Nothing actually makes me more emotional than remembering that Neil and Charlie were BEST FRIENDS. Like what do you mean Charlie had to tell all his friends that his BEST FRIEND is dead. What do you mean Neil called out to Charlie by name telling him he got cast as Puck. What do you mean Charlie was the ONLY person to try and reason with Mr. Perry after the play. What do you mean???????
No because I think Charlie's grief is HEAVILY overlooked in the fandom so here's me rambling about it
Like, it's undeniable that Todd & Neil were in love. But even then, they'd only met that year. And while ofc they formed a very strong bond during that time, Todd only had Neil in his life for a few months.
I feel that because theirs is a "tragic love story", and bc of the extra attention it gets in the film (the snow scene), Todd is considered to be grieving the most out of the poets. But friendships are just as important in someone's life, and the grief can hit just as hard.
We don't know exactly how long Charlie & Neil had known each other, but usually your best friend is someone you've known for quite a while, and considering the context we get in the film (e.g. the footage of young boys who go to Welton, and the way Charlie walks in and greets Neil like an old friend, comfortably sitting on Neil's bed, etc.), there's a high chance Charlie and Neil started at Welton at a young age, years before Todd, and that they've also been friends for a long time.
So Charlie had had Neil in his life for YEARS. And Welton is a boarding school too, so they saw each other every day, at every meal, in every class. And the thing you pointed out with Neil telling Charlie that he got the part—they clearly shared things that were important to them.
For Charlie, having Neil around was second nature, part of the routine. To have that suddenly stripped away, someone you've grown up with and shared all your highs and lows with??? That is NOT something you get over easily.
Adding the fact he got expelled, which probably meant trouble at home too (I imagine his parents weren't too happy about it), Charlie must've had a very hard time finding rhythm in his new life.
And ofc how someone experiences grief isn't a competition, and it's not necessarily a measure of how important a person was to you.
But I think Charlie's grief is genuinely overlooked. He's too often dismissed as "the funny one" without proper acknowledgement of his emotions
it really fucks me up that neil's last words were what they were. he didn't go out hating himself. he didn't go out feeling like his life didn't matter. he didn't go out thinking no one cared about him. he was really good and he fucking knew it. and yet he still went out.
