benedict's first instinct is to care. he cares a lot. he is also trying to be brotherly about it, but it doesn't work. he tries to be cool, sharing cigarettes w eloise, spiking colin's drinks with gin, sneaking his sisters out of balls but at the very heart of all of that is this desperate urge to care. however he is unable to verbalise it or process it, so he may prioritise himself as well as others in his life, so he keeps repressing that "huh.. weird" feeling until it bursts out in s4.

he doesn't bother saying hi to colin, leaves eloise in her own club in the swings, lashes out at his mother, at anthony, has an idea of himself only to be humbled by gregory. they aren't pleasant experiences for a nurturer. it is as if he's a mother whose children have grown past the point of recognition. or maybe he's the one that has changed so much.

benedict also bonds with like-minded people. his bisexually frustrated art friends from s2, his wayward rich friends with no hobbies in s3 to name. he loves community. he finds solace in its protection, he gravitates towards such people like a moth to a flame. there's a reason why violet sees so much of herself in him, because she too yearns for community much like her son, she had eight children to project her romantic yearnings on. mother figures crave for a sense of belonging, because motherhood is unfortunately, a very lonely journey. it involves giving yourself away; your identity distributed in shards, but never something wholly yours.

benedict bonding with the local milfs in his area can be so important because he is searching for the same thing they are. lady danbury's intentions to leave the ton after being a maternal figure to all these young ladies, to "search" for herself and learn about her ancestry - much to queen charlotte's chagrin is thematically similar, if not tonally similar, to benedict choosing sophie over his family and being discouraged by everyone around him.

lady d using the words, "one day you will bring the same happiness to everyone in the room" is also an indicator of this, bc as ben looks longingly at the grandchild in his mother's arms, he is not envious of the child, but what the child is to his grandmother. "bringing the same joy" is different from "having a kid of your own one day" and lady d cleverly chooses to go with the former to describe benedict's longing for well... belonging. lady d is the perfect person to clock this, because she's suffering the same moral quandary - caught between longing for her life and time.

i can't speak for mothers but i know they can be famously averse to time, mayhaps more than the average human. time ages them, time changes them - their children, their livelihoods, their purpose. time washes ashore, carrying new things with it but time also takes many things away. benedict is not afraid of possibilities, he is afraid of time. he is afraid this "one day" will never come. he dares to ask when "this one day" will eventually come to be. he keeps waiting and waiting for sophie's answer. he tries very hard to make sophie stay, because he knows something or the other will take her away from him. he's deathly afraid of midnights. he's scared she will flee. he's scared of the paint drying before he can add his final touches to it. he's scared of the moment a child is born and he's no longer needed as the spare.

benedict's livelihood has hanged on time. his entire purpose depends on when anthony will come to pass, not why. his duty depends on when his siblings grow up and when they'll stop needing him as their faux-mother. he doesn't have a lot of time, which is why he retreats to places where time remains transfixed, preserving every fleeting moment in paintings so he can relive them again and again as if it is constantly happening.
