Useful thought stoppers for the obsessively inclined:
That's none of my business (my favourite)
There's nothing I can do about that right now
Expecting myself to be able to work this out is the height of hubris
I am still safe even though I don't have the answer
I need more data, which I can only get by doing rather than thinking
And a very important one I just learned last night
You already know the answer to this, you just don't like it. Running the data through again will not change it.

Social murder is a term coined by Friedrich Engels in 1845 in one of his seminal works, The Conditions of the Working Class in England. Engels was Karl Marx’s close friend and collaborator, co-authoring some of the most influential works that stimulated worker revolutions across the world. Engels writes:
“When one individual inflicts bodily injury upon another such that death results, we call the deed manslaughter; when the assailant knew in advance that the injury would be fatal, we call his deed murder. But when society places hundreds of proletarians in such a position that they inevitably meet a too early and an unnatural death, one which is quite as much a death by violence as that by the sword or bullet; when it deprives thousands of the necessaries of life, places them under conditions in which they cannot live – forces them, through the strong arm of the law, to remain in such conditions until that death ensues which is the inevitable consequence – knows that these thousands of victims must perish, and yet permits these conditions to remain, its deed is murder just as surely as the deed of the single individual; disguised, malicious murder, murder against which none can defend himself, which does not seem what it is, because no man sees the murderer, because the death of the victim seems a natural one, since the offence is more one of omission than of commission. But murder it remains.”

I've been thinking about this dialog a lot lately from Stray.
when it’s really bad again and it’s still way better than it used to be but it’s still really bad. and you do all the right stuff and you try and try and it still really hurts but it’s working but it still hurts and you go see the beautiful majesty of nature and your soul is so close to being at peace but your mind is still in pain. and it’s better but it’s still bad. and the sun is setting.

“If you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”

I’m actually curious now: do adults really think minors don’t notice that in pursuit of “not dumping emotions” on minors frequently results in cutting them off almost entirely from their personal lives??
Because when I was a teenager, hell, as a preteen or child even, I definitely noticed. I noticed how adults when quiet and shared The Look when it came to talking about financial troubles. I noticed how adults refused to say anything about their significant other in the hospital other than a vague “they’re sick.” I noticed that adults avoided PMs and other forms of contact to avoid getting “too personal” with someone underage.
That shit fucking hurts. I don’t know how many of these same people mostly had conversations with adults as a kid, but I definitely did because I have ADHD and have always been Greatly Annoying to teenagers with little tolerance for neurodivergence. And something has to change with this because it’s not just treating kids carefully and cautiously, it’s refusing to share anything that might be vulnerable or scary at all with teenagers. Teenagers that likely have heard of emo bands by that point. Developmentally, this is an important time to be able to work out that idk bankruptcy and cancer are things that they can move past, that touch people’s lives.
Hell, maybe the whole “selfishness” stereotype that comes with the ageist interpretation of teenagers is artificially created by adults refusing to let them learn about the outside world in a safe and controlled manner. Adults even cover up issues other minors are facing. It’s a wonder that teenagers are able to consistently practice empathy and sympathy for problems they’re never actually told in full about at all.
child: *is passionate about absolutely anything*
parent: gotta insult it
child: *becomes ashamed and embarrassed about the things they’re passionate about and doesn’t share their interests in fear of getting insulted about it*
parent: why aren’t you interested in anything? why don’t tell us anything anymore?
child: *says fuck it & hyperfixates*
parent: you’re obsessed & its not healthy. we are banning you from having the thing you are fixating on
