the whole point of ao3 is that it’s a safe space for all fics, and that includes fics about taboo subjects

ao3 has always been firmly against censorship since the day it was created, that’s why it’s run by fans, for fans, on fans’ donations, why it’s a nonprofit organization, that’s also why it has no ads or algorithms or any of those capitalism bullshit

I agree, anon, it's weird and hypocrite when the complaining is rooted in barely concealed misogyny (and the misongynic treatment of female characters in this fandom is a whole other can of worms that would fill many TED talks).

I don't wander often into the TOS tags but even I know how much people there actually love Spock as a slut as long as he's slutting with characters they agree with. If SNW Spock was sleeping with Kirk and McCoy instead, the same people complaining and calling him slut (degratorily) now, would be ecstatic and call him slut (affectionately).

I also still remember seeing a post when s3 started and Spock and La'an became a thing calling SNW Spock a "slut sleeping his way through the entire crew" and then it's... checks note... 2 crew members out of over 200 in the span of 3 years (+ T'Pring but that's still only 3 people in total)... That hardly seems "slutty" and peoples' negative reactions to Spock's love life on SNW seem exaggerated and primarily rooted in fanon/headcanon and shipper bias.

Not just you, anon. I definitely noticed an influx of hate and discourse the last couple of months.

There's always been hate and complaining directed at the show in the past, about characters and storylines, for the show being either too much of this or not enough of that and the other way around, which was fine and not unusual because you can never make everyone happy no matter what or how you write a show and a certain level of discourse is natural, valid and to be expected in every fandom.

But I never had to block so many people like I blocked since season 3 started. It's like the show couldn’t do anything right, except maybe for the TOS 2.0 bits, and people couldn’t let anyone be happy for 5 minutes about stuff that they personally didn’t like. That just sucks and I've seen plenty of other people echoing a similar sentiment about this and how tired they have become of seeing the constant stream of hate and complaining in the tags about everything and how this excessive negativity has sucked a good chunk of enjoyment out of this season for them.

And I agree with you there that a lot of the critique I've seen is unfounded and exaggerated or rooted in poorly disguised hypocrisy and shipper bias - complaining about stuff they give a pass on other shows, for their favorite characters or their prefered ships. The amount of hate directed at La'an for shooting the Gorn and the romance between La'an and Spock are very good examples of this.

So my advice?

Don't be ashamed to use the block button. You cultivate your own fandom experience, so block tags or block people if you don't want to see their takes.

And spread positivity!

Personally I prefer to make pretty gifsets/edits and write stories or just ramble madly about the stuff I liked instead of focusing constantly on stuff I didn’t like.

Im SUPER new to this tag. When I first started on my SNW journey, I encountered the Spock x la'an shipping here and there and was like, "Huh, not my preferred ship, but it's cute. I wouldn't be mad if it happened." Fast forward to "Wedding Bell Blues" and "A Space Adventure Hour, " and I've packed my bags and fully boarded this ship.

And what I've discovered here, in my short time being part of this little community, is a genuine love not only for this ship but the show as a whole. The general SNW tags have been quite disheartening lately with all this unnecessary vitriol towards this show, and I've found my excitement and anticipation for each episode dampened by it.

This tag has been a refuge from all that.

Everyone here shares my love for SNW, and the occasional criticism for it that I've read here comes from a place of positivity and hope, from a place thats wants to see this piece of media we care about, and take joy from, strive to be the best it can. And I love that. We should see more of that.
