Porter Ray’s flow sounds like a stream of consciousness, playing with syllables and cadences with the upmost smoothness.  It’s a perfect match for Ray’s music, often spaced out, loosely psychedelic and chill as can be.  Jazz and soul influences enter Ray’s ambient/hip hop beats, based in traditional vibes but performed with an experimental touch.  Dreamy but grounded, the rapper rides in a unique space.  His 2015 EP Nightfall resonates internally, storytelling tracks about coming up in Seattle through hard circumstances and reflective living.  His hometown reputation got him signed to Sub Pop, representing hip hop on the label in a way that jives inherently within the eclectic label’s roster.  Porter Ray showcases on Friday night at Blackheart with fellow Sub Pop signees Mass Gothic, Cullen Omori and more.
