i talked ab this feeling in therapy yday and my therapist asked me, “would it really be so bad if your memories changed? if they softened and faded or looked different over time? why does that frighten you so much?” and i said, “i don’t want the love to disappear.” and she looked at me for a long moment and then she said, “it won’t. it doesn’t work that way. even if the memories soften or change, it doesn’t mean the love does. that love keeps going backward in time, forever, because you love her still. all is not lost.” i just thought i would share that in case it resonated w anyone else too.

My Unrivaled predictions:

-Shane and Ilya do a joint interview, either interviewer is awful and public reception is supportive or interviewer is kind and public reception is upset/angry/homophobic

-Anya is first dog of hockey. She has a magazine spread.

-Ilya injury and Shane captains the Cens? Like I think healthy first half of the season and Shane has to adjust to being on a new team and dif dynamics and then figuring out how to fill Ilya’s shoes while out on IR?? Also possible Shane freak out about not playing with Ilya or fear of Ilya having to retire early? (But not actually bc they WILL retire together)

-Like I think this book is sooo going to be Shane focused and challenging him to be able to see past how he always did things and accepting different definitions of success

-Ilya navigating connection to Russia post outing, via other Russian players haters and/or supportive, maybe other Russian immigrants outside of Sveta and Galina?? Boy needs community.

-Shane finally goes to therapy? Please?! Not even for the tism but the anxiety bb he deserves it

More thoughts on the Ilya Injury idea and why I think it could happen?

1. There has to be some sort of conflict/antagonist something moving plot forward. I don’t think it will continue to be totally external, Crowell plot is pretty done.

2. It would be so challenging for Ilya as a person too? To be loved and care for by Shane and his team even when he cannot compete! To have to learn the hard way to rest, and that to rest does not equal being lazy!! To have to truly internalize his worth outside of his being a captain and strong competitor!

3. I think it would satisfyingly address a lot of the emotional struggles people face with retirement and stagnation since I think it’s unlikely we will ever get there outside maybe an epilogue or short story by rr.
