😭  Sending the final file at midnight, then getting "actually, can we change the font?" at 7am

😤  Explaining why "just make it pop" is not a design brief

🤡  A client who "has a nephew who does design" ghosting you and coming back 3 months later

🥲  Spending 4 hours on a design, 20 minutes on a placeholder, client picks the placeholder

✨  BUT then a client sees the finished brand identity and goes completely silent... then says "wow." That's the whole reason we do this.

When Italy's No. 1 makeup brand lands in Nairobi, the branding has to be unmistakable. That was the brief for the Kiko Milano campaign work I got to be part of, and it remains one of the most visually satisfying projects in my portfolio.

The work included large-format escalator side panels, column wraps, lightbox displays, and in-mall campaign graphics for the ground floor launch at Two Rivers Mall. The challenge was translating Kiko Milano's sleek European aesthetic into high-impact print formats that would cut through the visual noise of a busy shopping centre.

What I loved most about this project:

✦  Working with a globally established visual identity and extending it into a local context

✦  The sheer scale — seeing your design cover an entire escalator run is a different kind of satisfaction

✦  Nail the technical print specs so the output matched the design pixel for pixel

Here's something most designers won't tell you: a beautiful website that no one finds is just an expensive art project.

And here's something most SEO people won't admit: a site that ranks but looks terrible will lose the click before the visitor even reads a word.

That's why I've spent the last decade doing both and it's become the thing that sets my work apart. When design and SEO work together from the start, the results are genuinely different.

Let me break down how these two disciplines actually intersect:

🖼 Visual hierarchy = better UX = better rankings Google's algorithm increasingly rewards good user experience - low bounce rates, longer session times, clear navigation. A well-designed page keeps people engaged. Engagement signals tell Google: "this content is worth showing."

📱 Mobile-first design is an SEO requirement Google indexes mobile first. If your design doesn't work on a phone, your rankings will suffer - full stop.

📊 Image optimisation Every image I design gets exported at the right file size, format (WebP where possible), and with SEO-friendly alt text in mind. Images that are too heavy slow down your site. Slow sites rank lower.

🔗 Link building with branded assets Infographics, visual guides, and branded content pieces are some of the most linkable assets on the web. When I create these, I'm designing with backlink potential in mind.

🎯 Keyword-informed content design When I design a landing page or blog layout, I'm already thinking about how the structure supports keyword targeting. Headings, scannable sections, internal linking opportunities.

It's a different way of working. But it's a more effective one.

I'll say it louder for the people in the back: your logo is not your brand.

I know, I know - it feels like the logo IS the brand. It's the first thing you design. It goes on everything. But here's the truth: a logo is just a symbol. Your brand is the entire experience of your business. What people feel when they interact with you, the story you tell, the consistency of every touchpoint from your business card to your email signature to the way your team answers the phone.

I've worked with businesses who spent months agonising over logo colours only to completely ignore their brand voice, their typography system, their packaging design, or their online presence. And then they wonder why the logo isn't "working."

The logo doesn't work alone. It's part of a system.

A strong brand identity includes:

→  A logo (yes, this matters, but it's step one, not the whole game)

→  A defined colour palette with actual hex/CMYK values

→  Typography rules (which fonts, how to use them, what to avoid)

→  Brand voice and messaging guidelines

→  Visual style guides for photography, iconography, and layout

→  Consistent application across print, digital, and physical touchpoints

That's what I build. Not just logos - complete brand identities that give businesses a foundation to grow from.

Behind the Work: How We Branded a Mall (Yes, an Entire Mall)

Not every branding job fits on a business card. Some of them fill an entire shopping centre.

One of the most rewarding projects in my recent portfolio has been large-format branding installations. Think cylindrical pillar wraps, elevator door decals, escalator panel campaigns, glass door graphics, and full storefront takeovers. The kind of work you walk past without realising someone spent weeks perfecting it.

Here's what goes into a project like that:

📐 Measurement & surface mapping Every surface has its own curvature, material, and lighting condition. Getting the measurements wrong means a print job that warps, peels, or just looks off.

🎨 Design at scale A design that looks great on screen needs to hold up at 3 metres tall. Typography has to be bolder. Contrast has to be stronger. Negative space becomes your best friend.

🖨 Print spec precision The wrong DPI, colour profile, or file format at this scale = expensive mistakes. Every file goes through a technical check before anything touches a printer.

🏗 Installation coordination The design is only half the job. Coordinating installation in an active mall - without disrupting shoppers - is a project management challenge all on its own.

The result? A space that communicates clearly, looks polished, and turns foot traffic into brand awareness. That's what good environmental branding does.

Let's be honest, we've all seen that brand. The one with the logo that looks like it was designed in Microsoft Word circa 2008. Maybe that brand is yours. No judgment. But there are some tell-tale signs that it's time for a visual upgrade, and I'm sharing the ones I see most often.

1. Your logo looks different on every platform 🤦. If your logo is blurry on your website, stretched on Facebook, and pixelated on your business card - you don't have a brand, you have a problem. A proper brand identity starts with vector-based files that scale perfectly at any size.

2. You can't explain your brand colours off the top of your head 🎨. Brand colours aren't just aesthetic — they're psychological. They communicate trust, energy, warmth, luxury. If you don't know your hex codes, your brand is winging it.

3. New clients can't tell what you do just from looking at your brand 👀. This one stings. Your brand visuals should communicate your value proposition in seconds. If people are confused, the design is doing the opposite of its job.

4. You're embarrassed to hand out your business card 😬. Your card is a handshake. If you're hesitating before passing it across the table, that's the sign you needed.

5. Your brand doesn't reflect how far you've come 🚀. Brands evolve. If your visual identity is still stuck at year one while your business has grown significantly - it's time to catch up.
