I was recently interviewing the woman who founded Her Universe and we were talking specifically about women and geekdom. I asked about the rise of girls in geek culture and she very accurately corrected me: There is no “rise” of geek girls. We’ve always been here. Girls are just as nerdy as dudes are. Ladies have always been interested in sci fi and fantasy and video games - we just don’t talk about it a lot because men are assholes.

It’s like a ritual, how I wait to pack for a trip until late the night before. I have to be up in 4 hours to get to the airport, but here I am, still packing. Looking for my travel mouse, my spare batteries, that hoodie I like to wear on planes, the pair of headphones that doesn't hurt my ears --no not those! they make everything sound like a Klingon mating ritual-- and finally finding them all. Packing them carefully, preciously even though I know my perfect-as-a-tetris-screen suitcase will look like a disaster by the time I get home.

Now. Do I call a cab in the morning, or take the train.... decisions, decisions...

The production of a doll like this where players are encouraged to physically molest an already hyper-sexualized female game character’s breasts is gross, but should not be at all surprising, at least not to anyone who’s been paying attention to the Metal Gear Solid series, This doll is completely consistent with Kojima’s ongoing pattern of sexually objectifying the majority of his female characters. For just one of many examples, in Metal Gear Solid 4, during Snake’s therapy sessions, the developers built in a mechanic where the player is encouraged to shake the Sixaxis Playstation controller to jiggle the breasts of the protagonist’s PTSD counselor.
