring a partner. Not just to repopulate— it was more! You read about this in your books but it’s true. I felt love. Real. Fresh, undiluted, pure.”
You knew Caitlin skipped her pills. You could see in her eyes when she would feel. The way she froze when your hand brushed hers.
Fond
Adj.
having an affection or liking for
You could feel her get nervous when you stood close, looking over her shoulder at a Petri dish. You saw her close her eyes and take a deep breath after you had walked away, brushing her hand with yours gently. Her hands were braced on the solid white counter after you had smiled at her.
Excitable
Adj.
responding rather too readily to something new or stimulating; too easily excited.
It wasn’t just a normal, polite greeting smile. She could tell there was something...human about it.
A two weeks later she heard you singing, it was unexpected but her heart pounded in her chest. She kept her back towards you while you paced around the lab, organizing materials.
Enamored
Verb.
Be filled with a feeling of love for
Caitlin hated to admit it but... she didn’t want to give this up. She had forgotten what a genuine smile felt like. She had forgotten what it felt like to wake up and be excited for once.
She knew it was wrong. She knew the consequences. She knew what could happen to both of you if this continued.
Guilt
Noun.
a feeling of having done wrong or failed in an obligation
but she couldn’t stop herself from lightly intertwining her fingers with yours while you worked. She couldn’t stop herself from crying when you had hugged her for the first time. She couldn’t stop herself from kissing back with the intensity of a thousand supernovas.
Love
Noun.
An intense feeling of deep affection.
She— she couldn’t stop herself from the anger coursing through her words as you had been dragged away, the redness of her cheeks matching the way her eyes burned.
Broken
Adj.
(of a person) having given up all hope; despairing.
Caitlin Snow had always been a rule follower. Now she reads the rules before she breaks them.

Head First - Ch. 1
Title: Head First Author: aliciameade Rating: M (eventually…) Pairing: Beca/Chloe Summary: They’re lifeguards.
Also on AO3
Beca isn’t the biggest fan of the sun. Or heat. Or sand. Or the outdoors, really, in general.
She muses over her situation while her eyes scan the shoreline and the rolling waves. Her whistle remains perpetually hanging from the corner of her mouth; she has to use it often. Teenage boys (and adult men, Beca thinks with disdain), are too often getting into trouble. They like to amp each other up, dare one another to prove how much of a man they are by doing things like seeing who can swim out the farthest, stay underwater the longest, and, in what is a very real risk, jump off the jetty that extends far into the ocean. It’s made of sharp, uneven rocks and is very clearly marked as off-limits.
Not that that stops the biggest idiots.

Bechloe - I'll Protect You
(freshman Beca, sophomore Chloe, in highschool)
Word spread quickly around the Barden campus that "the weird little alt girl" is a lesbian when her father mistakenly outed her daughter during a class lecture about LGBT+ literature figures. Yet, Beca didn't mind as much... sure she somewhat owns a grudge against her father for outing her, but it's the 21st century, people are different... right?
It started off subtle, but the brunette noticed it right away. The weird looks in the hallway, the sudden distrust that Beca's female friends developed for her, and the sudden tension and silence within the girls locker room whenever Beca walked in. Surely those kids meant no harm towards the brunette, they were just adapting to the new information that's all. However, those weird looks soon morphed into piercing glares that would drill small holes in Beca's body as she strolled down the hallway. The sudden distrust from her friends turned into complete silence within the friend group during break or lunch, awkward smiles thrown at Beca every once in a while. So, Beca would spend most of her lunch glancing around the cafeteria, usually making eye contact with a redhead that made her stomach flutter. The tension in the girls locker room became each girl nearby Beca's locker slowly changing their location of locker, leaving the brunette alone in her corner; she didn't notice the only one who didn't leave was that redhead who looks at Beca every now and then. Soon enough, the silence that Beca would endure turned into quiet mutters within the hallways whenever she would walk in with her father. The mutters began in the hallway and continued to exist throughout class time, break, lunch, and even passing period. Suddenly, Beca felt very alone. No one would dare look at the 'little dyke' people would label her, her friends slowly drifted away, and she had no one to talk to. Little 14 year old Beca felt horrible... she didn't understand how kids these days could be so cruel and insolent, she had nobody.
Few weeks later, she hears the bathroom door flying open as she's sobbing quietly in a stall. She shuts her mouth, but wasn't quick enough. Light, dainty footsteps approached the bathroom stall that Beca occupied and the brunette recognized those baby pink sneakers anywhere; Chloe Beale is standing outside the stall door.
"Hello? Are you okay?" Beca wipes a tear off of her face
Beca tries to speak in a higher octave. "Yes, I am." But the redhead wasn't fooled. The two sit in silence for a bit, the only thing between them is the grey stall door and Beca's evergreen Jansport backpack that hangs on the hook.
"I know it's you in there Becs..." That nickname somehow made the brunette feel better. "Do you uh, maybe wanna talk? I know about the mean stuff going around about you..."
Beca hesitated and sniffled. She slowly got up and opened the door, only to be met with a smiling sophomore wearing a light colored sundress, denim jacket draped over her; for a 15 year old Chloe is quite stylish. The brunette looks down at her feet before being wrapped in a hug by the slightly taller redhead. If this were anyone else, Beca would've flinched and squirmed her way out of contact... so why didn't she?
"I'm sorry about the bullying... some people need to grow up." Beca only nodded, shutting her eyes as tears rapidly escaped her face. The redhead pulled away and gave Beca a comforting smile, a smile that always made the brunette blush a certain shade of pink. "Do you wanna eat lunch with my friends and I? I don't like seeing people alone... and I've always wanted to get closer to you."
Beca's chest warms up and her stomach turns into a butterfly cage. She felt touched that the redhead always wanted to become friends with her... so she accepted her offer. "That sounds cool... lemme grab my stuff."
Beca grabs her bag and puts it over her shoulders. The hateful stares and remarks were bounced off of Chloe's politeness and happiness. Chloe would distract Beca with light-hearted conversations such as animals and books, the brunette enjoyed her enthusiasm. The redhead kept Beca close to her in a protective manner and the brunette didn't seem to care. She has Chloe Beale on her side from here on out and for young Beca, that is one of the most amazing things that could ever happen to her.
Summary: Beca is encouraged to talk about literally anything other than her girlfriend in interviews, but old habits die hard.
Word count: 1,072.

Beca’s nervous.
She wrings her hands as she waits for the cue. James Corden is probably one of the nicest and easy-going hosts out there. She and her manager reviewed the questions beforehand and they were all light-hearted questions asking about her latest projects and some teasing questions about her personal life. She breathes deeply, wishing that Chloe could have made it to the Los Angeles studio, but she had been saddled with a double shift as well as being bogged down with studying for her practical finals.
She fiddles with her phone, clicking in to read the messages that she already knows are there.
Chloe (3:34pm) You’re going to kill it!
Chloe (3:40pm) I was told to remind you that you are not allowed to talk about Aubrey’s projectile vomit like last time, Bec.

Play Among The Stars (Baby, Kiss Me)
Summary: “I’ve always been in love with the stars, but nothing compares to you, Caitlin Snow.”
Pairing: Caitlin Snow x astronomer!reader
~~
Caitlin Snow could listen to you talk forever.
She fell in love with the way your eyes shimmered as you took her stargazing, resembling the worlds you spoke about.
“What’s that one, right over there?” She pointed, your eyes following.
You could feel her breathing deep as she leaned back into you, arms wrapping around her front.
“Corvus. It means crow. They’re the sacred bird of the god, Apollo.”
“Really? Doesn’t seem like a god-type bird” She remarked, her eyes scrolling across the sky at the constellations you had been telling stories about.
“Did you know, in Greek mythology— crows weren’t originally black? See— his story is that Apollo asked him to watch over his pregnant wife while he was gone. When the crow told him his wife had begun to see a human man, Apollo blamed him for not stopping the affair. So he does what most overreacting Greek gods do— and curses the bird, scorching his feathers black”
“That’s dark. I’m assuming though, that it’s probably one of the lighter stories?” You nodded before telling another.
“Andromeda. She was sacrificed by her own parents to appease Poseidon after her mother’s vanity upset them.”
“Greek mythology is a real downer.” Caitlin quipped, a light laugh escaping the two of you.
“It’s not all bad. It can be really beautiful. Want to see one more constellation?” She nodded as you directed her to a random spot in the sky, she shifted over next to you, leaning into your side while her eyes scanned.
When you didn’t open your mouth to explain, she pushed, “What is it?”
“Psyrotas. Intimate Souls.”
“What’s the tragic story there?” You shook your head, before speaking softly.
“There was a person, and she never felt like she belonged. But— she had a fascination for science, astronomy. She fell in love with the stars. Earth can be lonely, even with 7 billion people. So she dreamed. She dreamed she was born among them, and she was floating so close. But she still felt alone. Even though she wasn’t really. Eridanus was there sometimes, so was Orion. Perseus too. But she wasn’t a part of anything… bigger.”
You could feel her eyes burning into you, but it wasn’t a bad feeling.
“Until she connected with… another, right next to Pluto. There was such a pull of gravity between the two stars. This other ball of plasma gave her hope, a reaction so big was happening and they didn’t even realize it at first. The cores coalesced. Eventually, named Psyrotas. Intimate souls.” Caitlin didn’t know what to say, so she cuddled closer into your side, her lips brushing your cheek before she finally spoke.
“I don’t know how, or why. Buuut I have a feeling that constellation is coming from a more personal place.” You dropped your head, a smile spreading across both your faces when you quipped—
“Okay okay, I know it’s no nerdonium, but I like to think it passes as a decent story. I mean— who doesn’t like a good love story?” Caitlin laughed, nodding her head in agreement as a thought crossed her mind.
“You… have always had a way with words. Storytelling. There are times where I wish this was all life was. The stars, us. No weight of the world.”
That would be perfect,
“Because every time I’m with you, I know I will be okay. Even if life really is kicking our asses sometimes, you’re always there to face the chaos with me. When you tell me these stories, when you sing or play piano, god— I wasn’t expecting this, and before you give a scientific explanation about choice versus chance— just know… I wouldn’t have things any other way.” She saw the gears turning in your head while you tried to organize your thoughts
Your mouth opened and closed before you started to rush out a sentence “SN 1006, Cait—“
“—The brightest stellar event ever observed, your favorite supernova” Caitlin finished, a blush rising onto your face before you continued.
“7.2 light years away from us. Sixteen times brighter than Venus—“ You were speaking so fast, she bet if you translated it— you could travel those 7.2 light years in a mere second. Your head stumbling to keep up with your heart.
“But I— I swear to god, it will never be as astounding as the way you make me feel.” For once, you struggled to articulate what was going through your mind, but Caitlin understood.
All she did was pull you closer to her, your head resting on her shoulder while she intertwined her fingers with yours.
You were in a state of euphoria, and it had been a while since you had truly felt at peace. Imagining that this must be what space feels like, life among the stars, where you can see everything up close.
“Have you ever thought about how people take advantage of space?” Caitlin furrowed her brows at your musings while you continued.
“See— at 10^-36 seconds of the Big Bang, the universe went through cosmic inflation. The world was in a state of chaos. Everything in flux, nothing was constant. Yet people still take advantage of the security of the illusion of a constant reality— ignoring the fact that the floating dust particles you see in the light of the sunrise creeping in, is the same star dust that fills our night sky. Our galaxy.”
Caitlin listened intently— your words painting this picture of how beautiful everything from beyond our star is. Somehow, everything you explained sounded less like a textbook and more like those poems you’d curl up at a local bookstore with.
“They take advantage of what’s thought to be reality. Planets and how many hours it takes for one revolution around the sun, our sun— it’s a constant. People accept light as a constant. We believe our human gaze, to be a passive act.”
“They don’t think about the fact that according to quantum theory, when photons aren’t being observed— they behave like a wave. In waves, there is no location to pinpoint of said photon. But as soon as they’re observed, they behave like particles, having a specific location, having a charge, momentum.” The bio-engineer could feel your heart racing, the inflections in your tone changing when she motioned for you to continue, relaxing at the sound of your voice.
“Stars… we take them for granted. We tell stories about the pictures in the skies, but nobody thinks about the fact that we need them.”
She thought about that. Yes, we need the stars. But Caitlin was thinking more along the lines of the fact that without the stars, your eyes wouldn’t be sparkling. The smile on your face wouldn’t be there, the moments you two spent under the sky… of course the stars are important.
“Think about supernovas, Cait. Without the explosions— our sun doesn’t contain the power to bond atoms into anything as heavy or heavier than iron. Earth would not exist.” She thought about how fast your mind was running in that moment. Your passion for the unknown possibilities lighting a fire.
You leave a blazing trail wherever you go, an impact that nobody could forget or ever want to change. Caitlin hadn’t been warm in such a long time, until she met you.
When you held her hand, she could’ve sworn you had the molten core of Earth right in your palms.
“That iron seeps into our oceans and into our ground, it makes our blood red, it let’s us breathe.”
In her mind, you are the center of her universe. It’s not the iron that keeps her breathing, or the tides that give direction. It’s you. You keep her grounded, while also helping her unfold her proper hands. See without each other— she knows her feet would never leave the Earth beneath, and without Caitlin, you know you’d never touch reality again.
“The stars are everything, Caity.” When she felt your lips ghosting her cheek while you sat together on the blanket, she nearly created a supernova explosion herself just wondering how nobody had named a star after you yet.
“People don’t ever think about how space isn’t just nothingness. Everyone seems to picture Earth as a separate entity from our galaxy, not as a part of it. They forget that we are a puzzle piece to something much greater. They view space as this vastly empty, yet domineering place, devoid of anything worthwhile”
A deep gravity filled the space between you two. The stars overhead meaning so much more.
“…When it’s really just a reflection of their own little world. Our universe and it’s comprehensible matter gets taken for granted. Space, light, quark matter, photons, Pluto— I’ve always been drawn to our galaxy and what lies beyond.”
Pluto was your favorite. Caitlin remembers you telling stories about when it was demoted in 2006. You believed in the little planet. You always fought for the underdog.
“I’ve been enthralled by something not even considered a real planet, 4.67 billion miles away— all the possibilities in a place we consider unknown.”
“Because it’s not space where I’d feel void, It’s here. I’ve never felt like I belonged. So I fell in love with what could be.”
“I’ve always been in love with the stars. But nothing compares to you, Caitlin Snow.”
You always felt like she must’ve come from the brightest supernova to exist. Born among the stars, galaxies within her heart, constellations and meteor showers all in one.
Her eyes looked like they carried galaxies in them. No matter who said that wasn’t possible, clearly had never felt something so passion-filled and unadulterated. Fresh, undiluted, and pure.
There was no denying the way the stars seemed to align when her lips met yours.
How even Pluto and Charon might as well have truly been pressing to see what was almost 5 billion miles away. Unlike the little dwarf planet you loved ever since you could read, the scientist was right there, in front of you and her lips locked with yours.
Caitlin Snow’s kiss, caused a coalescence between more than just elements. More than just the fire and ice that you both resembled. Your souls had met, creating the most powerful supernova explosion into a shower of interstellar dust.
