Why? Just because someone's attempting a real estate fraud by dressing as a ghost/monster?

The off chance it's one of the four instances where it's a real monster.

It's like a 1/300 chance if I don't count the 13 ghosts so I like my chances.

See, the trick is that "the GM exists for the players' amusement, whose job is to ruin their plans on purpose" and "the GM rules the group like a king, and the players exist to be their playthings" might seem like opposite (albeit equally maladaptive) approaches to play, but ultimately they both boil down to the GM doing all the work.

I don't like D&D's recent attempts to mainstream the idea that a sphinx is just a lion with wings. You give that lion a pretty lady's face like the perverts of Ancient Greece intended goddammit!

The thing about Lovecraft's work is that he did write about some genuinely fucked up critters, but he doesn't seem to have had a clear picture of which ones those are. "Dog that inhabits right angles" and "sapient colour" are treated as exactly as mind-bending as, like, "guy who looks like a fish" and "big penguin".
