They got it backwards. Parents are not obligated to have children at all. They are obligated to take care of children they have, or make arrangements for those children to get care. I can’t believe this is an actual discussion. My aunt is 60+ and still upset that her father essentially had a job and did nothing else to add to their household. If you’re not here to love teach and learn from your children you hopefully chose to have then hoe why is you here

The thing about this discussion is that everyone has a part of it right. Not every baby is conceived from two loving people trying to have a child. It happens by accident. It happens via rape. Sometimes its wanted when it happens, but circumstances simply dont permit it to happen in a healthy way. This “obligation” to take care of a child that those in favor of the idea are arguing, is an evolutionary obligation, and since the development of our society, has become a common moral obligation as well.

To varying degrees, most people have some form of parental instinct, ranging from some people seemingly having none, to some having it much stronger than their instincts regarding their own self-preservation. Those on the stronger side of the spectrum are much more likely to feel that parents are under obligation to take care of their offspring.

However, if we’re thinking of the concept objectively, there is no actual obligation charged by the universe for this. Back in the good ol’ days when natural selection ruled, The only punishment for a lack of these parental instincts was a greater chance of one’s offspring to perish and their genetic line to be discontinued. Even this concept though, can only really be viewed as a punishment subjectively.

There are many species out there that have absolutely nothing to do with the upbringing of their offspring, because they are born with all the instincts and capability they need to sustain themselves. Even a lot of other mammals are born with far lesser need for parental care than humans, and this is because humans literally evolved so oddly that all of our babies are technically born premature.

So from a human evolutionary standpoint, those with strong parental instincts truly do have an obligation to take care of their children if they wish for the human race to continue, preferably with their genetic line in it. Our biology seems to be a bit behind regarding reproduction, so we must compensate for this once the child is born.

But from an objective standpoint, no one is truly obligated to do anything. So yes. Always be grateful for whatever you have.

Anyways, if you bring another human being into this world - you need to take care of them, love them and give them a good life because as a parent, you are obligated to do that.

Well damn…. to be clear on my end I’m speaking of young adults. Not children… and of course the goal is to improve upon the previous generation of parents. I don’t think for one second that the OP meant the parent of a person who younger than the drinking age.

I do feel there is a disconnect of support and community that affects our whole culture (US born Blacks) We treat each other like shit.

I’ve never been so aggravated, if you have a child and you want your child, take care of them. If the child was a mistake when conceived, conceived by rape, or you don’t want your child/ you’re using your child to keep a person, give you baby away for adoption or have an abortion. You are legally obligated to take care of your child, do you know how many people are in jail or are wanted by the police because they had a baby and they didn’t want the baby so they threw the baby in the trash. If your saying your not obligated to take care of your child in any way, shape, or form, I hope you don’t have children and if you do, I pray for their development and that they’re wanted and loved because their parents don’t believe their obligated to take care of them.
