One of the things that makes Soukoku interesting to me is that for all their perfect teamwork and soulmate-isms they're still fundamentally the opposite of what each other needs.
It's almost impressive that they can mean so much to each other and still not be friends. You would think that if you grew up with someone and trusted them with you life and could basically read their mind, they would fall into that category somewhere along the line. But because of their specific hang-ups they simply can't fulfill that role for each other. They need their respective friend groups to give them the love they're incapable of giving each other.
Dazai cares about Chuuya but there's still a metric ton of plausible deniability in anything he does for him that could be interpreted that way. When Chuuya is within earshot all he does is go on about "You're my dog/I let you get tortured on purpose/I wanna mind control you to be my maid/I let corruption go on too long because it was fun to watch/etc". That's the opposite of what Chuuya needs. He needs to hear the words "We did this because you're our friend. We protected you because we love you and we don't regret it." He needs there to be no room for doubt before he can really accept it.
Conversely can you even imagine Chuuya giving Dazai advice on how to improve his mental health? All Chuuya does is endure. If Dark Era Dazai asked Chuuya what he should do with his life Chuuya would either tell him to suck it up or to stop asking stupid questions. Again Chuuya cares about Dazai but not in a way that would actually help him.
They can trust each other with their lives but not their character development. Which is an interesting contrast to shin soukoku, who are presented as the key to each other's development.
I think this actually makes the ship healthier because a lot of Bungo Stray Dogs revolves around the importance of community and the places you allow yourself to be a part of in the process of healing oneself.
Dazai and Chuuya kickstarted each other's healing trajectory but there was just so much they could do for each other with their respective shortcomings and because of that their intimacy stagnated at 16.
They knew everything about each other, could predict each other as if they were a single brain, but they didn't know how to go beyond mechanical connection.
Oda and Ango showed Dazai the blueprint of what an actual friendship felt like. Dazai learned to trust that Oda knew him enough to know what was better to him in his last wish. Through the ADA Dazai learned he wasn't all bad and that he was capable of helping and doing good to other. Through his mentorship of Atsushi he learned to take responsibility for both his past and present and finally started (veeery slowly) treating Akutagawa and Chuuya better.
And Chuuya had his own journey with the Flags, with the countless allies he had within the mafia and insisted on getting attached every single time, with his relationship with the other members, taking the lead when Mori got sick, getting closer to him and Koyou. And now he has the concept of real trust and transparency to actually know what his partnership with Dazai lacked back then.
Dazai and Chuuya aren't each other's saviour nor a prize for each other's healing and I think this is what makes their dynamic even more interesting to watch. The stakes everytime they meet again are always "are these two already healed enough to actually bond?"
Even tho it is a seinen I don't see Asagiri canonizing them but I firmly believe the end of their character development will include these two finally owning up to an actual friendship.
In the latest arc Dazai almost admitted to himself he does care about Chuuya and recognizes all of the times they had the opportunity to bond in the last 7 years. And the trust was always there but these mfs still treat it as if it is a curse.

Asked my dad to take photos during his seminar for my photography class (the view best the school is kinda boring and I wanted ✨ variety✨) and I feel like we just unlocked good hidden talent of landscape photography
Anyways I showed the photo to my groupmates and they praised him a lot, safe to say I sent them an annoying amount of photos that doesn't even fit the activity requirement. This must be how parents feel when bragging about their kids, how very satisfying.
Side note: nothing beats appreciating nature when you need a photo matching an annoyingly specific technique
I have a NEED for more fics that depict Dazai as being someone that’s inherently slightly unsettling.
Not scary or threatening or intimidating but just…off. It’s an aspect of his character that doesn’t seem to appear in a lot of fanon. He’s just so WEIRD in canon.
No matter how charismatic/charming/endearing/amusing/enthusiastic he presents himself as being, there is always SOMETHING in his eye — some small, unnameable thing — that triggers a sense of discomfort in the other person. It’s seen time and time again within canon.
He just can’t help it. Whatever it is, it’s always lingering within Dazai internally and can be seen in his gaze.
It’s so so interesting and I’m so sad I never see anybody else talking about it.
Welcome to another game of "What's the reason for that pain?," today's choices include:
- fever
- period
- hunger
- sleep deprivation
- indigestion
- heat
- the general stress of life
in light of recent events…
sskk gang in atla au!!

Summoning bloody Mary at 3am [GONE WRONG] !!MY BOSS WAS SUMMONED INSTEAD!! (⚠️TW: Emotional)
/j
We're freeeee
arospec souheki where they're both each other's first love and don't know what to do about it so they're just bullshitting their way through a relationship they fully believe the other has more knowledge about
Throwback to that time where we received an email from a company we wanted to intern with but the person's name was not gendered so we searched for their account in social media and then we found them on linkedin. They were a guy. Except my friend's gaydar was going off so we wondered if we should put Ms. on the response email. We entertained putting Mx. too but the person might not vibe with that. So anyway, we ended up using Mr.
.... Anyways, on the next email we got from that person we were both addressed as Mr. (we're both GIRLS with very gendered names)
