When one dies, two appears.

If they die of hazards they immediately spawn two more out of the one who died

If it dies in battle, it can split but only if not consumed, in case of consumption the creature becomes slower yet doesn't receive any damage (unlike the consumption of white pikmin)

So basically you can get a big ass army of them...

The reason behind them spawning after death and splitting in two is that they spread their spore like seed when killed, and they love you so much they don't immediately die as they do when they are hostile

They are only usable in caves and there's no other way to get them, no onion no nothing, the only way to get them is to unlock a new feature for the whistle that "charms" them or whatever

If they were to be implemented, they could only be used in hard mode and only appear in very difficult caves with a puffstool present and if a puffstool appears on the surface all the puffmin will die by the end of the day since they cannot be stored with other pikmin.
