I finished up pinning the workshop Barred Owl wings and wanted to show one more thing! Newly molted owl feathers are slightly pink and fluoresce under UV light, over time and exposure to sunlight this pink fades until the next year when the owls molt again. This trait can be used for helping age owls, because if they're under a year old all the feathers will be the same age (because they're growing in simultaneously) so all the feathers will be similarly pink. Older birds like this one molt a few feathers at a time so they can keep flying so the pink glow won't be consistent.

I feel like it doesn't really show up well in my photos (sorry) so I included a better photo under the break of a Long-earred Owl wing under black light.

So many of the items in our daily lives are sew-able. A simple needle and thread changes the way you think. When an item breaks, you no longer think, "I guess I must buy a new one..." Instead, you think, "I guess I must fix it..."

How many of these everyday items rest for eternity in a landfill, because of a simple break that a needle and thread could have fixed? How many excess items were manufactured to make up for the forgetting of the humble needle and thread...?

Gender and culture and expression of both of those things are so individual and the problems that come with them are also incredibly individual. And people like fight over what problems are worse.
