Gold is all about the contrast of shine to darkness and the contrast of different hues--if you look at real pictures of gold you'll notice how dark their bases tend to be. Don't be afraid to look at references and find different golden palettes! You'll be surprised just how many different shades that gold can reflect beyond just yellow :D

Adding light to the edges of lines (as shown here) can also give depth when creating a surface with multiple depth levels, it brings some extra glow and texture to your gold!

Gold is also very reflective, a good way to simulate this I find is to take colors from surrounding areas and adding it to the gold object's edges.

This also applies vice-versa!
