A followup to Benny Rave Day 3 (As Lover)
Anthony steers Sophie away from a specific group of women, back towards Eloise and Penelope.Ā
Kate stayed home; pregnant and feeling it; unwilling to come to a ball while feeling ill. Benedict stayed home as well. He's putting the finishing touches on a painting Lady Danbury commissioned.Ā
So they go together, as friends. As family.Ā Sophie quite likes spending time with Anthony and they have become good friends; spending time in the garden and chatting about this and that.Ā
She feels his arm go suddenly rigid as he turns them back the way they came at Lady Trowbridge's ball and Sophie frowns. āBrother?āĀ
āMm.ā
Sophie tilts her head at him. āDid you see some sort of ghost?āĀ
āOne from my brother's past you need not concern yourself with,ā he tells her.Ā
āWell, now you have my attention,ā she grins, stopping their turn about the room to face him.Ā
āSophie-ā
āWhich one?āĀ
āYou need not concern yourself, Sister,ā Anthony stresses.Ā
She stares at him expectantly.Ā
He deflates, sighing heavily. āThe mouse-haired woman. Short. Loud.ā
āYes?āĀ
āLady Emily Chatham. Formerly Miss Emily Dorset. The first young lady Benedict ever courted,ā Anthony explains.Ā
āOh,ā Sophie says quietly. āItā¦it did not end wellā¦?ā
āShe rejected him," Anthony nods. āShe was only interested in titled gentlemen. Used him for gifts. Attention.ā He pauses and lowers his voice. āOther activities.ā
Sophie blinks in silence. She thinks about their first conversation on the terrace. How Benedict had thought the ton's young ladies searching for a husband had little to do with him.Ā
It now makes sense as to why.Ā
Sophie attempts to head back towards Lady Chatham, and Anthony tugs her away again.Ā Ā
āNo.ā
āI merely wish to talk to Lady Chatham.ā
āNo.ā
āAnthony-āĀ
āSpeaking to Lady Chatham will not change the way she treated Benedict,ā he tells her quietly. āI can assure you that she feels no remorse for her actions. The best thing you can do is leave her be, and let the past stay in the past.āĀ
Sophie huffs but nods. āFine.āĀ
*****Ā
And itās not that Sophie doesnāt listen to Anthony. She does, of course she does. Head of the family, Benedictās beloved older brother. She listens.
But she justā¦
Happens to get some lemonade later in the evening, close to where Lady Chatham is squawking with her friends.Ā
And it truly is squawking.
ā...Believe heās married now? Who would ever settle for a second son? And a weak one at that.āĀ
Sophie takes a deep breath, and sips her lemonade.Ā
āClearly, being from the country, she knows no better,ā one of the other women comments.āPretty as she is, she could have anyone. And Iāve heard sheās quite clever as well. The new Lady Penwood speaks most highly of her.āĀ
āWell, at least Benedict is a decent lover,ā Lady Chatham comments. āMaybe thatās all she was hoping for.āĀ
āEmily!ā another woman cries, scandalized.Ā
āWhat?ā Lady Chatham giggles. āI am a married lady now. It hardly matters. And he was so very easyā¦I bet he still is.āĀ
For a moment, Sophie worries that sheās gripping her glass of lemonade so hard it may break in her hand, but she doesnāt make a sound; doesnāt let on that sheās standing right next to them.
She is noticed, though. One of the other ladies spots her standing there, and clears her throat awkwardly, getting everyone elseās attention.Ā
Lady Chatham smiles venomously. āMrs. Bridgerton. I did not see you standing there.āĀ
āYes, well, you do not seem to notice very much beyond your own nose, Lady Chatham,ā Sophie responds without thinking.
The other woman blinks, her smile falling a little.Ā
Sophie just smiles.Ā
āIs your husband not here with you tonight?ā Lady Chatham asks, trying to regain some composure.
Sophie shakes her head. āHe is home, finishing up a painting. He is quite dedicated to his art.āĀ
Lady Chatham seems to think she has regained the upper hand. āOh, how nice. I knew he doodled in sketchbooks, but had not realized he had graduated to something less childlike.āĀ
āThe curators for the National Gallery do not seem to think his work childlike at all,ā Sophie responds coolly. āConsidering they selected three of his completed paintings to display.āĀ
More silence falls over the group.
āHe is still a second son,ā Lady Chatham snaps. āAnd not even a spare anymore, since the Viscount has a new heir.āĀ
āWell, in matters of love, one hardly thinks about those kinds of things,ā Sophie shrugs, sipping more of her lemonade.Ā
Lady Chatham scoffs. āLove.āĀ
āYes. It is that thing one feels in their bones,ā Sophie nods. āHave you not experienced it, Lady Chatham? How sad for you.āĀ
The other woman looks infuriated by the pity, which is when Anthony rushes over.
āSister!ā he cries, trying to look composed. āThere you are. Are you well?āĀ
Sophie smiles at him. āQuite. I was just chatting with Lady Chatham and her friends.āĀ
Anthony looks at the other women, some of whom look a little stunned and Lady Chatham herself, who still looks outraged. ā...Very nice to see all of you.ā He turns to Sophie again. āI would very much like your opinion on a conversation I was having withā¦with Colin! Yes. Colin. This way.āĀ
Sophie gives the other ladies a curtsy with a sly grin. āSo nice chatting with all of you,ā she says as Anthony leads her away.Ā
āSophieā¦āĀ
āI did nothing wrong, I wanted lemonade.āĀ
āThere are six other lemonade tables situated around the room you could have chosen.āĀ
āI chose that one.āĀ
āSophie.āĀ
āShe is vile,ā Sophie tells him quietly.Ā
āYes,ā Anthony agrees. āWhich is why I tried to keep you away from her.āĀ
āShe is not very clever, though,ā Sophie tells him.Ā
He tries hard not to laugh. āSophie.āĀ
āI am only saying,ā she mutters.
They find Colin and Penelope in the crowd, and Colin looks utterly amused.
āDid Sophie just torture Lady Chatham?ā he asks.
Anthony nods. āThe woman looked outraged.āĀ
āGood show, Sister,ā Colin grins. āShe has had it coming for years and years.āĀ
āDo not encourage this madness,ā Anthony orders.Ā
āLady Chatham has long been someone I avoided writing about in Whistledown,ā Penelope tells Sophie. āI found that though her exploits were entirely scandalous, she was not worth my time. To say nothing of the fact that everyone knew. The only time I wrote about her in earnest was when she miraculously found a husband.ā
āLord Chatham is an idiot,ā Anthony comments. āI believe he once got a quill stuck up his nose.āĀ
Colin laughs. āHow?āĀ
āI wish I knew,ā Anthony marvels, before turning to Sophie. āHome?āĀ
Sophie nods. āHome.āĀ
*****Ā
She finds him in the study, still at his easel.Ā
Benedict looks tired, but determined. He glances up as she enters the room, and gives her a crooked smile. āI am nearly finished, I promise.āĀ
Sophie nods, and settles on the sofa, slipping off her shoes and curling her legs up.Ā
āHow was the ball?ā he asks.Ā
She shrugs. āI ran into someone you once knew.āĀ
āOh?ā he asks, chuckling softly. āI have known quite a few people.āĀ
āThis one was not very kind,ā Sophie tells him. āLady Chatham.āĀ
He freezes, and she watches something like hurt flicker across his features as he sets his paint brush down. āOh.āĀ
āWould you like to talk about it?ā she asks softly.
āThere is nothing to say,ā he tells her, a tight grin gracing his lips. āI was young, and I thought it was love, and she knew better.āĀ
āShe hurt you,ā Sophie observes.Ā
āIn a number of ways,ā Benedict confirms. āNone of which matter now.āĀ
She purses her lips and holds her arms out for him.Ā
āIām fine.āĀ
āI know,ā Sophie says. āBut I wish to hold my husband.āĀ
His grin softens, no longer that tight, pained look, and he steps over, settling onto the sofa with her, into the circle of her arms. āForgive me for missing tonight.āĀ
āThere is nothing to forgive,ā she assures him, cuddling in against him. āIt is only a ball. There will be others.āĀ
Benedict nods and goes quiet, closing his eyes.Ā
āYou have paint on your neck,ā Sophie tells him.
āMm-hmm,ā he confirms. āI must have rubbed it absently earlier in the night.āĀ
āRidiculous man,ā she mutters, before leaning in to kiss him.Ā
He moans happily. āIf Anthony finds us here like this, he will complain.āĀ
āAs if we did not find him and Kate in the study at Our Cottage in a similar position,ā Sophie teases.Ā
Benedict chuckles and kisses her again.
