âIn 1984, when Ruth Coker Burks was 25 and a young mother living in Arkansas, she would often visit a hospital to care for a friend with cancer.
During one visit, Ruth noticed the nurses would draw straws, afraid to go into one room, its door sealed by a big red bag. She asked why and the nurses told her the patient had AIDS.
On a repeat visit, and seeing the big red bag on the door, Ruth decided to disregard the warnings and sneaked into the room.
In the bed was a skeletal young man, who told Ruth he wanted to see his mother before he died. She left the room and told the nurses, who said, âHoney, his motherâs not coming. Heâs been here six weeks. Nobodyâs coming!â
Ruth called his mother anyway, who refused to come visit her son, who she described as a âsinnerâ and already dead to her, and that she wouldnât even claim his body when he died.
âI went back in his room and when I walked in, he said, âOh, momma. I knew youâd comeâ, and then he lifted his hand. And what was I going to do? So I took his hand. I said, âIâm here, honey. Iâm hereâ, Ruth later recounted.
Ruth pulled a chair to his bedside, talked to him
and held his hand until he died 13 hours later.
After finally finding a funeral home that would his body, and paying for the cremation out of her own savings, Ruth buried his ashes on her familyâs large plot.
After this first encounter, Ruth cared for other patients. She would take them to appointments, obtain medications, apply for assistance, and even kept supplies of AIDS medications on hand, as some pharmacies would not carry them.
Ruthâs work soon became well known in the city and she received financial assistance from gay bars, âThey would twirl up a drag show on Saturday night and hereâd come the money. Thatâs how weâd buy medicine, thatâs how weâd pay rent. If it hadnât been for the drag queens, I donât know what we would have doneâ, Ruth said.
Over the next 30 years, Ruth cared for over 1,000 people and buried more than 40 on her familyâs plot most of whom were gay men whose families would not claim their ashes.
For this, Ruth has been nicknamed the âCemetery Angelâ.ââ by Ra-Ey Saley
Sheâs 60 now, sheâs still doing activist and advocacy work, and working on a memoir.
She published her book November of 2020
even all the way in dallas, gay men in the late 80s/early 90s said her name with reverence.
Add this one to the rolls of saints.

James Russell as Brahms Heelshire in The Boy (2016) 02/??
Oh god damn it. Now I need to watch this flick again.
All hell, I have a type. Iâm all in for the villains who are going to kill anyone that messes with their girl. I donât want a fictional, nice and sweet relationship with the cute grocery boy. I want a messy and weird af romp with the hot guy living in the walls.
"you can't ship that, it'll never be canon!"
look, when I was your age, we shipped characters who never even met in canon. uphill. both ways. in the snow.
#shipping is just a more sophisticated way of playing dolls and smashing their doll faces together#we're all clowns and you're no less a clown just bc your dolls are canon
I don't think it's talked about enough how good of a friend Bakugou truly is to Kirishima. He may not be able to show it in an overall sense like Kirishima can, but he shows it in moments where it matters most, moments where he can easily see Kirishima needs it.
Like in the flashback of Kirishima talking about how he feels he's falling behind everyone, he's literally sitting with two of his best friends (Kaminari and Sero) and neither of them step up to make him feel better. Sero even tells him to stop whining (I don't think he meant it in a mean way but more in a "this isn't like you" way, for the record, I don't think Sero is an absolute asshole lmao)
But then Bakugou turns to him and with just absolute conviction says "you wanna talk about keeping up?" as if it's literally the dumbest thing he's ever heard Kirishima say. It's like it didn't cross Bakugou's mind for a second that Kirishima doesn't have what it takes.
He sits there are reminds Kirishima that he's unbreakable. He sits there and tells him that just being able to keep standing it what makes him strong. He believes wholeheartedly in Kirishima. There's not an ounce of dishonesty in Bakugou's words. He knows Kirishima has what it takes. He know Kirishima can keep up with them all, because Bakugou has seen first hand Kirishima's strength. Has fought alongside it in moments against actual villains. The first real villain fight, they're together. They step up against Kurogiri together. Just the two of them. How could Bakugou ever think Kirishima was weak or not able to keep up?
He even looks angry at Kirishima putting himself down, like again, it's the dumbest thing.
Bakugou even goes as far as basically comparing him to All Might, talking about how All Might didn't go down at the end of Kamino. Bakugou knows Kirishima can keep standing just like All Might does, and if that isn't literally the most complimenting thing Bakugou could have said to him, I don't know what is. And that's what strength is in Bakugou's eyes. In Bakugou's eyes, Kirishima is a pillar of strength, just like All Might.
Another example of him being such a great friend is when they first move into the dorms. The framing of those scenes show that making Kaminari go dumb was nothing do to with the rest of his class. His eyes fell to Kirishima. He saw how sad Kirishima specifically was, and wanted to do something about it.
Now, I see people argue he only did that to give Kirishima the unnecessary money back BUT I disagree. If it was truly only about giving the money back without anyone seeing, he's not dumb, he could have easily just done that when they were in their dorms, complete privacy.
But no, because that's not what it's about. Bakugou just wanted to see Kirishima be himself again. He hated seeing Kirishima look so sad. He could have looked at Iida, or Momo, or Midoriya too, but he doesn't. His eyes are specifically on Kirishima. His entire class was sad, but in that moment all that mattered was Kirishima.
And then in the novels when Kirishima goes into Bakugou's room when they first move into the dorms and Bakugou's like "get out" but actually makes no move to remove him, and instead let's Kirishima stay and help him unpack.
Also in the novels, Bakugou tidying Kirishima's room for him, going as far as trying to fix his wallpaper where posters had pulled it down, like??? That's so cute???
Basically, Bakugou is a great friend to Kirishima and he deserves the same credit Kirishima gets for his friendship with Bakugou.
lower-income people tend to be âhoardersâ and richer people are able to do more âminimalistâ living spaces. if u donât have much, you will hold onto any little thing that comes across your way. you got a new tv, but you still keep the old tv because you know things can break. you keep extra boxes of macaroni and cheese lying around because there will be a week when you donât have money for groceries. you hold onto your stacks of books and clothes for dear life. those are your assets. physical evidence of where your moneyâs gone. itâs hard to get rid of it. the bare wall is terrifying when you donât have much.
Fuck. This makes so much sense and explains so much about me. I must have inherited this from my mum.
so Iâd normally put this in the tags but itâs kind of a lot so just reblog this from OP to skip my commentary. But I dogsit for a family who is clearly LOADED. Their house is immaculate. High, vaulted ceilings, wood flooring, two chandeliers in one room. These things are fancy, right ?? I really donât know, anything that isnât tile or 30 year old carpet seems fancy to me. It also so⌠bare. Everything is organized perfectly, they have no excess. Their decor is extravagant and yet minimal - it is carefully and precisely executed. Nothing that doesnât match the aesthetic sits in their living room. I tried to replicate some of it, but itâs just not possible. I have every book Iâve ever owned, my mom keeps papers upon papers, VHSs in a dresser, how do you just get rid of these things when you know you may not have the opportunity to buy them again? How must it feel to live in such orderly quarters where everything is replaceable?
This really locked into my brain when I was reading one of the declutter your space things and it suggested getting rid of duplicate highlighters and pens. /Pens/. It suggested that you needed one or two working pens, so if you had extra you should get rid of them. That was when I realized minimalist living was /innately/ tied to having spare money, because the idea was, of course you just went out and bought the single replacement thing whenever the first thing broke. You obv. Had the time and money to only ever hold what you needed that moment, because you could always buy more later.
thereâs a nice article titled âminimalism is just another boring product wealthy people can buyâ by Chelsea Fagan which i feel addressed lots of my problems with minimalism, you can read it [here]

On Wednesday, September 1, 2021, Texasâs new law, S.B. 8, went into effect. This law effectively bans abortion in the state AND asks private citizens to act as bounty hunters to âenforceâ the law.
Then, in the dead of the night, the Supreme Court turned its back on 50 years of precedent, rendering Roe v. Wade effectively meaningless in Texas. The Supreme Court allowed Texasâs unconstitutional six week abortion ban to go into effect. Six weeks is before many people know that theyâre pregnant.
This is an attack on human rights and Texas law sets a dangerous legal precedent and could clear a path for states to override peopleâs constitutional rights. If the courts let this bill stand we can expect to see similar bills introduced in states across the country.
Abortion is health care. Yet politicians are consistently attacking access to that care (even during a pandemic).
Tumblr, let's rally our voice and speak out against this ban.

Iâm sure everyone remembers that Bakugou and Kirishima teaming up at the sports festival was a big deal in terms of their later friendship.
ButâŚdo you remember how hilariously unimpressed Kirishima was with Bakugouâs attitude?
Because it was a thing.
Sometimes I read in fics that Kirishima THINKS BAKUGOU HAS NO FLAWS and Iâm just like
This is a guy who is very aware of Bakugouâs flaws and likes him anyway. Who deliberately goes out of his way to mitigate them and smooth Bakugouâs edges so he can function normally with the rest of the world. Itâs why they work so well together.
Someone who accepts you completely, warts and all, is a much rarer thing than someone who just follows you around thinking youâre great (as Bakugouâs previous âfriendsâ did), and I think Bakugou knows that very well.
Happy Pride!
Every pride, you must reblog this. No exceptions
I love that four different people on my feed scheduled this joyous person to reblog by 8am on June 1. I look forward to seeing this a dozen more times today.
