Expedition to #see the #rare and illusive Brookesia micra, a recently discovered species of chameleon from the #tropical #island of Madagascar. As of 14 February 2012, the species is the smallest known chameleon and among the tiniest reptiles on #earth, growing up to 29 mm in length, and are an extreme case of island dwarfism. The Brookesia micra typically dwell and forage on the ground, often within the leaf litter on the floor of rainforest and dry deciduous #forest, and climb at #night to low perches in the vegetation to#sleep. They are characterized by a typically dull brown or #green #color, and a short non-prehensile tail that is used as “fifth leg” in walking. CAPTION: Pictured is a grandmother and her granddaughter at #Qansale Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in #Dolow, #Somalia. Feb 28, 2017. The young girl's mother died during the #drought and she and her 4 siblings are now looked after by her grandmother, whilst their father takes menial jobs and then queue's on a daily basis for emergency rations of food from #humanitarian agencies. A growing number of IDP's from the #Gedo region who have been affected by the severe drought across Somalia and the Horn of #Africa are leaving their homes in the rural areas and moving to larger centre’s where they are more likely to receive assistance.
