i hate when rich people condescend with the whole 'money can't buy happiness' argument like listen. just because buying your fourth car didn't fill the void in your deluded disconnected-from-reality life doesn't mean not having to worry about food/ bills/medicine wouldn't greatly improve the mental health of literally everyone else on the planet

Is it just me or is the âbody positiveâ movement not working? Like at all?
Other people have said this before/better, but the problem was presenting all women as beautiful as opposed to eliminating the need for women to be beautiful
Itâs not working because the focus is STILL on trying to view yourself as attractive no matter how you look, instead of (as stated above) eliminating the need to feel âattractive.â
The body positive movement SHOULD be focused on bodily autonomy and taking care of your health. The best way to be âpositiveâ toward your body is to treat it well, not by repeating some âI am beautifulâ mantra over and over. You donât have to be pretty. You donât have to see yourself as pretty. Others donât have to see you as pretty. PRETTY IS NOT IMPORTANT. Pretty is not your worth. You exist for you, not for anyone elseâs gaze.
I agree with everyone here, and I also think another major reason it isnât working is because itâs so focused on consumer culture. So much of it seems to revolve around spending a lot of money on clothing and beauty products, shopping, and posting selfies. But companies obviously will never truly care about anyoneâs body image, which is how we end up where we are now, with people contouring away their natural features and buying waste trainers and believing itâs âfeministâ and âbody positiveâ.  I think itâs really interesting that our current instagram makeup culture arose around the same time as the body positive stuff started, and have become somewhat intertwined. If you think about it, spending lots of money to purchase products from a corporation run by a man, spending lots of your time applying those products, and ultimately putting in a lot of effort to alter your appearance to something that society sees as more attractive is the opposite of whatever âbody positiveâ should be. Yet weâre told it is body positive because itâs a creative way to express yourself and itâs fun. But whatâs creative about following the same trends everyone else is following in a generic style designed by a corporation? Whatever authenticity, flawed or otherwise, this movement might have once had has been totally taken over as a corporate marketing scheme.Â
Can we discuss this in the scope of plastic surgery and how all these influencers are doing it in the name of feminism and body positivity. They all say that they did it for themselves and nobody else but we donât exist in a vacuum and the beauty standards set by these corporations, run by men, are why you feel the need to change anything in the first place.
