the last time there was a big war without vaccines more people died from the flu than from the war. until extremely recently more people died from disease than from violence during every war, ever, for the whole of human history. ending vaccine mandates for soldiers really is shoving a live grenade down your pants to own the libs. very few policies could theoretically kill more US soldiers than this one
The United States has a volunteer military. Those who volunteer to serve should be afforded the respect to make their own medical decisions with informed consent. Even in the event of a draft, our government respects legitimate conscientious objectors to military service—it is wholly inconsistent to place such a high regard in one’s beliefs as to potentially exempt him entirely from mandatory service while steamrolling the next man’s beliefs in order to violate his bodily integrity. If military readiness is the god upon whose altar all personal medical decisions must be sacrificed, why not simply remove every military volunteer’s appendix and gallbladder right at the recruiting office to avoid any possible complications later in the field? Why not sterilize every female recruit to avoid the possibility of pregnancy affecting her ability to carry out her duties?
The military has a duty to educate officers and enlisted as to the history and utility of vaccines in the military and the efficacy, safety, and risks of the vaccines currently recommended for those in the military versus the illnesses they are likely to face rather than treating them like lab rats on which to experiment vaccines and other prophylactics. Almost every war in which the United States has been engaged since the end of the Second World War has been a war of choice, not some titanic struggle for national or civilizational survival; in that context, it is wholly unethical to force volunteer servicemen to take pharmaceuticals that could cause grievous lifelong injuries or possibly kill them before they even render any service to their country. Or are the pharmaceutical contractors who presently supply the military so trustworthy as to have presumptive access to every serviceman’s veins over every possible objection?

It is not only acceptable but necessary to preserve things from one’s youth and/or acquire as authentic as possible near replacements so that the “Early Years” wing of the future museum built to one’s honor/memory/infamy has a sufficient inventory of artifacts to exhibit. As such, your museum’s future curator will thank you for making this purchase and taking good care of it.

i think most cases of self described scrupulosity are not real but also that many suffer from it without realizing it
I remember in Catholic young adult groups where a just-short-of-scandalous level of oversharing was encouraged to the point of expectation, a recurring small group discussion question after a presentation would be something along the lines of “what sin(s) do you struggle with?” which among half a dozen near strangers activates the same defense mechanisms as the perennial job interview question “what is your biggest weakness?” In that setting, “scrupulosity” took the place of “I’m a perfectionist/too hard on myself” in the analogous job interview scenario: the safe answer for someone who—completely justifiably—has no desire to spill their guts before strangers. That said, someone who proclaims their self-described “struggle” with scrupulosity unprompted (i.e. in social media posts, on podcasts, etc.) is very likely just lazy in that they have never made a true examination of conscience and/or prideful in admitting to scrupulosity as a misdirection from the sins of which they are truly ashamed. All this however can be largely avoided by simply saving one’s sins for the confessional.
this is the most basic advice that literally any medical professional would agree are good things and actively recommend to everyone. alt-med and self-described "crunchy" people drive me insane, they're so obsessed with thinking they alone are the wealth of health knowledge and act like this is some sort of secret the medical industry is hiding from you.

I have long suspected that the headlines about AI decimating the entry-level job market were mere propaganda by the tech companies aiming to convince other CEOs that their firms were being left behind by failing to replace their workforces with AI systems. This new study seems to support that hypothesis. In brief, there does indeed appear to be a steep decline in open entry-level positions but that decline is almost entirely due to the increase in work-from-home positions in the wake of COVID lockdowns.
As can be seen, the steep decline in junior hiring clearly began before ChatGPT was introduced and long before widespread attempts to replace human staff with AI. It was entirely predictable—and oft predicted—as early as 2020 that emptying the offices in favor of work-from-home would result in a business climate where it would be impossible to meet, mentor, and monitor potential new employees. Some things can be done remotely—on-boarding new staff at scale is not one of them. Career advancement requires the presence of both the mentor and mentee. Most of the candidates we interviewed in the last couple years appear to place a premium on working from home (which I completely understand—who wants to sit in traffic twice a day?), but it is clear that remote work is a major culprit in cutting-out the bottom rung of the career ladder. The best thing a new entrant to the job market can do (besides going into business for one’s self) is starting their career in a business where everyone, including management, actually shows up every day.
