This ending is often thought of as something used by older people or people in the old days, but it is actually used in dialects in the western part of Japan such as Hiroshima prefecture.
Susamaru “Now then, let’s keep playing! Until the break of dawn! Until it’s your time to go!”
命尽きるまで（いのちつきるまで/Inochi tsukiru’made）: until your life ends
The translation “until it’s your time to go” is interesting, because “go” is “行く（いく/Iku）” in Japanese but in case the kanji is “逝く(いく/Iku)”, it means “die”. The pronunciation is the same.
Tamayo (If I were to cast my Blood Arts now, it would affect Tanjiro as well. And Yushiro needs time to prepare before he can attack. But if this goes on…)
～（し）てしまう(～(shi)te-shimau): ～（something bad/sad） happens, or have happened
→ ～（し）ちゃう(～(shi)chau)… casual and broken version of ～（し）てしまう

あなた（Anata）: In this case, this is not the common second person pronoun “you,” but the special one that a wife calls her husband.

Tsukihiko(Muzan)’s wife, Rei, also called that way.

Wife of Yacchan’s big bro. “Yacchan! Dear! He’s dead! Yacchan’s not breathing!”
*I think red-colored word ‘Yacchan’ is wrong and must be replaced by ‘Dear!’. In Japanese subtitle this is ‘Anta!’ which means ‘Dear’ when a wife call her husband, and its meaning is same as ‘Anata(You)’. ‘Anta’ is casual version of ‘anata’ and has a bit rude or rough impression.
Tanjiro “Do it harder! Do it harder! Tie it up with a rope!”
もっと（Motto）: more, much, even
In Japanese, when comparing multiple things, there is no need to change the adjective or adverb, just add “もっと/more” or “最も（もっとも/Mottomo/the most）”/“一番（いちばん/Ichi-ban/the most, the best）”.
Tanjiro (Dammit! Dammit! I can’t leave this man here!)
行けない（いけない/Ike-nai）: can’t go ＝ 行くことができない（いくことができない/Iku’koto’ga deki-nai） (Formal)
行く（いく/Iku）… Base form of the verb（動詞の原形/どうしのげんけい/Do-shi’no genkei or 基本形/きほんけい/Kihon-kei）
行け(いけ/Ike)… Imperative form(命令形/めいれいけい/Meirei-kei) ＝ The final vowel of the base form, “u” in “Iku”, changes to “e”, making it “Ike(行け)”
行ける（いける/Ikeru）: can go ＝ Imperative form ＋ “る（ru）”
行けない（いけない/Ike-nai）: can’t go ＝ Imperative form ＋ “ない（nai）”
In Japanese, verbs are basically divided into 3 groups; Group 1 for the verbs end with -u, Group 2 end with -ru, and Group 3 end with -suru/-kuru. 行く belongs to Group 1.
Group 1 (verbs with -u ending… changes to -e in the imperative form.)
Tanjiro “No matter where you go, you’re not getting away! I’ll follow you to the ends of Hell, and I swear I’ll slice off your head with my blade! I’ll never forgive you no matter what!”
逃がさない（にがさない/Nigasa-nai）: I won’t let it/you escape
許さない（ゆるさない/Yurusa-nai）: I won’t forgive
Won’t V(Verb) ＝ In the base form of the verb, such as 逃がす（Nigasu） and 許す（Yurusu）, the final vowel “u” changes to “a”, and plus “ない/Nai”, making it 逃がさない(Nigasa-nai) or 許さない(Yurusa-nai).
どこへ行こうと（どこへいこうと/Doko’e iko-to）: No matter where you go

離れろ（はなれろ/Hanarero）: go/get/step away from
離れる（はなれる/Hanareru）… Base form
離れる belongs to the above mentioned Group 2 with “る/ru” ending.
In Group 2, some change to “ろ/ro” and others change to “れ/re” in the imperative form.
Yushiro “Hayaku koi. Iika. Ano kata’ni shitsurei’no nai-yo-ni shiro’yo. Ore’wa omae-tachi-nado do-nattatte iinda. Sore’o ano kata’ga do-shitemo’to iu’kara tsurete-kitanda.”
Yushiro “Get over here! Listen. Make sure you don’t offend that person in any way. Personally, I couldn’t care less what happens to you. But I brought you here because she insisted!”
あの方に失礼のないようにしろ（あのかたにしつれいのないようにしろ/Ano kata’ni shitsurei’no nai-yo-ni shiro）: Don’t be rude to that person.
しろ（Shiro）…imperative form of する（Suru）
する（Suru） also belongs to the Group 3 and changes to しろ(Shiro).

This time, there were a lot of imperative verbs, so I’ve summarized them here. In addition, for negative imperatives, add “な/Na” to the base form of the verb regardless of the group.
Tanjiro (Mr. Urokodaki did tell me… that Nezuko is a demon now. And that she’s not necessarily so weak that I have to protect her. Is it all right to let her handle this? If I have her watch over those two, I can focus on my attacks.)
One Horn “Getting hard to breathe, brat? There’s hardly any air inside this swamp. On top of that, the darkness coiling around your body must feel pretty heavy.”
ほとんど空気もない（Hotondo ku-ki’mo nai）: There is hardly any air
Tanjiro (Not to mention… there are moves that only unleash their full potential underwater!)
こそ(Koso)… strong emphasizing. In this case, “水の中(みずのなか/Mizu’no naka): underwater” is emphasized. Although the translation is “there are moves that…” in plural, Tanjiro is thinking of the technique: Water Breathing, Sixth Form, Whirlpool.
Two Horns (She doesn’t seem to have mastered any morphing skills yet, but look how strong she is anyway! She must have gotten a huge amount of blood from him!)
まだ何の異能も使えない（まだなんのいのうもつかえない/Mada nan’no ino-mo tsukae-nai）: she hasn’t mastered any morphing skills yet
まだ～ない（Mada～nai）: S haven’t/hasn’t～ done/V(past participle) yet
使えない（つかえない/Tsukae-nai）: be unable to use ＝ “使う（つかう/Tsukau）: use” ＋ “え(る)(Eru): can, be able to” ＋ “～ない(～Nai): not”
Two Horns (She moves so fast! I can’t dive back into the swamp! But they, I’m getting used to these one-note attacks of hers!)
女の動きが速すぎて、沼に潜れない（おんなのうごきがはやすぎて、ぬまにもぐれない/Onna’no ugoki’ga haya-sugite, numa’ni mogure-nai）: She moves too fast for me to dive back into the swamp./She moves so fast that I can’t dive back into the swamp.
〇〇すぎて、～ない(〇〇Sugite, ～nai): too 〇〇 to～, so 〇〇 that I/someone can’t～.
～に慣れてきた（なれてきた/Narete-kita）: be getting used to～ ＝ “慣れる（なれる/Nareru）: get used to” ＋ “～（し）てきた(～shite-kita): be ～ing/have been ～ing”
Two Horns (Did I just get taken out? Both of my other selves got taken out by this guy!)
殺られた（やられた/Yarareta）: was killed
Originally, this was not a correct reading of “殺”, and “being killed” should have been “殺される（ころされる/Koro’sareru）”. But “殺る（やる/Yaru）” and “殺られる(やられる/Yarareru)” have been frequently used in manga and anime, and now everyone can naturally read accordingly even without furigana.
Tanjiro (The smell of fear is strong. He’s trembling all the way down to his bones!)
（まるで）骨の奥まで震えるような、恐怖の匂い（だ）(Marude hone’no oku’made furueru’yo-na, kyo-fu’no nioi-da.): It’s the smell of (his) fear, as if he’s trembling all the way down to his bones.
（まるで）～ような、〇〇（だ）（Marude～yo-na, 〇〇da）: It’s 〇〇 as if～.
Tanjiro “Mr.Kazumi… No matter how many people you may lose, you have no choice but to go on living. No matter how devastating the blows may be.”
失っても、失っても、生きていくしかない（うしなっても、うしなっても、いきていくしかない/Ushinattemo, ushinattemo, ikite-iku’shika-nai）: No matter how many/much you may lose, you have no choice but to go on living.
どんなに打ちのめされようと（Donna-ni uchi’nome-sare-yo-to）: No matter how awfully you may be devastated.
Do you know the song “竈門炭治郎のうた（かまどたんじろうのうた/Kamado Tanjiro-no Uta）: The Song of Tanjiro Kamado” that plays during the scene in episode 19 which is said to be a masterpiece, where Tanjiro beheads Rui? The above phrases are used in the lyrics of the song.

Tanjiro (I was so naïve. I couldn’t even have a talk with a demon. All they did was attack me and try to kill me right away. Sorry, Nezuko. I never got to ask them… how to turn a demon back into a human.)
問答無用（もんどうむよう/Mondo-muyo）: no argument, no question asked
Haganezuka “Come on, hurry up and draw it! Nichirin Swords are also known as ‘Color Changing Swords.’ They change color depending on the bearer.”
別名（べつめい/Betsu’mei）: also known as, AKA, alias, another name

There were two things that surprised me about this episode. One is that the black-haired girl remained so calm without a single change in expression when Genya pulled the white-haired girl’s hair and got into a fight with Tanjiro. The identities of these children will be revealed much later, but they have been raised in an extremely special environment, so they probably won’t even be shaken by small things. The other one is that Haganezuka called Urokodaki without “さん(San): Mr.”. He’s clearly rude, but he’s so unique that he may not be the type to follow common courtesy.
White hair & Black hair “Everyone. We thank you for coming here tonight to the Demon Slayers Corps Final Selection.”
There are many ways of reading 白髪, such as “しらが(Shiraga): Gray hair that has lost its color due to aging, etc.” and “はくはつ(Haku’hatsu): a general term for white hair, including those who are born with white hair”. But how to read 黒髪 is only one way: “くろかみ(Kuro-kami)”, so I wrote 白髪 as しろかみ(Shiro-kami) accordingly.
The two are still young children, but they speak very politely with Keigo(敬語/けいご/Honorific words). There are three types in Japanese Keigo: 丁寧語（ていねいご/Teinei-go/Polite type）, 尊敬語（そんけいご/Sonkei-go/Respectful type）, and 謙譲語（けんじょうご/Kenjo-go/Humble type）.
～ございます（～ございます）： Keigo (humble type) of ある、いる、～だ: be
White hair “However, there is no wisteria from this point on, and so demons abound.”
おりません(Ori-masen): Keigo (humble type) of ない、いない: be not, There is not
おります（Ori-masu）: Keigo (humble type) of ある、いる: be, There is
〇〇共（～Domo）: multiple 〇〇 -If you use this word to refer to the yourself, like 「私共(わたくしども)は～(わたくしどもは/Watakushi-domo’wa, わたしどもは/Watashi-domo’wa)」, it means being humble. In this line, 鬼共（おにども/Onidomo） means she is despising the demons.

～ませ: Please～ (I don’t know exactly that is one of Keigo or not originally, but it’s used as the politest, the softest, and a little feminine way of requesting.)

This is the first appearance of the Breathing technique. The kanji “肆” was used as “四/4/four” in the past. As for the old kanji numbers 1-10, please refer to my previous post.

Teoni “Kitsune-kozo. Ima’wa Meiji nan-nen-da?”
Hand Demon “Little fox cub, what is the year of Meiji now?”
Sabito “I don’t know. No matter how hard you try, it’s never enough. You know that well yourself, don’t you?”
This is the most impressive line for me in this episode. Let’s break it down into each word and translate them.
わからない。(Wakara-nai.): I don’t know.
努力は（どりょくは/Doryoku’wa）: The effort
どれだけ（Dore-dake）: how much, how many, how 〇〇
しても(Shite’mo): even if you do ＝ したとしても(Shita-to-shite’mo)
どれだけ＋しても ＝ No matter how much/hard you do
足りない(たりない/Tari-nai): not enough
ん（N）: (emphasizing)
だ（Da）： is
よ。(Yo.): casual and soft ending
知ってる(しってる/Shitteru): know ＝ 知っている（しっている/Shitte-iru） “い/i” is often dropped when spoken casually
だろう(Daro): will, may, probably, ～, don’t you?
それは（Sore’wa）: it, that
お前（おまえ/Omae）: you
も(Mo): too, as well
努力は、どれだけしても足りないんだよ: The effort isn’t(can’t be) enough no matter how hard you do/make/try.
知ってるだろう、それはお前も: You know that too, don’t you?

In this episode, we learn that Sabito and Makomo were eaten by Hand Demon in the past, and have appeared as souls to train Tanjiro. At first, I assumed that Sabito and Makomo were training together at the same time, but it seems that this is not the case, and the two never met while alive. I wonder how sad Urokodaki would be if he found out that the mask he gave to them to ward off evil had instead attracted Hand Demon, and I think Tanjiro can’t tell him about it since he is such a caring boy…
In Demon Slayer, the old kanji numbers are used as follows;
1 (one) : 壱（いち/Ichi/current kanji “一”）
2 (two) : 弐（に/Ni/current “二”）
3 (three): 参(さん/San/current “三”)
4 (four) : 肆(よん・し/Yon, Shi/current “四”)
5 (five) : 伍(ご/Go/current “五”)
6 (six) : 陸(ろく/Roku/current “六)
7 (seven): 漆（しち・なな/Shichi, Nana/current “七”）
8 (eight): 捌（はち/Hachi/current “八”）
9 (nine) : 玖(く・きゅう/Ku, Kyu/current “九”)
10 (ten) : 拾（じゅう/Ju/current “十”）
These old kanji were used until 1949 when the current ones were announced officially. Demon Slayer is set in Taisho era (1912-1926), so the old type is used in the story.
Tanjiro (I made my descent today, sword in hand, but the sword really hampered my movement. With the sword, I can’t stop getting ensnared in all the traps!)
邪魔な（じゃまな/Jama-na）: in the way, disturbing
手ぶら（てぶら/Tebura）: Having nothing in your hands

Tanjiro (Today, I did nothing but fall. Training to break my fall and get up quickly from any position. I wield my sword, and I charge Mr. Urokodaki, really trying to kill him. In contrast, Mr. Urokodaki is bare-handed and unarmed.)
If Nezuko could speak normally, she would say “おかえりなさい(Okaeri-nasai): Welcome back.”

炭治郎「全集中(ぜんしゅうちゅう)の呼吸(こきゅう)？」
Tanjiro “Zen-shu-chu-no kokyu?”
Tanjiro “Total Concentration Breathing?”
全集中の呼吸（ぜんしゅうちゅうのこきゅう/Zen-shu-chu-no kokyu）: The word “全集中” didn’t exist originally, but now that Demon Slayer has become popular, Japanese people sometimes say “全集中で…する” when they are doing something with extreme concentration.
This line is unique. Normally, he should have asked just“君は誰？: Who are you?”, but he added “だろう？: I wonder”, so it actually means like “Who are you? ...I’m wondering.”, making it softer, typical of Tanjiro.
Tanjiro (Sono onna’no’ko’wa ‘Makomo’to itta. Ano shonen’wa ‘Sabito’ dato oshiete-kureta. Sara’ni, Makomo’wa ore’no warui tokoro’o shiteki-shite-kureta. Muda-na ugoki’o shite-iru tokoro’ya, kuse’ga tsuite-iruno’o naoshite-kureru. Naze so shite-kureru’noka, doko’kara kita-noka kiitemo oshiete-kure-nai.)
Tanjiro (This girl’s name was Makomo. She told me the boy’s name was Sabito. Makomo also pointed out my defects. She corrected my unnecessary movements and bad habits. But when I asked her why she was doing that, and where she came from, she don’t tell me anything.)
ふわふわ(Fuwa-fuwa): an onomatopoeia for “fluffy”, soft and light like cotton, or something light such as clouds and balloons floating
『言うことがふわふわしている』 is an ambiguous expressions that are left to the reader’s interpretation, and I think the translation “She speaks in such an abstract, dreamy way” is excellent.
In the scene where Tanjiro thought he’s defeated Sabito but then realized he's sliced the boulder, the animation where the perspective gradually pulled back was fantastic!
Tanjiro “Please accept this, although it’s just small change! Thank you very much!”
ありがとうございました(Arigato-gozai-mashita): Thank you very much (past tense with Keigo, humble & polite way of speaking)
In English you don’t have the past tense for “Thank you”, but In Japanese we often use the past tense when expressing gratitude for something that has already happened.

えらい！(偉い/Erai): Great! Good job!
いい子だ(いいこだ/Ii-ko-da): Good girl/boy!
凄い（すごい/Sugoi）: impressive, amazing
They are common phrases to praise children.

Demon “You won’t get me twice! All right. I’m gonna snap your neck!”
The word “neck” is “くび(Kubi)” in Japanese and its kanji is normally “首”, but here I’m writing “頚” which is used in the original manga.
Urokodaki (Ahh… This kid isn’t going to cut it. He’s too kind and can’t make decisions. He’s facing a demon, yet the scent of kindness remains. He has empathy for even a demon. Giyu… he’s never going to make it.)
Tanjiro (He’s so fast! Just how old is he anyway?! And, like earlier, I’m not hearing any footsteps at all!)
一体(いったい/Ittai): on earth, in the world
何歳（なんさい）なんだ？(Nan-sai-nan-da?): How old is (someone)?
“なん” in “なんだ” means emphasizing.

炭治郎「よろしくお願(ねが)いします」
Tanjiro “Yoroshiku onegai-shimasu.”
Tanjiro “I’m counting on you, sir.”
よろしくお願(ねが)いします: This phrase is very commonly used when you ask someone to do something for you, and it’s hard to translate into English directly. But I think that “Thank you in advance” is the closest. Even if you don’t ask anything, you can say this phrase to the person who you meet for the first time, at the end of self-introduction.
Giyu Tomioka “Forgive my abruptness, Mr. Sakonji Urokodaki. I’m sending a boy your way who wants to become a Demon Slayer swordsman. He was brazen enough to attack me unarmed. His family was slaughtered by a demon, and the surviving younger sister has become one, but I have determined that she will not attack humans. I can sense something different about these two. Like yourself, the boy seems to have a keen sense of smell. Perhaps he’ll find a way to break through and become your heir apparent. I am asking you to train him. I realize that this is a self-serving request, but please forgive me. I hope that you will take good care of yourself in your endeavors. Yours truly, Giyu Tomioka.”
This is an old-fashioned writing form of an informal letter.
略敬(りゃくけい/Ryaku-kei): one of salutations（頭語/とうご/To-go）, which is used in letters when omitting seasonal greetings/opening sentence and writing only the essentials. Currently, “前略（ぜんりゃく/Zen-ryaku）” is commonly used in the same meaning.
匆々(そうそう/So-so): one of closings(結語/けつご/Ketsugo), which is used in conjunction with the salutations. Currently, “草々(そうそう/So-so)” is commonly used in the same meaning.
何卒（なにとぞ/Nani-tozo）: Please -requesting or asking for something strongly ＝ どうぞ/どうか
Urokodaki “Which do you want for dinner? Nikujaga or oden?”
肉じゃが（にくじゃが/Niku-jaga）: a home-cooked dish of stewed meat, potatoes, and onions

This word is very useful and can be used on its own, like “大丈夫？: Are you okay?” and “大丈夫。: I’m okay.” If you want to ask it politely, you can say “大丈夫ですか？(だいじょうぶですか？/Daijo-bu-desu-ka?).

In Japanese, there are many set phrases called “四字熟語(よじじゅくご/Yoji-Jukugo)”, that consist of four kanji.
Giyu “Why did you throw yourself over your sister earlier? Was that your way of protecting her? Why didn’t you swing your hatchet? Why did you show your back to me? All those blunders led to your sister’s capture! I could have skewered her along with you!”
しまった！(Shimatta!): Damn it! Oh no! My mistake. I messed up.

The world of Demon Slayer is of course fictional, not real, and is modeled on Japan during the Taisho（大正/たいしょう） era (1912-1926). The anime adapts the original manga almost exactly, without changing its content of the story, although there are some additional parts called “anime-original”. The Japanese subtitles for the anime use simple kanji and hiragana, but on my blog I try to use the same kanji as the original manga as much as possible, even for more difficult kanji. The way each character speaks varies, from old-fashioned to modern, reflecting their individual personalities. I plan to post about each episode of this memo, focusing on Japanese language-related topics.
My posts do not contain spoilers for the contents of the new movie, Infinity Castle Chapter 1 and beyond, which has not yet been released overseas.
I’ve already seen the movie, and it was incredibly visually stunning and powerful. I saw it in an IMAX theater, so it felt more like an attraction than a movie. If it’s released in your country, I highly recommend going to see it, especially to an IMAX theater if available, because it’s really worth it!
Amane Ubuyashiki “Now that a demon who’s conquered sunlight has appeared… It’s a given that Muzan Kibutsuji will make a frenzied attempt to come after her. So that he, too, can conquer the sun.
Kagaya “At last…you’ve made your way to me. At this moment…you’re right before my eyes… Muzan…Kibutsuji. The demon that my family…the Demon Slayer Corps…has been pursuing for the last…thousand years. Amane… What kind of…shape and form…has he assumed?”
Amane “He appears to be a young man in his early-to-late twenties. However…his eyes are a light pink color… and his pupils are vertical slits like a cat’s.”
Kagaya “Is that right? Right. I knew that…you’d be coming. Without fail. Because I’m sure that… you’ve been quite livid with me…with the Ubuyashiki Family. I always expected you…to come personally for me alone…to kill me yourself.”
Muzan “Watashi wa shinsoko kyozame shitayo, Ubuyashiki. Minohodo mo wakimaezu, sen-nen-nimo watari, watashino jama bakari shitekita ichizoku no osa ga, konoyona zamade. Minikui. Nantomo minikui. Omae-kara wa sudeni shikabane no nioi ga suruzo, Ubuyashiki yo.”
Muzan “I’m feeling utterly disenchanted, Ubuyashiki. To see the head of the clan that for a thousand years… had the gall to constantly thwart me… in such a deplorable state. Hideous. So very hideous. Your body is already giving off the scent of a corpse, Ubuyashiki.”
Kagaya “I’m sure that it does. Six months ago… I was…told by my doctor that I would be dead in a few days. And yet, here I am…still alive. Even my doctor…was left…speechless. And it’s all thanks to…my single-minded desire to defeat you… Muzan.”
Kagaya “You…may not know this… but you and I…hail from the same bloodline. Although since you were likely born more than a thousand years ago… our blood is no longer thick.”
Kagaya “Our children were all born sickly and weak… and they would die soon after. My family was on the verge of being wiped out… when we received a priest’s advice. ‘A demon has emerged from your bloodline. Commit yourselves… to killing that demon. If you do so, your clan will survive.’ Through the ages, we have married the daughters of priests… and though this has made our children less prone to death, still… no one in our family…has lived past the age of 30.”
Muzan “Your drivel has now reached its peak. I’m about to gag. Has your disease spread to your brain now? Your story is completely irrelevant. And why? Because I’ve received no divine punishment whatsoever. Even though I’ve killed hundreds… thousands of humans… I have never been held accountable. Over the last thousand years, I’ve never seen the gods or Budda.
Kagaya “Kimi’wa… sono-yo-ni mono’o kangaerun-dane… Daga watashi’niwa watashi’no…kangae-kata’ga aru… Muzan… Kimi’no yume’wa nan-dai? Kono sen-nen-kan… kimi’wa ittai donna yume’o mite-iru-no-kana…”
Kagaya “So… that’s how you look at it, is it? But I have… my own… way of thinking. Muzan… What is your dream? What have you been… dreaming about… for the last thousand years?”
Muzan (What an odd feeling. Here he is, right before me, the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, always such an eyesore… yet there’s no hatred brimming in me. Actually…)
White hair kids “♪One is for one night ending… Lively… Merry… Raise decorations… Pine decorations… Pine decorations… Two is for two pine sprouts… Good color… Good color… Three layers of pine… Mount Kazusa… Mount Kazusa…”
Muzan (This odd sense of familiarity… and relief… It’s revolting. And there are only four humans in this mansion. Ubuyashiki and his wife… and two children. That’s all. No bodyguards whatsoever.)
Kagaya “Over the last thousand years… the Demon Slayer Corps has never been eradicated. So many of my poor children have perished… And yet… it still exists. The fact that it remains… proves that the human will… what you just brushed off as rubbish… is immortal.”
Kagaya “Refusing to forgive those… who have senselessly taken the lives… of their loved ones… That feeling… is eternal. No one… has forgiven you. Not once… in the last thousand years. And you know what, Muzan? Time and time again… you’ve stepped on the tiger’s tail… and incurred the wrath of the dragon… Normally… they would’ve remained asleep for all time… but you’ve awakened… that tiger and dragon. They’ve had their glare… fixed on you all this time… vowing to never let you escape.”
Kagaya “Even if you were to kill me… it wouldn’t make any difference at all to the Demon Slayer Corps. I myself… am not that important. These… human feelings and bonds… are not… things that you’d understand… Muzan. And that’s because you… you and your kind… if you die… all demons will be wiped off the face of the earth, right?”

Kagaya “Ku-ki’ga yuraida-ne… Atari-kana?”
Kagaya “I just felt a change in the air. Did I guess right?”
Kagaya “Right. That’s enough. I got to say what I’ve always wanted to say to you. Would you mind… if I said one last thing? I just told you… that I myself am not that important… but it’s not as if my death will be for nothing. I am… fortunate enough to be loved by the Demon Slayer Corps… particularly… by the Hashira. In other words… if I die… it will fuel the Demon Slayers’ motivation even more than before.”
Gyomei Himejima “Impossible. I became a Hashira at 19, and I have been saying the same thing for the last eight years. But he won’t hear of it. He’s always insisted that the Hashira… are a valuable resource that he cannot use for himself alone. I don’t know what to do.”
Muzan (The look on that man’s face! With the smile of a Buddha plastered on his face, he flew himself up in an explosion along with his wife and two children!)
Muzan (I knew that he’d set some kind of trap. But nothing of this scale! These explosives are laden with something like tiny makibishi… increasing their destructive power! In order to slow down my regeneration if even by one second!)

Muzan (Flesh seeds! Blood Demon Art! I’ve been immobilized! Whose Blood Demon Art is this? The thorns have branched out in my flesh, and I can’t free myself of them!)
Muzan “You really don’t know when to give up, Tamayo! And your misguided grudge is outrageous! Who was it that killed your husband and children? Was it me? It wasn’t, and you know it! It was none other than you yourself! You killed and devoured them!”
Tamayo “If I’d known that would happen… I never would’ve become a demon! I only said I didn’t want to die from my disease… because I wanted to see my children reach adulthood!”
Muzan “And then, you went on to kill hordes of humans! Or was I imagining things? You certainly seemed to be having the time of your life devouring those humans!”
Gyomei (When I first met him… the Master was 14… and I was 18. I had a hard time believing… that someone of his demeanor was four years younger than myself.)
Gyomei (He was the kind of person… who would always say exactly what you longed to hear at that moment. The Master’s dignified bearing… remained unchanged from the moment I first met him until his death.)
Gyomei(Along with his special voice, what he called “intuition”… was prodigious among the Ubuyashiki Clan. It’s also known as “Foresight.” The power to see into the future. Using this, they built up their fortune… and avoided crises many times over.)
Kagaya “The only thing that can destroy Muzan… is sunlight most likely. If he doesn’t die even after you’ve destroyed his head… you’ll be in… for a drawn-out battle until the sun rises.”
Gyomei (On top of that, the speed at which this body regenerates! From the sound of it, he’s on a whole different level than any demon I’ve ever faced! Even after the Master’s explosion… and our allies’ ploy to weaken him… look at how much strength he still has in reserve! I must keep this monster restrained where sunlight will hit him until dawn!)
Muzan “So, you think you’ve driven me into a corner? You’re all about to go straight to Hell! You eyesore Demon Slayers! Tonight, I’m going to massacre every one of you!”
Tanjiro “All right, here’s Taisho-era secret! I hear that Ms. Kanroji was Mr. Rengoku’s Tsuguko! His training was so grueling that everyone ran away, but I’m told that Ms. Kanroji never gave up!”
Mitsuri “A Taisho-era secret! Mr. Rengoku’s a cool big brother! While I was training with him, he taught me all kinds of things, and he treated me well! Not only that, but Mr. Rengoku is a big eater, too! We’d have sweet potato rice cooked in a pot this big, and the two of us would eat it all up!”
Tanjiro (I-It’s not over yet! If I relax for even a second, I’ll wilt and then lose ground! I gotta keep pushing this boulder for even a second longer! Not just with my arms! With my lower body! Use your lower body to push it! You have more muscles in your lower body than in your upper body!)
Zenitsu “Chuntaro? What do you want? I still haven’t gotten my boulder to move, so I can’t move on to the next training session. Would you mind not rushing me?”
Tanjiro (One cho! I-I was able to move it! That means… th-that my training… with Mr. Himejima… is over! Huh? Uh-oh… I-I’m dehydrated! Because I sweated bucketloads all of a sudden and didn’t drink any water! Z-Zenitsu… Inosuke… Mr. Murata… I’m about to die right here! S-Somebody…)
Tanjiro “No. It’s not like that. It was Nezuko who made that decision. It wasn’t me. I was indecisive… and the villagers came this close to dying. It’s not right to acknowledge me.”
Gyomei (These creatures called “children”… are pure and innocent… and weak. They’re prone to lying and have no qualms about being cruel. They’re selfishness personified. However just as I thought… this child is different.)
Tanjiro “I’m always trying to keep myself on the right path… but I don’t know what lies ahead. Someone always helps me out, so I end up not straying from my path, that’s all. That day, as well. It really was a close call. So… I’m asking you not to be so quick to acknowledge me!”
Gyomei “Yes. I happened to run into a dried fish vendor. He let me have his unsold goods for almost nothing. Let us give thanks to this kind person. And let us also give thanks to Ryotaro and Asami, who were on cooking duty today.”
Gyomei “Oh, I see. What a sweet child you are. I appreciate your concern… but as I’ve undergone strict training, hunger doesn’t bother me. Now take this and eat well.”
Gyomei “Although none of us were related by blood… we all got along well, helping each other but… living like a family. I thought that… I would go on living like that forever. However, one night…”
Gyomei “A child who’d failed to return to the temple before dark, breaking the rules… encountered a demon. In order to save himself… he told the demon that it could devour me and the eight children at the temple.”
Gyomei “Where I lived… the lore about the threat of demons still persisted… and at night, I would always burn wisteria incense. That child… extinguished the incense and destroyed the burner… then guided the demon inside the temple.”
Gyomei “Four of the children were killed instantly. I did all that I could to protect the remaining four… but three of the children… didn’t do as I told them.”
Gyomei “At the time, I had little food to eat, and I was thin and also timid. I’d never even raised my voice. On top of that, what use could a blind adult be? That was likely why those kids chose to run.”
Gyomei “It was only the youngest, Sayo, who did as she was told. Sayo alone hid behind me. I… I fought, believing I had to protect Sayo, no matter what. “
Gyomei “Iki-mono’o Naguru kan-shoku’wa, jigoku’no-yo-datta… Ano kishoku-warusa’o, watashi’wa issho wasure-nai. Had that demon not attacked me, I would’ve gone my whole life never knowing how strong I was. I continued to smash in the demon’s head until daybreak. That night, I lost scores of things. I was hurt… and I risked my life protecting Sayo… But this is what she said to shoes who arrived on the scene. ‘He’s a monster. He’s the one who killed. The one who killed everyone.’”
Gyomei “The terror of that experience must’ve left her confused. She was just a child of four. Who could blame her? That’s just the kind of creatures children are. But I… Even so, I wanted Sayo, at least, to appreciate what I’d done. I wanted her to say… ‘Thank you for fighting for me.’ Just hearing those words would’ve saved me. But it’s all children can do to think of themselves. The demon’s corpse turned to dust and vanished… and all that was left was the children’s remains. I was thrown into prison for murder. If the Master hadn’t intervened, I would’ve been executed.”
Gyomei “Afterward, it seems to me that I became truly distrustful. Needless to say, I was suspicious of you, too. No matter how virtuous people seem to be… when push comes to shove, their true nature emerges. But you… never ran off. You never turned your gaze away. You never lied. You were pure and single-minded. It may seem simple enough, but few people can remain that way whatever the situation. You are a special child. As someone who’s observed scores of people with the eyes of my soul, I cannot be wrong.”
Genya Shinazugawa “Say what you will about him, but Mr. Himejima’s a good guy. He said he wouldn’t make me his Tsuguko because I have no talent, but he let me become his apprentice when he sensed that I was eating demons. And he introduced me to Ms. Kocho to have her check my physical condition.”
Tanjiro “Well, if I couldn’t use breathing techniques, I’m sure I would’ve been in the same boat. But… how are you physically? Ms. Shinobu’s probably giving you a hard time because she’s worried about your health.”
Zenitsu “Is that right? Good for you. Give it your all. As for me… what I’m supposed to do… what I have to do, no matter what… It’s become blear to me, that’s all.”
Tanjiro “Huh? What? No, I’m serious! You love red bean mochi, right, Mr. Shinazugawa? When you were training me at your place… I could always get a whiff of mochi rice and red bean paste.”
