Rest in piece Olivia Newton John (September 26, 1948 - August 8, 2022). She will be absolutely dearly missed. I certainly did not expect to hear this news this morning, and I am heartbroken for the loss of this legend. I am sending all my love and compassion to Olivia’s family during this difficult time. For those of you who may not know, Olivia and Karen Carpenter were best friends. The two met at Annabel’s restaurant in London in 1971. Though they were busy of with their careers, the story goes that they always made time to be together. It’s wonderful to think of them being reunited once again. I hope that Olivia is at peace where ever she may be. On April 22, 1969, Carpenters signed their first contract with A&M Records. After hearing their demo tape, the ‘A’ of ‘A&M,’ Herb Alpert, was so impressed, that he wanted them to be signed immediately. Richard Carpenter was 22, and Karen Carpenter had only just turned 19 that March. Because of this, their father, Harold, had to co-sign for Karen. Happy Birthday to the greatest female vocalist of all time! Ms. Karen Anne Carpenter would have been 72 today. She was born on March 2, 1950 in New Haven, Connecticut at Grace New Haven Hospital. Today, and always, we remember her for her incredible talents as a ‘drummer who sang,’ (as she would have put it), and her long lasting musical legacy for being half of the group, ‘Carpenters.’ She was also an incredible philanthropist, and she was often described as incredibly down-to-earth and kind in her lifetime. Here are a couple photos, and a video of Karen on her birthday over the years (1975, 1973, and 1972). They were all taken in the dining room at the Carpenters’ home in Downey, CA. Ahh! I got so excited to see that my Richard Carpenter Piano Songbook vinyl was finally arriving today! I’ve been so anxious to get my hands on it. I’ve already played it twice through since it arrived this afternoon. The album is incredibly beautiful. The tracks are exceptionally performed— the piano is crystal-clear. The packaging is stunning as well. My favorite rendition has to be ‘Eve,’ which is featured in the opening melody. It was such a unique choice, and it was beautifully executed. I hope you all are having a wonderful day with the people you love. Richard Carpenter once said that the cover of the Carpenters’ album, ‘A Song For You,’ looks like a Valentine’s Day card. With the exception of ‘Top of the World’ and ‘I Won’t Last A Day Without You,’ the album ironically features quite a few heartbreak songs, including ‘Goodbye to Love,’ and ‘Hurting Each Other.’ This album truly has something for everyone. It’s one of my personal favorites in the Carpenters discography.
