Two accounts, one balance moved, and the things that stayed behind

I keep a second account so that the money I am experimenting with is not sitting next to the money I am not. Moving funds between the two is a small thing, and it still surprised me twice.
The first surprise was that the transfer is instant and internal. It does not leave the broker, so none of the charges that apply to sending money in or out apply here. I had been avoiding moving anything for months on the assumption that it would cost me.
The second surprise was what did not travel with the money. Margin that is tied up by an open position cannot be moved, so the amount available to transfer is not the balance shown at the top of the screen. And anything that was credited rather than deposited is treated differently again, sometimes reduced in proportion to what leaves. Reading the balance as one single number is what caused the confusion.
My rule now is to close or reduce positions before rebalancing, do the transfer, and then write down the two closing balances rather than the amount moved. The amount moved tells me nothing a week later. The two balances tell me everything.
The cost side, and which figures are actually charged, I went through here: what the account charges and what it does not.
