Dan recently sent out emails to the international donators that got an episode script. Of course I got episode 41 because,,, yāknow,,Ā There are quite a few differences in the script that I wanted to talk about. However, I wasnāt sure if it was legal to show it. In the end Iāve decided to just describe the differences.Ā
(Please note that the script I was sent was the 2nd revision. There was most likely at least one more revision, so the stuff Iām talking about is obviously stuff that was taken out in the final copy).
A lot of the differences from the script and final episode are mostly slight quote changes, which I donāt think is big enough to note each one. However, small differences in the actual events include,
Skylor wearing a āmaroon dress that exposes her Anacondrai tattoo,ā at the beginning ceremony. It could be this dress that Tommy showed in Skylor concept art.
An exchange between Kai and Jay that didnāt make it through to the final episode.Ā
MASTER CHEN: Zugu, leave the red one. I want a word with him.
Before the chain gang is led out, they unshackle Kai.
KAI (whispers to Jay): Iāll figure a way out of this.
JAY: No offense, Kai, but you donāt have power; I donāt trust you. I trust Lloyd, heās the Green Ninja. Youāre always just getting us into more trouble.
KAI (offended): Fine. Then Iāll find him.
(Jay is literally why Kai is insecure LMAOOO)

Chen is described to be acting like a cat during his fight against Lloyd lol
In the episode, Clouse pulls a lever that releases poison ontop of Lloyd, which Kai shields him from using Lloydās element from the staff of elements. In this script, Kai actually shields himself, because he was apparently the one under it??
The roto jet comes into the room from under Kai, which is what separates him from the staff
Ā There were two (imo) big differences that was super interestingĀ to read, and what I think really makes buying this script worth it.
While Chen is showing him around the relic hallway, Kai grabs a jade blade and plans to attack Chen with it, but gets distracted when he brings up his parents. He drops the blade in front of Nya later on to show that he hadnāt actually betrayed the team (Which was too far for her to reach anywaysā¦). Nya gets the blade when the roto jet group saves her and Garmadon, and is actually the one to break the staff of elements after Kai is separated from it.
Kaiās plan with the staff was to get it before Lloydās power was taken. However, Eyezor saw that he was trying to get closer to it, and held onto him. Thatās when Skylor stood next to Chen. Skylor initially wasnāt meant to be involved at all! Kai telling Lloyd that he, āHad it all under controlā¦ well, almost,ā was referring to his initial plan failing.
And, of course, the corruption scene itself. Iāve always wanted to find out how this scene was written, and actually reading it didnāt meet a lot of my expectations. Not in a bad way! Thereās a few things to note.
The script doesnāt say that his eyes went red. After noting that Kai āseems to be enjoying it (the power) a little too much,ā a darkness is described to slowly fall over him. The script describes his corrupted voice as āpossessed-likeā and says that Kai almost seems as if heās displaying split personalities.
Because the script doesnāt say that his eyes went red, normal and corrupted Kai are differentiated by caps lock. When normal Kai is talking, the script is in lowercase and italics. When itās corrupted Kai, everything is in capitals.
This part of the script is identical to the episode, besides from a small line from normal Kai that I assume got cut out in the final script. In the episode, red-eyed Kai yells at Lloyd saying, āNo one is taking my staff! You had all the power, now itās my turn!ā In the script, however, Kai goes back to normal between the two lines and says,
āJust, a little longer āā
This BLEW MY MIND.
He lashed out at Lloyd for saying they had to get the staff away from him, then said he just wanted it, the power, for a little longer, before irrationally yelling at Lloyd again. It wasnāt until Kai started verbally attacking Lloyd personally that he realized that, hey, maybe having this staff isnāt a good idea.
Something about that is so cool and ties a connection to normal and corrupted Kai. If Lloyd hadnāt said that they had to get the staff away from him, then thereās a chance Kai wouldnāt have targeted Lloyd. And if the reason Kai started fighting back the staff was because he was targeting Lloyd, then thereād be no reason for him to want to let go of the staff, and he couldāve, maybe, been fully corrupted.
Am I reading too into this? Yes. I donāt even know if my wording makes sense. Regardless, this script was a very interesting read, and Iām happy to have received it.

@ Ninjago writers why not just crank up the trauma scale to 11 and have one of the ninja betray Lloyd, thatāll be really good for his trust issues :):):)
I just had a realization about what āthen your gonna get Something betterā Tommy was saying about evil Kai. S14 has purple lightning which isnāt really new to the series if you look at the dark island trilogy, which involves the ninja going to the dark island and getting effected with dark matter. Which might happen again in s14. What if when the original poster said ādark Kaiā Tommy took it as ādark matter Kaiā and his response about it being better means that were going to get a evil Kai thatās not affected by dark matter but is something entirely new.
OOO!! With Misako going missing on the island, as well, it def seems like thereāll be a lot of similarities to the dark island. weāre obv biased but,, literally WHAT could be better than evil kai?? i like to think tommy was assuming the theories said there would be an ep41-like MOMENT,, so him saying they have something better, like a season, makes sense to me

Am I the only one like genuinely confused on evil jay. Like I donāt want to sound rude but his motivations donāt make much sense. Like 2 lines about Kai being a bit of a jerk isnāt really enough to impact jay as an entire character to go evil. And I donāt really see what his plan would be.
To be with Nya? Well heās already with her. To have power? Well we already have two plots regarding ninja going evil because of power in staffs, seems a bit tedious to do it again especially when itās only been 2 seasons since s11. To be respected? Iām sorry but jay getting turned evil by an obviously evil staff even though he knows touching obviously evil staffs from obviously evil people is a bad idea, it will just make him look like a bit of a idiot then anything intimidating. To be admired? Dude has an entire cult and is decently respected by the ninja, like yeha sometimes they make jokes at his expense, but they genuinely listen to him and they respect the things he build like the bounty and such, unlike Kai whoās accomplishments are always being squashed by someone else taking the credit or wu being an asshole. Is it because Nya didnāt say āI love youā wow thatās a really dumb reason and kind of misogynistic. Women donāt owe any man that phrase. And itās not like Nya doesnāt like jay, because they very obviously love eachother.
āBut thereās going to be a relationship problem with jay and Nya, which means he has to be evilā. May I remind you whoās on the poster for the ten year anniversary, you know the year that these seasons are coming out.
Also do you guys honestly expect evil jay, whoās only motive so far is two lines Kai said, to continue being evil for an entire special and two seasons???
Itās cool what idea is coming from it. But making jay evil because of āyou want angstā is kind of undermining his entire character just a tiny bit. Im sure evil jay can work in fanon, but right now this aināt it š
This post isnāt ment to be passive aggressive at all. I just genuinely donāt see how evil jay can work in the story, if you guys have any rebuttals for why this can work then Iād be interested in hearing it. But Iām not convinced at the few points Iāve seen. My only big gripe with this concept is the āNya doesnāt say I love youā thing which is like... nooo... that reason completely destroys the respect in the relationship and makes jay seem like a nice guy.
I see where youāre coming from. Honestly at this point after seeing the trailer, I kind of doubt that itās going to happen, but Iād like to explain anyway, if you donāt mind, because I think Jay going evil makes perfect sense from a narrative standpoint.
First of all, itās not just those two lines said by Kai. Those are the most blunt examples, but thatās definitely not the only time Jayās been treated poorly by the team. Sure, itās played off as comic relief, but if you pay attention it really does seem to upset him at times. Skybound is probably the best example of this, but it happens in pretty much every season. Jay is almost never given the respect he deserves. But that is not the reason he would turn evil. It definitely would add to the conflict, but it would not be his main motivation.
A lot of the reason Iām pushing this theory so hard is because of his birth mom. All of the ninjaās parents have gotten backstories at this point except for Jay. From the context we have right now, it seems like Libber abandoned her baby in a junkyard and then just disappeared. We have no idea where she is or what happened to her. Maybe she had a good reason for doing what she did, but then again...maybe she didnāt. If she, like I suspect, has something to do with the Keepers, then I have a feeling it might be the latter. And I also feel like finding out his birth mom abandoned him for no good reason and is now evil would affect Jay quite a bit.
In Jayās case, Iām not suggesting heās going to all of the sudden go all psycho or anything. I think heād want to do the right thing, but be confused about what that is. He would be very conflicted, and probably be being manipulated by his mother or the Keepers or both.
And thatās where the Nya thing comes ināthe next season is going to be hers, and just going off of what the writers have done in the past, her arc is probably going to have something to do with Jay, whether he goes evil or not. But if he did go evil, it would be every bit as interesting for Nyaās arc as it would for his.
Plot thrives off of conflict. Of course thereās going to be conflict any way this goes, but if Jay went evil, seeing the way that the other ninja, particularly Nya, handle the situation would be so interesting. All of them would be very conflicted. I think this is one of the reasons Possession is so many peoples favorite season. It wasnāt just any random villain they were fighting, it was Lloyd, and that made the situation much more complicated.
If Jay went evil, he would probably try to convince Nya to join him, which is where her arc comes in. Again, I donāt think that Jay would ever do anything he knows is wrong. If he became the villain, it would be because heās confused about what side he should be on. Itās not going to be something blatantly obvious or black or white. It would be difficult for any of them to tell what side they should be on, especially if Jay is on the opposing side, but Nya especially because sheās his girlfriend.
Is it very likely this is going to happen?
Probably not.
But would it make sense from a story perspective?
Absolutely. Itās not really about turning evil. Itās about being on opposite sides. There would be so much room for character development for all of them, and there are so many ways they could navigate the storyline from there.
So those are my thoughts. Obviously you donāt have to agree with them; I completely respect your opinion and agree that without a proper build-up, it definitely would not work very well. But if excecuted correctly, I think it would be a very, very interesting arc for not only Jay, but everyone else too.
Itās nice to hear another perspective from this, but I still have a couple of concerns regarding evil jay
Jay isnāt exactly innocent from the whole team being a bit of assholes to eachother standpoint. In s1-5 jay seemed to be the biggest offender of being a bit of a jerk. In s1 he got mad at Zane over video games, and in s5 he was just a massive jerk to Kai especially. So while Iām not Trying to say jay deserves that kind of treatment because he doesnāt. Itās more of a team problem, so itās less of a jay motive and more of an issue everyone needs to tackle. From what Iāve seen of jay even though heās a comic relief I wouldnāt really see it making much sense for jay to personally get upset about it when heās been one and the first offender of this issue.
As for libber I donāt see that being much of a reason either solely because s12 exists. While s12 doesnāt fully address the issue head on. It does set up a kind of background theme revolving around how jay found family in the ninja. Or atleast my interpretation. But jay turning evil because of libber would kind of contradict s12ās ending and his message to ugami. Now I understand that people donāt automatically learn there lessons for things. Thatās unrealistic, even for a cartoon. But I feel like jay turning evil wouldnāt be the right approach and would kind of set back his already pretty scarce arc. However a plot revolving around libber would much be appreciated, just you know if itās executed a bit differently. If you really want to go for a evil jay approach then perhaps instead of him going full out evil, heās at first manipulated by his mom into trying to do the right thing. But instead of going off the rocks immediately, heās very hesitant into doing it. Even if he thinks itās right it doesnāt feel right. And as a resolve he realizes that he doesnāt owe anything to his birth family, sometimes the people u r related to suck. Itās the people who care about you that make up your true family. Your opposing side theory kind of adds onto this. But jay is less āevilā. And personally being the filthy Kai kinnie I am I think an opposing character arc would fit more with Kai, as heās more anti hero then anyone else on the team.
And personally I think itās fine that libber is kind of a mystery and we donāt know her motives. Sure it would be nice to have extra motive to know why she did the things she did. But in life we donāt really get any perfect resolve and explanations. It would be a stronger plot point and arc for jay to realize he canāt get the perfect answer for all of his questions, maybe one day heāll know more about his mom, maybe not. But he has the family he has now, and thatās all he needs.
So while you have pretty good ideas for what a plot revolving the issue can be about. I think it would work better as itās own thing then jay being specifically evil. You have very compelling ideas I just donāt agree with the execution that much.
