California Hospital to Pay $8 Million for Dumping Hazardous Waste and Patient Records
Loma Linda University Health will pay nearly $8 million to settle allegations that it improperly threw hazardous materials and confidential patient records into regular trash bins. The California hospital system, which operates facilities in Loma Linda and Murrieta, was caught disposing of pharmaceutical waste, batteries, aerosol cans, and medical documents containing private health information in containers headed for landfills rather than following proper safety protocols. The settlement includes $6.75 million in civil penalties, plus funds for environmental projects and investigation costs. While $1 million of the penalty was suspended, it can be enforced if the health network fails to spend $3 million on required compliance improvements. The agreement also mandates a permanent injunction blocking future violations. Hospital officials stated they have already implemented systemwide waste management overhauls and enhanced employee training after discovering the disposal issues during internal reviews.
