I was driving back from my lab and i was listening to “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars. The last verse of the song is so impossibly bittersweet. Despite all the guilt he felt when he lost his love to another man, he still wished the best for her.
JJK SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 (possibly season 3 if you aren’t caught up with the new characters)
Mentions: Nanami Kento, Higurama Hiromi, character death, some correlation with the plot, non-gender specific reader

I had the most unfortunate thought of firstlove!Nanami in a similar scenario to the last verse of “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars. However, unlike Bruno, Nanami didn’t lose his love due to a neglectful relationship to another man. He instead lost his love because of the relentless battles he fought in Shibuya.
Nanami ripped through transfigured human after transfigured human in the train station. It wasn’t until he felt an eerily familiar cursed energy behind him that he knew this was the end for him. In that moment he didn’t feel tired, he didn’t feel angry, he felt guilt. Guilt because his mind thought of his darling Sweetheart and how he will no longer be there to give them all the affection that they deserve. As his body starts becoming a transfigured lump of biomass, Nanami’s memories of his lover flashed before his eyes. Nanami would buy them their favorite flowers frequently. He’d hold their hand every chance his hands were empty. Or how he’d spend all his free time around them…and possibly stay up just a few more minutes to cherish the image of their peaceful, sleeping face. He weakly smirked at the memories of him begrudgingly attending parties with them, dancing as stiff as a board at the obnoxious venue. He did it all just to see them smile up at him while they danced with more rhythm than him.
But now…he feels auniquely sharp pain raise up half-burned torso as Mahito’s transfiguration ability courses up his body. In the brief moment of reality apart from his flashing memories with his lover, he looks at his poor student Yuuji Itadori. The boy’s face plastered with distraught. It would be rude not to say a farewell to his favorite student.
“I’ll leave the rest to you”
With that, he closes his eyes and lets the transfiguration process consume him whole. Naturally, the last thing that he can muster up in his mind, is a faint memory of the sweet movement of his lover’s body moving to some faint music.
Just before it all turns to nothing.
After much healing and time after Nanami’s death, secondlove!Higurama comes in to hold the torch that was once held by firstlove!Nanami.
Now, Nanami’s soul isn’t there to witness the likes of this ‘Higurama’ man. He can’t ensure that Higurama is treating his lover as tenderly as he once did. The flowers, the hand holding, the quality time, and the dancing. But, if he could see the new life that his lover lives with this new man, he would be just as bittersweet as the last verse of Bruno Mars’ song.
