When I walked past these courts the other day I remembered a piece of writing I had started working on during my postgrad, about the way the law is created by those in power to oppress and control the marginalised. I abandoned it at the time because I chose to write a different piece, on europe and law as a vehicle for the erasure of colonialist history, but the way things have been recently has really made me want to revisit the things I wrote years ago. I wonder if the point I was trying to articulate then now seems eerily prescient or just naïve. The western fixation on law, order and enforcement used to oppress and create power structures seems more obvious than ever, more important than ever to critique and dismantle. Increasingly we look towards alternatives. It now seems impossible to look on these buildings as symbols of justice when the system is so broken. Just a lot of thoughts lately that seem to have no place to go

here are a few study tips on how to learn a new language 💻☺️:

1. start speaking as soon as possible. even when you haven’t learned too many words yet, the most important part of studying a language is not being afraid of using it. so download apps like hellotalk to get in touch with natives! of course, it’s even easier if you already have friends or family members speaking your target language.

2. study the most frequent words! there are tons of free so-called “frequency lists” online that prevent you from studying vocabulary you don’t need in the long run. with only 500 of the right words you could already have basic conversations!

3. get a lot of native exposure - through podcasts, videos and movies. there are so many recommendations on the internet, no matter what language you’re learning. the earlier you start immersing yourself in native material, even if it’s children’s books, the faster you’ll find yourself having fluent conversations!!

4. keep a weekly or daily diary to practice writing in your target language. even if it’s only composed of basic sentences, it’s the best way to use the vocabulary you’ve learned!

hugs from a loved one, open windows and high ceilings, birds chirping, a book devoured in one night, stargazing, reflecting to see how far you’ve come, scented candles and a stack of notebooks, old architecture, a fresh start, typing late at night to finish your piece, newly developed pictures, blushes and shy smiles, exploring a library or bookshop, getting so excited about a project your hands start to shake slightly, the city in the early mornings

“PERSON OF COLOUR”

Here are 3 short reasons that term doesn’t sit well with me:

- I am Black. With a capital ‘B’ and just so we’re clear, I am a black woman and I would like to be referred to as one.

- I cannot relate with an asian persons’ experience racially. The only common grounds we have is being non-white. All ethnicities experince some sort of racial discrimination and bias, but it is not the same with my experience. Therefore an umbrella term shouldn’t be used to desribe all race-related experiences.

- Running on from the last point, the term person of colour seems like a cop-out for whatever race is being discussed. If you are wanting to talk about black rappers, say black rappers, not musicians of colour... the word black is not offensive. It’s an adjective for who I am, a central part of my identitiy. Please don’t label me with a term that describes a stew pot of cultures and traditions.

In simple terms the author Michael Arceneaux says “What does irritate me is when it is employed to essentially erase black people as if that term is interchangeable with black. It’s not.”
